“Samsung is in talks with Apple about supplying OLED displays for a 16-inch MacBook Pro and future iPad Pro models, according to Korean site The Elec, which does not have a proven track record in terms of Apple rumors,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.
“Little else is known about the rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro or new iPad Pro models at this time,” Rossignol reports. “Apple surprised us earlier this week with new 2019 MacBook Pro models, but the only changes are faster processors and a ‘new material’ added to the keyboard for improved reliability — hopefully, at least.”
Rossignol reports, “Given this week’s MacBook Pro refresh, it is reasonable to assume that Apple will not release the rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro until at least the fall.”

Always thought the OLED should be excellent for devices with larger screens. So is Face ID. Do not understand why Apple did not equip their laptops with Face ID either. The most useful application (as long as they would not overprice them).

Cost is one reason why OLED hasn’t appeared in many laptops but the other more serious issue is screen burn in. Apple developed several very subtle workarounds with iOS to reduce screen burn in. It could be a lot harder on macOS where you potentially have much longer periods with the screen on and many more static UI elements that could burn in.
With all of these issues I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple skips OLED and waits till Micro-LED becomes viable.
In regards to FaceID the first issue is space, Apple would have to significantly reduce the existing FaceID package to fit within the currently very thin lid. Secondly FaceID would need to work from a greater distance away, requiring more powerful sensors which sort of compounds the space issue.
They could obviously make the lid thicker or spilt the packaging and embed the 3D sensors somehow in the body of the laptop and keep the cameras in the lid.
There’s many hurdles to getting OLEDs and FaceID into MacBooks but do I agree they seem like they would be great technologies to have in them.
I hope when Apple introduces this new MacBook Pro they actually sort out the whole product family. It’s very confusing and has many gaps, I mean what on earth is happening with the 12″ MacBook and the MacBook Pro without Touch Bar?
