There’s a growing ‘Boycott Apple’ movement In China due to trade skirmish

“People in China are calling for a boycott of Apple products after tensions between China and the US reached new heights following fresh restrictions targeting Chinese telecoms giant Huawei,” Rosalind Adams and Katy Wong report for BuzzFeed. “On Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, users reacted to US pressure on Huawei by rejecting Apple products.”

“Despite ongoing US pressure on the Chinese telecoms giant — including indictments that accuse the company of stealing trade secrets and allegations that its phones provide a back door to the Chinese government for spying — Huawei is not losing support in China,” Adams and Wong report. “‘I feel guilty watching the trade war. Once I have money I will change my smartphone,’ said another user who had typed out the message from an iPhone.”

“Some Weibo users went farther and called for a rejection of other US technologies, too. ‘Trump doesn’t allow companies to use Huawei, then let’s not use Apple. We shouldn’t buy any phone that uses Qualcomm as well,’ the user wrote, referring to the US chip maker based in San Diego,” Adams and Wong report. “Negotiations to resolve the trade war are currently at a standstill. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Wednesday he would travel to Beijing soon for more talks. ‘When the time is right we will make a deal with China. My respect and friendship with President Xi is unlimited but, as I have told him many times before, this must be a great deal for the United States or it just doesn’t make any sense,’ President Trump tweeted earlier this week.”

  1. Apple to China… President Xi, does the phrase ‘bite the hand that feeds you’ mean anything? You are on notice that Apple is moving our manufacturing operations out of China, firing ALL those employees and moving elsewhere.

China’s economy needs US and US companies more then US needs China.

        1. Consumers that purchase products from Walmart and support the restocking of those products thus enabling Walmart to do what it does are also to blame.

  2. “Show us some concrete data that directly supports your reporting”

Most adults would just use the google before engaging in childish rants. Per one of your competitors:

“Apple’s iPhone sales in China were down 30 percent during the first quarter of 2019, according to new shipment estimates shared today by Canalys.

Apple shipped an estimated 6.5 million iPhones during the quarter, marking its worst decline in two years. It shipped fewer smartphones in the country than Chinese vendors Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Huawei, coming in as the number five brand in China. ”

Plenty of facts in there supporting the Buzzfeed article.

    1. That data does not say that BOYCOTTS caused the slowdown.

What actually caused the China slowdown were PRICES and lengthening replacement cycle.

Once Apple reduced PRICES in China, sales picked up. That is more correlation than you’ve shown (because you’ve shown none).

      MDN’s point stands.

      1. Yes, I’ve read it. Are you aware that Twitter has been blocked in China since 2009? There are several competing microblogging services, some with over 100 million accounts. The oldest was launched just months after Twitter, tailored to Chinese users who can cram a lot more meaning into 160 ideograms than we can into 160 characters.

  3. it’s my guess the government of china spends a lot of resources manipulating its own people with who-knows-what. fake news stories, pseudo-grassroots campaigning on social networks, nationalistic goosing, rice noodles and lot of fear. lordy lord forbid there be civil unrest

  4. Someone tell the Apple boycotters that Huawei, Xiaomi etc phones use Android made by USA Google.

Huawei PCs are filled with USA tech like Intel chips and Windows software.

    1. Tell them also,

the Huawei CFO, daughter of billionaire founder, who was arrested in Canada had an iPhone 7, a Macbook and an iPad on her. She had a Huawei phone as well but NO Huawei MediaPad tablet etc . (The iPhone because it was a well used older phone was obviously not a ‘study display model’ but a personal device and she requested it plus the Macbook , iPad back when she went on bail to ‘do work’. Canadian authorities copied the drives and sealed the copies for court and returned them).

  5. Idiot Trump has no answer for 1.4 billion Chinese unanimously chanting CHINA FIRST.

If Trump understood economics and trade, he would make it expensive for traitor corporations to export jobs. Instead he rewarded them and is taxing consumers up the wazoo.
