“A rumor from iPhonesoft.fr out today suggests that iOS 13 will cut off several generations of iPhone,” Benjamin Mayo reports for 9to5Mac. “With iOS 12, Apple supported every device that could run iOS 11, boosting performance across all models all the way back to iPhone 5s.”
“The report claims that iOS 13 will drop support for iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus,” Mayo reports.
“If this report is correct, there will be a substantial pile of devices that can no longer update to the newest iOS version come September,” Mayo reports. “It would also mean that the iPhone 5s got one extra year of iOS updates than the iPhone 6 generation. iPhone SE users would really be drawing the short straw, as the product is only three years old. It is possible that Apple wants to stop supporting 4-inch iPhone screen sizes with iOS 13…”

My iPhone 6 Plus and my wife’s iPhone 6 are working perfectly fine, so I’m sure as hell not going to throw them out just because Apple wants to sell more units. If they drop support does that mean I can’t load songs via Apple Music? Well if so they can shove that where the sun don’t shine. I’m getting a bit sick of this throwaway society, and MDN’s take is just a bunch of conceited bullshit.
You are not required to buy a new phone. Your phone will continue to work as it does now. You just won’t get new features. My original iPad is stuck at IOS 5 but still does email, messages, plays my music, video, web surfing, and apps like it always did.
May sound harsh, but I would choose the word BETRAYAL. MDN does not have our backs on this one and I’m disappointed.
Just in the last month or two MDN ran several articles regarding Apple discount sales of the SE and if I remember correctly, advised us to get them while they last.
Regardless, my direct action of the last SE MDN sale post, I picked up the phone immediately and ordered the SE Gold 128GB and picked it up that weekend at the Apple Store in downtown Philadelphia about a month ago.

Although I can understand discontinuing support for the 5s (debut September 2013), the SE debuted March 31, 2016. To drop support for a three year old phone after an Apple sale a month ago is unconscionable and unbelievable!

iPhone SE users would really be growing a short straw as they just discontinued them late last year and have been selling them until recently, I would smell a class action law suite.
My iPhone SE 2017 is less than two years old. Not being able to run iOS 13 would not push me to upgrade. Making a new iPhone that fits in my pocket and has a headphone jack would push me to upgrade.
My SE is perfect for me. How is that maddening to people with other iPhones? It seems these MacDailyNews takes get stupider on days when the share price is down. Keep pumping that stock MDN. That’s what you are here for.

As an owner of an iPhone 6, there was a time when this would have bothered me but now, my first thought is: “What will I really be missing out on?” Singing turd emojis? A Siri feature that’s nowhere near useful? Gosh, maybe even new ringtones!?
Perhaps I should consider upgrading to a new phone to get my hands on these glittering jewels, but uh-oh – that comes with a stupid looking notch, a bulging camera lens (which we all know should be sacrificed in favour of a thicker phone with a better battery) and an operating system that slows the new phone with every rushed upgrade.
As a longtime Apple fan of over 25 years, I’ve never felt less inspired as I am now by the overpriced mediocrity coming out from an increasingly ordinary company that used to be a technological powerhouse.
Somewhere in the multiverse (if you believe in that sort of malarkey) there’s an Apple still run by a Jobs who never took ill and departed tragically early.

iPhone 6s here, so would still have iOS13 support, but agreed 100%. My girlfriend has an XS so I know exactly what I’m missing out, and other than a much better camera and battery life… there’s nothing it offers that I’ll use or notice on a day-to-day basis. Plus I like my TouchID.
And the XR doesn’t appeal because it’s too big.
No MDN it would be extremely lame and piss off a lot of customers. Apple still sells the SE on clearance when they seemingly find enough parts to build new batches, or whatever is going on. To cut it off so soon after would be a shot to the gut of these customers.
Also MDN get a grip the home button is proven to be faster for unlocking. Many people prefer it.
I sure hope MDN reads your comment. I fully agree with you. I have the iPhoneX and miss the home button. I always had the phone unlocked before it even came out of my pocket. With the X it just takes longer to unlock.
Okay so the ‘rumor’ here is that the SE will FINALLY get updated in the fall and get all the new SW updates.
Sigh. Fine. I guess it took them that long to fit FaceID in a smaller form factor etc.

Remember when Macs were widely praised for their longevity? Even through several software updates, old Macs just kept on working, saving their owners untold dollars. Windows machines, on the other hand, carried the forced obsolescence of the Microsoft Tax.
Sad to see Apple adopt the same approach to the iPhone. My iPhone 6 still works, still has a good battery because I replaced it, and doesn’t have a scratch on it. There’s no reason why it couldn’t work with at least most functions of iOS 13.
I don’t have a thousand bucks laying around just looking for something to buy.

Hold on! I just bought a new SE from Apple last summer. It’s too early to be stopping the upgrades on it.
I’m using a 6s Plus and when Apple pulls the plug on support I’ll just keep using it because it will still serve it’s purpose which is primarily used for calls, texting and storing photos and music from my iTunes collection from my Mac.
As far as I’m concerned Apple and MDN can shove their consumerist inclinations up their respective arses where they can contemplate the universe.
As for my 2015 iMac, when the hard drive goes (and in the newer models they don’t have the longevity of their predecessors) I’ll put in a SSD drive and just get on with my life where things “just work”.
