Apple’s next-gen iPhones to feature new back glass design, redesigned mute switch, and more

“Twitter leaker OnLeaks has partnered with CashKaro to offer additional details regarding the 2019 iPhones, including new renders and information about a refreshed back glass design,” Chance Miller reports for 9to5Mac.

“According to the report, the 5.8-inch ‘iPhone XI’ will measure in at 143.9 x 71.4 x 7.8mm, which is slightly different from the iPhone XS at 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm,” Miller reports. “Furthermore, the thickness of the notch and bezel is said to have been slightly reduced – though the changes will be ‘almost indistinguishable’ compared to the iPhone XS.”

“Perhaps most interestingly, the report says that the 2019 iPhones will use a “new and unique” back glass design,” Miller reports. “Details here are unclear, but the report says the rear panel will be made of a single piece of glass, including the new triple-lens camera bump.”

MacDailyNews Take: We bet that camera bump won’t be so transparent as to show the asymmetrical lens array so clearly.

Certainly, if the lens arrangement isn’t laid out symmetrically, it’d be for a reason, as Apple seems to like symmetry when possible. Likely, in real life, it’ll look more like a black square camera bump than a seemingly haphazard arrangement of lenses, flash, and mic. — MacDailyNews, March 29, 2019

  1. This site has become unreadable on my iPhone and iPad. Why have you gone out of your way to destroy what worked? I have the latest iOS on my iPhone and the latest (possible) update and my iPad and it’s crazy hard to use/see. Why?

I saw other people complaining about this complaining about this and getting grief from that absolute moron something like “I have a tiny little cock, dilger, artist” something like that. Why defend MDN is their site no longer works? I too use ad blockers so you viewing may differ. Please don’t bring politics into this little dick man it has nothing to do with Britain (democracy) leaving the bloc.

      1. Stop downvoting me just because I have a tiny little qoqq! You’re making me feel inadequate. May I remind you that it’s not the size of your brush or canvas, but what you paint on it that counts?

I wish you weren’t so anti-small-qoqquettes, but there you go. It seems size does matter to some, I am proud to have a tiny little qoqq.

  2. The camera arrangement looks ugly. It might look better with a round camera bump or even a slightly rectangular bump? At the moment the three lenses just don’t sit well in the square bump. Maybe the flash could be placed in the center, between all three lenses?

Unlike some, I don’t mind the camera bump and I agree with it’s positioning, it’s placed in a corner so you can easily grip the phone in Landscape and Portrait without covering the lenses. I just wish they could come up with a better looking arrangement, sort of like the heart rate sensors on the back of the AppleWatch which look really cool. If they did that to the iPhone I think a lot less people would hate the bump.

I assume the main reason for not just putting all three lenses in a row like other manufacturers is because they want depth information across two axes/planes to produce better depth mapping or AR? As MDN said they wouldn’t have done this for no reason.

    1. MDN,

Please look up the meaning of the word “symmetrical” before criticizing a design that exhibits perfect bilateral symmetry as “asymmetrical.” Look up “haphazard” and any textbook on plane geometry before criticizing an equilateral triangle of lenses flanked by an equidistant flash and microphone as “haphazard.” You may think the design is ugly, and you are entitled to your opinion. You are not entitled to change the recognized meaning of descriptive words.

      1. Absolutely agree, it’s not a haphazard arrangement, all of the elements are precisely placed in an understandable and logical manner but that doesn’t automatically make it well designed or pleasing to the eye.

This is a very common mistake I made when I first started out as a designer, I would come up with some sort of structured layout and precisely align elements but my designs wouldn’t always result in great looking designs which my clients liked and my clients didn’t care whether all the elements were equidistant or had bilateral symmetry. I feel certain elements of Google’s Material Design is a bit like this, it’s too much about the maths.

Another thing I learnt as a designer was to listen to your client or users, if a majority don’t like the design then there is obviously some part or maybe even all of it that isn’t right. In this case I think a lot of people’s reaction to this is not positive. It’s always important to not dismiss people’s reactions or opinions as they were all triggered by something in your design.

Admittedly my use of “Ugly” was a strong word and I take it back, it’s not ugly but it certainly isn’t pleasing to the eye or a balanced design. You can argue about it’s arrangement but when you take a step back and look at it the flash sticks out and the microphone hole doesn’t balance it at all because it’s almost invisible.

I’m sure I’ll get use to it and the majority of the time I won’t see it anyway. I would also rather have it than lose the extra functionality it would give me. I still can’t help feeling they could do more with the design, especially when you see the beautiful arrangement they have on the back of the AppleWatch.
