Apple launches voluntary recall of certain AC wall plug adapters and Apple World Travel Adapter Kits

Apple today announced a voluntary recall of AC wall plug adapters designed for use primarily in Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom. In very rare cases, affected Apple three-prong wall plug adapters may break and create a risk of electrical shock if touched. These wall plug adapters shipped with Mac and certain iOS devices between 2003 and 2010 and were also included in the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit. Apple is aware of six incidents worldwide.

The recall does not affect any Apple USB power adapters.

Because customer safety is a top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using affected plug adapters. Customers should visit apple.com/support/three-prong-ac-wall-plug-adapter for details about how to exchange them for new adapters.

Affected three-prong wall plug adapters are white, with no letters in the inside slot where it attaches to an Apple power adapter. New adapters are white with gray on the inside portion that attaches to the power adapter.

  1. A universal worldwide wall socket standard is long overdue.

I know, I know … Everyone has an excuse why they can’t change, but in the long run everyone would benefit from one physical plug & socket to rule them all. We have the technology. Too bad we don’t have adequate international cooperation at any level, let alone industrial willingness to forego wasteful but profitable products like white plastic adapters.

  2. How odd for Apple to ‘solve’ a problem with only 6 incidents reported when they couldn’t be bothered by the orders of magnitude higher butterfly keyboard failures.
