“Apple had just come out with the iPhone X, so its biggest rival had to snort,” Chris Matyszczyk writes for ZDNet. “It released an ad that boasted how Samsung had, allegedly, been first in just about every phone development over the previous 10 years.”
“Screens on the Galaxy Fold phones sent to reviewers appear to be more brittle than many NBA players’ egos,” Matyszczyk writes. “For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, the Korean handset maker says it’s going ahead with the launch of the Fold on April 26.”
“A Samsung spokesperson made it all seem like a minor snafu, rather than an unfolding disaster,” Matyszczyk writes. “One might understand if it was just one phone. But when several reviewers experience different issues, isn’t this a reason to pause? Isn’t it also a reason to reconsider the desperation of being first to market? I can’t help but imagine there might be one or two sniggers in the Spaceship this morning.”

Matyszczyk writes, “If you’re going to put new, exciting gadgets into the wild world — especially if they cost $2,000 — it’s as well to ensure that those who review them first don’t focus on the fact that the gadget appears to be falling apart.”

MacDailyNews Take: Samsung has to continually claim to be “first” because they’re trying to deflect from the blatant fact that they knocked off the iPhone lock, stock, and barrel. Samsung’s, and Google’s, whole smartphone business is based on mimicking iPhone and everybody older than a ten-year-old knows it.

It looks like a lot of this is negligence on the part of the reviewers.
Here in the MDN MMC ( Macdailynews Militant Mac Community ) this phone will receive nothing but hate. But out in the real world, the sense I’m getting is that people are excited by this phone. They see this, as one of my associates put it, as the first true innovation in smartphones since the iPhone.
The “Fashion” aspect is in full swing here. People want you to see that they have $2 grand to drop on a folding phone. That whole fashion thing has been a big part of the iPhone’s success. People wanted to be seen with the latest Apple device.
I don’t have any desire for one at all. In my quest for technology minimalism, I’ve decided that one of the most useless devices I own is my iPhone. It’s a great camera, but the only thing I take pictures of is computer rooms and equipment labels. Heh.
So the way I see it, I can just give people my SKYPE number and be done with it.
Excited if they receive a phone that does’t blow up or have screen failures.
This I must agree with. Apple has been stealing candy from morons, but then, Apple can’t do everything.

Yeah, lets blame all the reviewers that broke this device in less than 48 hours.. If people are excited about this, they like Apple owners have money to burn, hope they hang onto the receipt for returning it every few days to get a replacement.
A lot of pride and effort went into developing, releasing, and promoting that errorful bend which seems to be an innovation, but Samsung did not copy it from Apple; It must have copied it from some other OEM.

I’m not a material scientist, but I can’t see how any material will ever have long term durability with constant bending and flexing.
I’ve been thinking the same thing for some time now, critic2. Even if these screens were made of chromium or carbon steel, metal fatigue would eventually claim them. No commonly available material of a silicon/glass nature can survive constant flexing of 90-180 degrees over time. None. And just wait until “regular” users get ahold of this device, not sophisticated, direction-following reviewers. Let slip the dogs of disaster!
You mistakenly assume electronic manufacturers want their devices to last. They do not. Apple is just as guilty of late pushing crippled planned obsolescence designs. Then they try to sell an expensive warranty/service package.
One shouldn’t gloat too much over another company’s goofs. The tables could be turned tomorrow.
I wrote before that it was mind boggling that they would release it knowing there are issues! …..And that it is even more mind boggling if they did not know there are issues.
Now they raise the boggle bar to newer heights by deciding to go ahead with the release on the 26th despite all this commotion and embarrassment??!!

I’m still seeing people DEFEND Samsung here. If this were Apple, people would be whining “$100000000 hardware shouldn’t be this easy to break,” but in the case of Samsung, they’re just defending it.
