“A year ago, Apple acquired the digital newsstand app Texture to form the basis of its new subscription-based service, Apple News+, which launched on Monday,” Sarah Perez reports for TechCrunch.
“As some have expected, the standalone Texture app will soon shut down as a result,” Perez reports. “Texture’s last day of service will be May 28, 2019.”
“Android users and other subscribers without any Apple devices will now no longer have a way to access Texture, they’ve realized,” Perez reports. “That means they’ll lose access to the service entirely when it closes down in May (unless they buy a Mac or iOS device.)”

So… they will continue to permit Android users and maintain that version if the owner owns an iOS device?
Doushay!
I hope anti-trust authorities are watching. Apple’s reach and control extending to Android customers.

If Texture service is shutting down May 28th, doesn’t that also mean even if you have an Apple device the Texture service will no longer be accessible? Also for current Texture subscribers on Apple devices, will the remainder of the subscription (assuming it’s not only monthly) will be fulfilled on Apple News+?
That was actually me interpreting… “will allow Android users to continue to use it if they also have an Apple device”. Paraphrasing…
On the contrary, Apple is using an excellent technique, now that it is stepping up its services business.
I see Apple acquiring more service companies that are successful in the Android world, to then offer a superior service on Apple devices, while providing an acceptable migration path for switchers.
If they didn’t require ownership of an Apple device to use Android versions, you might have a point. Maybe.
It’s exacerbated by taking away an existing service from one camp to support another.
No need to assume Android users that had Texture don’t also own Apple devices nor that losing the subscription would mean a user wouldn’t find another service or purchasing a new iOS device over simply giving up.
It’s the precedent…
How about the precedent that Ford dealerships won’t sell you a new Chevrolet? Companies have absolutely no duty to help their competitors retain customers.
I expected better of you Councilor. It’s more like…
You own a Chevy, Ford buys Chevy, and will only sell you Chevy parts if you also buy a Ford.
Let me fix that since we can’t edit…
You own Chevy, Ford buys major auto parts store but will only sell you Chevy parts if you also buy or have a Ford.
I don’t see a problem with that. Ford has no duty to make it easier to own a Chevy. Apple has no duty to make Android ownership more pleasant. They call it competition.
At the detriment of the user…
The user isn’t competing with anybody.
Looked into this further, including other articles.
The post here seems to imply that the Android version would remain, but access on Android devices would be limited to those who also have an Apple device.
That doesn’t seem to be the case. Android access will stop entirely.
So… while still at the detriment of the existing user, likely not anti-competitive. Still douchey and self serving at the expense of the existing customer. Ever insular Apple. Not playing nicely with others.
This stinks! You can not force me to buy an Apple device. I hope I get a refund for my Texture account?
I am royally pissed.
