It looks like Apple will kill off the venerable iPod touch and 4-inch iPhone SE

“Apple’s week of new products has been a lot of fun. First we got iPads, then an iMac, then AirPods,” Sascha Segan writes for CNET. “On Twitter, though, I’m seeing people longing for the most beloved Apple gadgets the company is unlikely to improve: the iPod touch and iPhone SE.”

“Both products hit a bunch of sweet spots not found in other Apple devices. The iPod touch is an entry-level iOS device for kids, which also appeals to ‘disconnectors’ who don’t want to pay for smartphone service plans. The iPhone SE is a petite, portable way to enjoy iOS and communication without getting too sucked in, and it fits into tight pants,” Segan writes. “But these devices get people into iOS with a low entry price, and that’s a big problem for Apple.”

“Here’s some sneaky math for you. Apple can raise average selling prices two ways: by selling more expensive devices or by canceling less expensive ones,” Segan writes. “And Apple isn’t casting away the market of people who don’t have $400. Apple has an answer for these folks, a sneaky one that doesn’t affect ASPs: used iPhones.”

Death is very likely the single best invention of life. It’s life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. — Steve Jobs

  1. Again, we see the crazy notion that the market for an SE 2 is cheapskates. Some of us just want a hand- and pants pocket-sized iOS device, and are willing to pay for it. Used 4-inch phones don’t address that market because they are increasingly obsolescent and in danger of becoming obsolete in another iOS update or two.

  2. Bought a “brand new” 64GB iPhone SE off eBay for $200, turns out probably both the screen and battery had been replaced and it was constantly rebooting itself, despite being perfectly wrapped in its box. I returned it and ended up grabbing the 128 GB space gray SE for 300 bucks off Apple’s clearance site.

I had been using a loaner iPhone 6s for about five months! I have never been so happy in my technological life as when I restored my phone to the this brand new SE that I’ve been using blissfully now for two months.

I’m not expecting macdailynews to understand, or even for Tim Cook to understand. But Steve Jobs would have understood and the news stories today would all be talking about why Steve, in picture after picture, is seen still using the SE, despite the powerful, beautiful, big X models. If he was still with us in form.

If there was ever a company in the world in a position to sacrifice a tiny bit of their bottom line to make a a good size chunk of their customer base happy, Apple with their 100s of billions is it.

Please Tim, Jony, Phil, please Apple and the ghost of Steve Jobs, please help those of us who think differently about the iPhone SE and iPod Touch.

    1. There’s no proof the iPod Touch is going to be killed off. Actually, it could be quite useful for Apple to keep it as a low-cost device to be used in conjunction with their AR glasses. I don’t really know anything but I’ve seen some sites saying Apple will be updating the iPod Touch. Unless Apple is simply trying to cut down on SKUs, it’s probably useful to keep around at least as a basic music player.

I’m unable to make any sense out of Apple’s goals and a lot of things they do with their products seem quite haphazard to me.

  3. Apple has simply stopped aiming to change the world, delight people, etc. with Steve’s death. They’re now a run-of-the-mill for-profit-at-the-expense-of-consumers kind of company.
