What to expect at Apple’s ‘It’s Show Time’ special event on March 25th

“Continuing Apple’s penchant for cryptic invitations, the one for the March 25 event is headed ‘It’s show time.’ The invitation isn’t a static image, though, nor is it quite like last October’s event where hundreds of different images were then made into an animation. This time Apple ran an old-style film countdown before unveiling a regular white Apple logo on a black background,” William Gallagher writes for AppleInsider. “Given the word ‘show’ and the film-style intro, it does look as if this event will be all about Apple’s forthcoming video service.”

“Apple is known to have spent over $1 billion on original shows for this streaming video service and undoubtedly it will want to launch it to maximum effect. And there’s a problem here because some reports say that the service won’t launch for another several months,” Gallagher writes. “If the event does launch the video service, that service will be coming sooner than these reports expect.”

“Apple does not hold events every March. Since 2011, it ran five events but had no announcements in 2013, 2014 or 2017. Each time it has had an event, though, it has always unveiled new hardware. Only once, in 2015, did a March event fail to include a new iPad,” Gallagher writes. “Apple now has a history of doing certain hardware updates with just a press release…”

  1. Apple will offer rental video. They will call it iBlockbuster and it will have a couple exclusive Apple produced sitcoms in glorious 720p resolution. Price will be $14.99 per month and it will be exclusive to Apple TV consoles which eill now come in Rose Gold for only $50 more. Then Cook will brag how no other company has the courage to do this. He will not utter the word Mac, iPods, or other MIA products.

After the presentation, when asked about promised hardware like charging mats and new Mac Pros, Cook will be overheard expressing his love of the Apple team that works incredibly hard and has a pipeline full of really cool stuff that he knows will be very interesting. He will say that he’s never been so impressed at any pipeline before this one. Apple has so thoroughly polished the turds in it, people will need sunglasses before stepping into an Apple Store in 2024.

  2. Video service. Rats.

Given the intro, I was hoping maybe Apple was going to get serious about video production again. Remember Final Cut? If you are making original movie content, maybe the gear that is used to make that content might be something you want to think about?

Camcorders and digital cameras have been rather badly designed for some time now, and Apple’s (former) ability to rethink and integrate function could have make a big splash. The fact that anyone would consider shooting a feature on an iPhone should hint at a product opportunity.
