“Samsung introduced its first smartphone with a flexible display on Wednesday and seemed to pitch itself years ahead of its archrival Apple,” Vincent Verweij writes for Foldable.News. “What will Cupertino’s reaction be, will they follow suit? And what would a foldable iPhone look like?”
“Foldable.News asked Dutch industrial designer Roy Gilsing just that,” Verweij writes. “Gilsing is a renowned product developer who has worked for clients such as Rabobank, Colgate-Palmolive and Fresh ‘n Rebel. He’s also one of the specialists of the ‘Stars of Science’ TV show, which is being broadcast in more than 10 countries.”
“At our request,” Verweij writes, “he designed the imaginary ‘iPhone X Fold,’ a sleek handset with two displays.”

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, it won’t “fold” like that, on a line, but bend. We also doubt that Apple would make an asymmetrical device with one straight edge (binding) when closed. Regardless, until enough flexible displays can be made to Apple’s exacting tolerances and in the vast quantities iPhone would require, cost-effectively, Jony Ives & Co. have time to do foldable devices right.

Standing strong like Supergirl… I will swallow my fear and say… I kinda like it.
This concept will never fly with Apple, fundamentally it’s just a gimmick, underwhelming and not worth it.
I don’t know if Jony can handle something like this though. I hear he’s hold up in dirty underwear and a wife beater with a bottle of scotch in his mansion in a lazyboy mumbling something about I used to be great, GREAT!

which is now why Apple should have invested in display tech at the same time they invested in designing their own SOC’s.
i would say maybe Steve Job’s view of wanting to be able to create the whole widget is holding true, although, he missed on deciding on building their own OLEDs and wasted their time on the crystal stuff.
Apple got screwed by a American company with Trump like business ideas, promise and then don’t deliver.
And it’s not to late for Apple to get back into display’s, money isn’t the problem wasting time on Hollywood is.
A foldable fake iPhone is just a flip phone which is retrograde. Stretch, not flip.
I know about stretching as I regularly stretch credulity with my artistic outbursts.
At least Samsung can ship. After all, real artists ship, and as you all already know so well, I’m full of ship!
…how about a foldable phone that folds into something small enough to easily fit in a pocket. Instead of a large phone that unfolds into a small tablet.
Motorola StarTAC with no keyboard (but with an external exchangeable battery) comes to mind, lol
…how agout going straight to TheSystem®, an amalgam of Apple technology:
a. contacts that are computer screens, (no external glassholes),
b. AirPods® which contain the phone speakers (hey, already here),
c. AppleWatch® for the internet connectivity to link it all together (here already too).
All this working in conjunction for a hands free, VR-enabled, and personally interactive system. Probably too soon for computer screens that small. Using your own body heat and motion could generate the energy to power them all.
Only on an open ecosystem.
Apple needs to work on stuff that makes sense,
like a foldable car.
