“As part of its efforts to rebuild Apple Maps, Apple has been collecting street-level data with LiDAR-equipped vehicles for over three years, with at least 45 states across the U.S. partially surveyed to date,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.
“That total is set to rise in the coming months, as Apple has confirmed it will begin surveying Alaska, South Carolina, and Tennessee between March and July, according to an update to its recently revamped Apple Maps image collection website,” Rossignol reports. “Data collection is also set to continue in seven other states over that time.”
“Apple’s surveying efforts have reached nearly every corner of the United States. Apple plans to roll out its improved Maps app across the country section by section over the next year,” Rossignol reports. “Apple Maps vehicles have also surveyed parts of Croatia, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, and they are headed to Andorra in April, according to Apple’s website.”

You have to be joking. Google did not start out with its own maps database, either. Apple has done well using commercially-sourced map data, and the company is now well along in the process of gathering its own detailed national and international map data so that it can enhance and differentiate Apple Maps from the competition.
I use Apple Maps almost exclusively. It works well for me. If you want to gripe, then how about including a bit of substance rather than just bashing Cook?
Then again, this is 2019 and we have Google maps and Waze. Tim Cook is just utterly pathetic. I have to admit it. There’s simply no getting around it, as much as I try and explain it to myself otherwise.

Yay for us (ALASKA)!! Despite the size we only have 8 major roads connecting the cities and about 700,000 population.

That’s correct, you cannot drive to Juneau, the capital. Ferry or aircraft only.
When Apple Maps first came out, they had our driveway indicated as a street. I gave input three times to have that corrected. It still isn’t. People turn into our driveway. Not only has Apple been a bit slow getting it up to speed, but it doesn’t listen to input. Hopefully, they won’t mess their mapping up.
Alaska’s a cakewalk. Sure it’s kinda big (by USA standards)… but it’s mostly uninhabited… 700k people. Oregon will be harder.
