U.S. Army asks contractors to imagine that Steve Jobs were designing America’s next-generation rifle

“The [U.S.] Army isn’t on the hunt for any old rifle for it’s Next Generation Squad Weapon program — it’s looking to spark a ‘revolution in small arms’ on par with what the iPhone did to consumer electronics,” Jared Keller reports for Task & Purpose.

“At least, that’s how Army officials at the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey described their overall goal in a conversation with Task & Purpose following the release of a formal Prototype Project Opportunity Notice calling on industry partners for a rapid prototyping and testing run of the brand-new platform. ‘Imagine that Steve Jobs and his engineers were trying to convert the iPod Touch to the first 3G iPhone,’ said Army Col. Elliott Caggins, project manager for soldier weapons. ‘There were a thousand technologies they could have put in the first iPhone but they were looking to mature the platform before they could actually go onto the system.'”

“Rather than slap future additions onto an outdated platform like the service’s current M4A1 improvement program, the Army wants future capabilities baked into the NGSW from the get-go in a ‘one end-all solution’ to replace both the M4 and the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon,” Keller reports. “One of three companies selected by the Army will ultimately end up cinching the contract to actually produce the weapon in all its glory. ‘We have hundreds of capabilities we can put into this weapons system, but we want to do it by holistically creating a system that that takes advantage of everything we’ve done in the past,’ he added. ‘This means its capabilities will only grow, just as the iPhone’s did.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Obviously, by invoking Steve Jobs and the iPhone, the U.S. Army is looking for a paradigm-shattering solution that’s capable of delivering significant disruption.

  1. They ask for industry to aspire to reimagine the rifle as if done by Steve Jobs….but what they’ll likely get is a product put out by Tim Cook. Late, overpriced, not fully operational as intended. This is the defense department we’re talking about.

(sorry Tim, but there’s a shred of truth to what your naysayers complain about even if you have other good qualities too)

    1. Perfect!

Wow. Uber liberal anti-gun Cook is afraid of a pixel picture of a REAL handgun, and then caved to the radical left. The carnage left us with a kiddie green squirt gun?

Mr. Cook, you may have heard of the second amendment to the Constitution. Why are you disrespecting and throwing law abiding gun owners under the bus?

Bottom line: A pixel picture NEVER killed anyone, get real…

      1. What drivel. If a pixel squirt gun never killed anyone, why do you care so much? There is a whole world outside the US, you know.

And who cares if they’re law-abiding. If the law stated that child sacrifice was okay, would it be okay? Just because a piece of paper some dead guys wrote says you can do something, doesn’t mean it’s right. Being American means standing up for what is RIGHT, not for insisting upon certain rights. If that means ignoring nonsensical centuries old-laws to modern sensibilities, then so be it.

Besides, the 2nd amendment says nothing about emojis.

  2. … it’s just a darn shame that Iraq isn’t still under the loving hand of Saddam Hussein. I mean look how well he treated the Shiites and Kurds, although he didn’t spare any of that gentle treatment for his own Sunni sect, including relatives and best friends.
You seem to think that your beloved Muslim brothers would all be living in peace and harmony if only that evil U.S.A. hadn’t invaded their country. Time to grow up and get a new schtick, snowflake.

    1. Well said @Oh yeah …

I read the rebuttal and always the same first sentence playing the victim whenever anyone disagrees and specious accusations of putting words in his mouth that is pure 🐂💩.

Road Wimp is LONG INCAPABLE of understanding exactly what is going on in the REAL world because his one-track blindness is ALWAYS hatred for the USA in over 90% of his posts. Now liberal hate for gun owners, hate for the U.S. military that liberated the world in WWII, how clueless can you get.

Possibly if his “home country” is invaded the Muslim murderous dictator nations he DEFENDS will come to the rescue… 😆

      1. What is sad to see is a broken record pathological obsession with weapons of mass destruction.

What is sad to see is a broken record pathological obsession with the U.S. as a terrorist nation.

What is sad to see is a person that cannot acknowledge murderous dictator regimes the world over and NEVER mentions them.

Instead, in a twist of liberal stupidity it is clear he has no problem with them. Well, you can’t invite Saddam to your place for a cup of coffee, but Hassad is still available… ☕️😆

        1. I don’t know, it looks like gw shrub will become famous for running a genocide and actually getting away with it, unlike Hitler. Of course the death toll numbers are nowhere near Hitler’s but the length of the genocide, that’s impressive roughly 3 times longer than Hitler’s so that’s gotta count for something.

But wait, there’s more, now that the new mission is to look at Iran from Iraq it could just be that genocide will become the latest hobby for those from Apple’s home nation.

Too bad there isn’t a Nobel War Prize, gw shrub would be a shoe in.

          Have a good one John.

  3. Why do I imagine an expensive non-enduser serviceable rifle when I read the title? Could be quite the problem in the field unless they also take an ‘authorized’ service personnel with the team.
