“The Los Angeles rail and bus transit system should allow iPhone-owning members of the public to use Apple Pay for fare payments before the year is out,” Tim Hardwick reports for MacRumors.
“MacRumors can confirm that LA Metro, the transit agency that manages integration of the TAP card system in the Los Angeles Area, said it is working with Apple to support mobile payments for iPhones, with rollout scheduled for this fall,” Hardwick reports. “The information was obtained in a public information request under California law.”
“Apple Pay support would enable commuters to hold a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch near a TAP card reader to pay their fare on buses and at turnstiles in subway stations throughout the TAP system,” Hardwick reports. “Los Angeles would join a handful of cities with transit systems that already support Apple Pay, including Chicago, Portland, and Salt Lake City in the United States, Beijing and Shanghai in China, and other global cities like London and Tokyo. ”

Why not parking meters?
Love Apple Pay for the CTA in Chicago! They’d screwed up with sending my replacement card before my old one expired and I was afraid I’d have to scrounge for change to get to work on the bus and train. Checked the CTA site and saw the Apple Pay logo and it works pretty slick.
I hope they do it for LA Blue Cars as well.
In Sydney, Australia, (pop. 5.5M) ApplePay is also live across the entire public transport network including trains, buses, light rail, ferries and on-demand minibuses.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t yet support mode transfer discounts and multi-day discounts but that’s understandable as it would be relatively complex to coordinate it across multiple accounts but hopefully it could be done with a unique ID for a traveller, along with associated privacy concerns.
This is going to be a great encouragement for Cook. Especially when Apple knows they need him for strategizing key business moves. Moreover, stockers don’t really care about what’s Apple thinking when they’ll have profits to embrace.
