Cherrypicking a few GDP index value provides an incomplete picture: the useful indicator is the Annual GDP, whose value is scheduled for release next week (Jan 30th).
Forgetting “Promise Made” … because it hasn’t been kept: the GDP promise was for 4%, which wasn’t met.

Misplaced Credit: if there’s extra money in taxpayer’s pockets today, it isn’t because of a “booming” economy, but because of the tax cut which has added to the National Deficit: $779 billion was added in FY18, which is $6000 increase per household (at only a 4% interest rate is a $243/household annual increase in debt service costs…forever).
Consumer confidence – – hasn’t soared. In Oct 2016, iIt was at 101 … and that ‘record high’ was 102 in March 2018 … yeah, bragging about one whole point.

The problem with Mr. Trump’s policies is that he thinks that sticking up for America requires sticking it to everybody else. This is not a game that can only have one winner. Trade is either mutually beneficial or it just does not happen.
I’m visiting family in El Paso, Texas, which has a local economy based largely on trade with Mexico. Clearly, we are getting and have been getting the better end of that deal. The average El Pasoan is much better off than the average resident of Juarez, Mexico, just across a narrow river. Still, those folks are probably better off than people living in interior Mexico. The trade benefits both communities. We should be encouraging contacts across the border, not trying to stifle it based on rumors rather than facts.
El Paso has perhaps the largest immigrant population of any large US city and one of the lowest rates of violent crime. So much for the anti-immigrant crime argument.
The vaccination rate in Mexico is comparable to the US. So much for the disease argument.
Almost all of the drugs coming into the country in this sector are coming through legal ports of entry, like a third to a half of the undocumented alien population in the entire country. So much for that argument.
As for the effectiveness of The Wall, which is already built through the city and for miles on either side, here’s what is happening: The wall is not built on the border itself, which is the middle of the river. It is not even right at the edge, because the engineers need access to maintain the concrete channel and the Border Patrol needs clear sight lines. In places, it is well away. The planned route in South Texas is out of the flood plain, so a quarter mile or more from the actual border, cutting existing farms, ranches, and park areas in half.
So, Central Americans who are seeking political or humanitarian asylum are just crossing the border, walking up to the steel slats, and surrendering to the Border Patrol agents on the other side. US law specifically allows anybody on US soil to claim asylum. They cannot be removed without due process. The agents have to let them through The Wall so they can be processed.
Perhaps there are better ways to defend our borders than that. You can buy a lot of electronic sensors and drones for $5 billion.
For a start, we might think about paying the employees in agencies like the Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Drug Enforcement Agency, FBI Counterterrorism, the Coast Guard, and the TSA, rather than expecting them to protect our lives by risking theirs for free.
Reality is a rabid bitch that keeps biting the ass of liberals.
