“Good news for fans of getting stuff fast — all of us, then — because a new version of wifi is just around the corner,” David Nield writes for Gizmodo. “Wi-Fi 6 is going to be better than current wifi in every regard, and the body behind it just published a paper extolling its virtues, emphasizing that, yes, we will still need good old wifi internet connections even after 5G arrives.”
“But isn’t 5G going to negate the need for wifi? Won’t its arrival have our home routers dolefully gathering dust in the corner?” Nield writes. “Well, not quite.”
“While the Wi-Fi Alliance does of course have a vested interest in the tech its whole existence is based around, the Future of Connectivity paper it’s put out does make some valid points about Wi-Fi 6, 5G, and how all these wireless standards are going to live together happily in 2019 and beyond,” Nield writes. “When it comes to Wi-Fi 6 vs 5G, it’s not really an either or situation — they’re both likely to end up being widely used in the years to come. As is the case now, the cellular tech will probably continue to be more frequently used in the outdoors at a large scale, while wifi will probably still be of most use indoors.”

MacDailyNews Take: We shall see how it all pans out. If 5G fulfills its promise and you can get a good 5G signal inside where and when you need it, we can see it supplanting Wi-Fi usage to some degree.
There won’t be 5G everywhere for 3 to 5 years. The TELCOs ands governments are being very slow with running this out. Auctions for allocating the bandwidth haven’t even been held yet in most countries. And you know very well that the TELCOs won’t even start the build out until after they’ve got their licence. $G isn’t everywhere yet.
Anyone who buys a 5G phone is out of their mind for a while.
Amen. WiFi6 is another marketing scheme to charge even more money for (relatively) crappy service. My money is Verizon 5G. Roll it out, roll it out, roll it out.
wifi 6 will be a way to improve wifi in homes and buildings. it has nothing to do with charging more for any service (your current wifi will still work). 5G in the other hand is what the telcos will try to to use to squeeze more money out of customers. It would be nice if local ISPs could use 5g to offer competition to compensate for the limited options many of us have for home internet.
Plenty of buildings that cell service does not penetrate well enough to give quality service and that includes some of the frequencies intended for 5G.
Near field wifi will always be faster than longer distance cellular, and wired (or fiber optic) will remain the fastest of all for the foreseeable future. You don’t need a PhD in Physics to understand that.
The marketing hype of cellular companies knows no bounds. Don’t buy into the schtik. They will take your last dime before delivering consistent fast reliable cellular wherever you are.
This question is in context of serving internet to phones?
The LAN remains relevant in the home and office space, so unless 5G LTE will be available as a Wireless LAN tech, this is a false dichotomy.
If it IS going to be offered for WLAN implementations, 5G loses badly to WiFi6 in throughput.. causing a pain point for phone/computer-to-TV/speaker/printer, etc.
