Blackmagic eGPU Pro with Radeon RX Vega 56 delayed until December

“On the same day as the new Mac mini and MacBook Air were unveiled last month, Blackmagic Design announced a new eGPU Pro destined for release in November,” Chance Miller reports for 9to5Mac. “Apple today, however, has updated its webpage for the product to indicate the release has been pushed to December.”

“The Blackmagic eGPU Pro features the powerful Radeon RX Vega 64 inside, providing a significantly faster GPU than its non-Pro predecessor,” Miller reports. “There’s also DisplayPort connectivity.”

“Our own Jeff Benjamin reviewed the original Blackmagic eGPU and noted that while it offered impressive build quality, performance wasn’t quite up to par. The new eGPU Pro should help remedy that with its improved Radeon RX Vega 56,” Miller reports. “When available, the Blackmagic eGPU Pro will cost $1,199. ”

  1. Yeah, why have everything on one convenient & neat box when you can pay through the nose to have the same thing in a bunch of modular boxes spread all over your desktop with cords running everywhere.

Now THAT’S innovation & progress!! (Or is it the same thing in just a different, albeit more expensive, form factor?)

  2. This kinda sucks…

macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later don’t support eGPUs in Windows using Boot Camp or when your Mac is in macOS Recovery or installing system updates.

  3. You wouldn’t need an overpriced underpowered eGPU if your premium priced laptop wasn’t fitted with a low to mid end GPU.

Apple has done an amazing job at persuading their users to expect low end GPU as the norm because thin is better right?

  4. Wow! Four justifiably negative comments all with 5/5 votes. Are you reading this, Timmy? Maybe you’d better do an extra hour in the gym to work off the stre… Nah, you don’t feel stress, do you? You couldn’t give a $h¡t.

  5. If there isn’t a Nvidia option then its not a “pro” gpu. I guess its good for Resolve and open CL but when so many professional solutions require CUDA support then Nvidia GPUs should be an option.

    1. Nailed it. Nvidia is THE dominate force in graphics. How can we still have no nVidia Support? Also why are these cards not upgradeable? Shouldn’t there be an easy want to plug in a new one when it comes out? Would that really be that hard?

  6. I often wonder if Hate Trolls actually use a Mac.. Actually I don’t care.

My 2016 MBP is the best laptop I’ve ever owned. While I’ve gamed more on a PC than any Mac to be sure, I’ve accomplished and created more on my Mac than any PC, ever.

I do think the marketing the eGPU with a 15″ MBP is a mistake on Apple’s part. After you spend $4K on a MBP with Vega graphics, you’re not going to get your $$ worth from the eGPU pro. But if you’re on a 13″ MBP or the 2018 Mac Mini, then you probably will.

Are these Apple products F#$ing expensive? Yes. I factor in return-on-investment = time owned x productivity x income. When my productivity in MacOS falls to Win10 levels, then on that day I will try something else. Maybe Linux on a Raspberry Pi.

    1. I often wonder if slavish Apple fans have actually worked one day as a professional creative? I do care that’s why I Switched Back to the PC after 15 years of Mac only usage.

When you spend $4k on a MBP and it performs less well than $2.2k Windows laptop running the same software instead of jumping on a forum and defending Apple the smart thing to do would be to question what your extra money has actually bought you.

As many former Mac users are finding the Windows world has come a long way and with Apple end of lining OpenGL and Open CL and killing Cineform and Avid video codec support in future OSes professionals are being driven away. Talk to me a bout productivity when the application you once relied upon is no longer developed or lags behind the Win/Linux version because Apple requires Metal support or your video facility uses certain codecs that are no longer supported. This is why I wonder if fanboiz ever do any work with their Macs or just like to talk like they do?
