ZDNet spends one month with the Apple iPhone XR: ‘The best new iPhone for most people’

“My Apple iPhone XR arrived on 26 October… and after a few days I figured I would keep it for the required 30 days and jump to the iPhone XS since I loved the iPhone X form facto,” Matthew Miller writes for ZDNet. “It turns out that the iPhone XR may be the perfect iOS device for me and I have no plans to visit T-Mobile to switch it out.”

“Given that the iPhone XR is $250 and $350 less than the iPhone XS and XS Max, respectively, there are bound to be areas where it lags behind these two devices,” Miller writes.

These areas include: Display technology and lower resolution, cellular reception, lack of 3D Touch, less dust/water resistance, and no second rear camera.

“We may not have expected to see that the iPhone XR actually beats the iPhone XS and XS Max in a few areas, but if these are important to you then you may want to choose the XR as well,” Miller writes.

These areas include: Lower price, longer battery life (due to lower resolution display), 128GB storage option, and colors.

iPhone Xr comes in six new finishes: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED.
Apple’s A12 Bionic-powered iPhone Xr comes in six new finishes: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and (PRODUCT)RED.

Miller writes, “For me personally, the enhancements outweigh the compromises and the iPhone XR is my favorite of the three new iPhones launched in late 2018.”

MacDailyNews Take: The XR is certainly an excellent iPhone. It’s not the best iPhone — Apple’s flagship XS Max clearly offers a superior experience — but the A12-powered XR is certainly more than enough iPhone for most users.

  1. I have an Xr and it is great. I love the battery as it does not go down so fast. So I will be trying to keep this one for 4 years for a change. Just change the battery in about 2 years and save money. Tired of Apple ripping us off.

    1. I imagine the next big driver for upgrades will be the shift to 5G, which will certainly not happen before 2020, and, I suspect, it will be later than that (certainly for roll-out in all the major markets).

    2. Well, RTJ, I was with you until you concluded with that “Apple ripping us off” comment. What do you expect? You know what you are getting when you purchase an iPhone. If you do not believe that it is a good value, then you are free to go elsewhere.

I just got my first brand new iPhone – everything else has been hand-me-downs and my old iPhone 5s was showing its age (but still working!). I got an iPhone 7 – awesome phone at a great price!

      1. Good for you to buy one. I guess I should make it clearer that Apple is ripping us off with apps. They told them to charge monthly instead of a one time fee. Also it’s getting more expensive. In the beginning, the prices and services were great. Now with no other better choices, We continue with Apple and put up with expensive apps and services?

        1. Also ripped off on the high price of the phone. The high end fully loaded SE that I bought on day one two years ago was $499. Certainly with improvements the XR should cost more. But 50% more for the entry level phone is simply unacceptable…
