“Mac mini hasn’t been updated in so long any spec bump would have gone a long way. With Intel’s Coffee Lake, it goes pretty much all the way,” Ritchie writes. “You can get quad or 6-core intel i5 or i7 processors, which are night and day ahead of what was there before. There’s a new thermal system to keep it all cool inside that tiny enclosure, including new vents and a new power supply. You can go up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory and up to 2 TB of super-fast flash storage.”
“Add a Mac mini to your MacBook Pro and offload Compressor work to a Mac Mini or half dozen. Sit on the beach with your MacBook Air, hit a button, and build and deploy on your Mac mini,” Ritchie writes. “Or, you know, just fill your server room with them.”

I haven’t found anyone report if the SSD is proprietary or an indication if I’ll be able to upgrade the HD myself in another year or two. It will be truly disappointing if they try to lock that down too..

The coolest thing is NOT the recycled aluminum case, Dagnabbedit. The coolest thing would be IF (that’d be IF) we can easily change RAM/SSD.

If by professionally focused you mean no user storage upgrade options and price gauging, then you need to consider another profession. Apple had so much time and the result is they threw a bunch of current components in the same old box, and priced them with gouging prices, showing they don’t care about the Mac or it’s pro/enthusiast users. So much time to produce so little. Disgusted.
Looking good Apple, this unit looks like it will take off nicely for the niche that wants mini performance.
Saying a “professionally-focused Mac mini” is no better than saying “iMac Pro” neither is an accurate representation of reality. Neither are truly pro machines.
I haven’t seen a review on a tear down yet, but from what is available so far, the SSD is not user upgradeable.
The six core i7 has been shipping in quantity from Intel since calendar Q4 2017 (about a year) … so that’s not even state of the art.
And, that last year’s chip’s internal GPU does not natively support HDMI 2.0 (Apple’s claimed HDMI version for that port). So, if Apple really does have a HDMI 2.0 port, Apple must be using addition hardware to support that.
RAM is upgradable, so saving some money , I’m ordering with min RAM, max processor and 1TB drive. Will be connecting to existing promise Pegasus2 R8. existing Mac mini only has 500GB SSD and we have never filled that up, so should be good with 1TB. Some of the money saved on RAM will have to go for a thunderbolt 2 adapter, but overall, this will do nicely. Hope it lasts as long as our mid 2011 Mac mini has.
Professional focused in price yes but starting with a high price and an i3 (defiantly not high end) processor for $300 more than the previous model is ridiculous. Apple used to keep the price on older models high even after the parts we no longer considered top end so that when the replacement was introduced they could say look you get a much faster machine at the same price. Now under Cook it’s we keep the old part at a ridiculously high price and when we replace it we increase the price by 62%.
And a crappy video card. Nice!
More proof that Apple is getting out of the Mac business.
There’s nothing professional about this new Mac mini. It’s useful for nothing. To make it useful you need to add an eGPU and then it nearly costs as much as a Windows Workstation.
I specced out a a 6-core 32GB 512GB SSD and it came to £1970, this is absolutely absurd money compared to a Threadripper based PC with at least a 1080TI/2080. No real professional is going to urinate money away on the Mac mini if they need a real computer.
If Apple wants to create more switch backers then release this sort of overpriced crap is the way to go.
Jean Louis Gassee would be proud. Totally disgusted at this point. I’ve purchased 50+ MacMinis for clients in the past. I moved away a couple of years ago. “Gouging” is the correct word for this. I’ll stick with my i7 mini from years ago to keep my personal iTunes going, but ditching all other Macs.
Hands on? What did this guy have his hands on? Certainly not a new MacMini. Unless that was him playing with a mouse that was connected to a display MacMini at the Brooklyn event for a few seconds. A minute and 45 seconds of regurgitated keynote and then the rest is an ad for a wifi device he’s presumably getting paid to shill.
“Hands on” means you are using one in your possession for enough time to run programs and test the capabilities enough to compare to other products.

I miss the days when every year or 2 Steve Jobs would come on stage and release a new mac that was the fastest thing you could buy.
Now Pipeline release something new that lags behind even budget PC counter parts.
