Steve Carell to return to regular TV role as male lead in Apple’s Aniston-Witherspoon drama

“Steve Carell is returning to television,” Lesley Goldberg reports for The Hollywood Reporter. “The Office alum has booked the male lead in Apple’s untitled morning show drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. The casting, which marks Carell’s first series regular role since he wrapped the NBC comedy in 2011, marks the latest high-profile star to join an Apple series.”

“Picked up with a two-season, 20-episode order, the drama offers an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning,” Goldberg reports. “Brian Stelter’s book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV serves as background for the series, which is based on an original concept by Michael Ellenberg.”

Goldberg reports, “Carell will play Mitch Kessler, a morning show anchor who is struggling to maintain relevance in a changing media landscape.”

Top of the Morning.

Thank you, thank you… and, thank you, Mr. Carell for returning to regular “TV” via Apple (and, more specifically, the Apple TV app)!

  1. Can someone explain why Apple is doing this? What happened to the 4 legs of Apple Core that Steve talked about so much. I must have missed something because it seems like they just threw that idea out the door. More Emoji for you!

    1. MacDailyNews already explained it (October 10, 2018):

Spend $1 billion to give it all way? For some perspective, remember that Apple is said to have spent well over 3X that in fraudulent iPhone repairs on China in 2013. $1 billion is a drop in the bucket to Apple. $10 billion is. When buying a Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, etc. gets you access to FREE exclusive hit series and other content, Apple’s so-called “competitors” will be deer in the headlights, with nothing to offer but their typical Apple knockoff products. They’ll then be forced to sign deals with other outlets to offer free NON-EXCLUSIVE content that can be found elsewhere.

Apple devices sales will increase, meaning the install base will increase, meaning Apple Services will increase and the cost of exclusive original content will bar the low-margin fragmandroid bottom-of-the-barrel scrapers from ever following. Hey Haw!

Smart move to make it a nice little perk of owning an Apple device.

    2. Alternating current?! Jet engines?! Atomic power?! Microwave ovens?! When is General Electric going to get focused back on their four core strengths of phonographic cylinders, D/C generators, 35mm film projection, and the incandescent bulb?? That’s what I want to know!

  2. Carrell had his shot in movies but TV/cable was always his métier. For the most part that’s where the action is anyway outside of super-hero, science fiction & magical theatrical franchises.
