“Apple is widely expected to hold an event this month to introduce new 2018 iPad Pro models, new Macs, and more,” Guilherme Rambo reports for 9to5Mac. “Much of this has been confirmed by evidence within the iOS 12.1 beta, which includes references to an iPad2018Fall device.”
“Today, sources familiar with the development of the new 2018 iPad Pro have offered additional details about the device, its features, and more,” Rambo reports. “The new iPad Pros will have an edge-to-edge display and will not feature a Home button, much like the iPhone. Unlike the iPhone, however, the iPad Pro will not have a notch. Even though the new 2018 iPad Pro models will sport thinner bezels, those bezels will still be wide enough to accommodate the TrueDepth camera system necessary for Face ID.”
MacDailyNews Take: Ah, the inelegant kludge goes poof! Hopefully, it’ll do the same on iPhone ASAP.
Rambo reports, “Further, we can confirm that Face ID on the new iPad Pro will work in both portrait and landscape orientations, though it won’t work upside down.”

MacDailyNews Take: About the Face ID and orientation, there must be more going on there than we know because it’s exceedingly trivial to rotate an image (dot pattern), even a 3D data set, x number of degrees in order to verify it. Could it be a speed issue? That seems unlikely, too, given the power and speed with which we see with real-time Portrait mode effects in the Camera app.
Oh, yeah, by the way, 9to5Mac also reports that “with its USB-C port, the 2018 iPad Pro will be able to output 4K HDR video to external displays.” What do you think about that?!
I just want the lightening cable to DIE. Now that we have one port (to rule them all) in everything lets get down to one port AND one cable. USB-C EVERYWHERE please!
I totally agree with you. I don’t like the lightening cable. I’ve gone through so many of them because they wear out faster than that extremely durable 30 pin iPhone connection.
Lightning is just as durable (or not durable) as the old 30 pin connector cables. The only difference is that people tend to yank on a lightning cable’s wire while on 30 pin people tended to grab the huge connector. Train yourself to only grasp the tiny plastic lightning connector and you’ll find they’re just as durable.
Lightning refers to the bolt from above and the cable. Lightening is a process during pregnancy when the fetus descends in preparation for birth.
More like one port to fry them all 🙂 USB can carry 100 watts and as long as the bad/good ratio for USB-C cables is as bad as it is, they’re doing the vast majority of clueless folks a favor.

I really wish they could engineer a way to put the camera in the middle of the iPad, underneath the display. Same thing with the iPhone. When one takes pictures or does FaceTime chats, you tend to look at the screen/picture, not the tiny black little dot somewhere near the end of the device. It is always just a bit off.
I recall reading about this years ago where the space between the screen pixels is where they wanted to put the sensors to capture images.
You are right I remember Apple taking patents out on that just before the retina screens were launched which I wonder put a dampener on the concept as I presume one would effect the other in the manner they planned to do it anyway. I still think one day it will happen but not being an engineer how without the compromises is beyond me.
