“Holiday wish lists may be filling up with requests for new Apple Inc. devices, which could add up to lackluster sales for the jewelry industry,” Tonya Garcia writes for MarketWatch.
“Apple introduced three new mobile phones and a new Apple Watch earlier this month. The iPhone XS Max starts at $1,099 and can cost up to $1,449; the iPhone XS starts at $999; and the iPhone XR starts at $749,” Garcia writes. “The Apple Watch Series 4 starts at $399 with GPS or $499 with GPS and cellular, but can reach about $1,400 for the special edition version created through a collaboration with the luxury brand Hermes.”
Garcia writes, “‘By charging more for these essential tech products, it’s taking share of wallet from other discretionary items,’ said Jaime Ward, group head of Citizens Bank’s retail finance group. ‘Jewelry will unfortunately be hurt by that.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Well, technically, Apple Watch is jewelery (and so much more), so this could actually be the best holiday season for jewelery ever!
That’s an odd and quite surprising headline. Most reviewers said these new iPhones were too expensive and hardly anyone would be buying them. Apple was seen as ripping-off consumers in a huge way with such minor iPhone upgrades. Everyone who did web site reviews claimed the iPhone XS and XS Max weren’t worth upgrading to and they were certainly ranting hard about it. Most analysts agreed Apple wouldn’t be able to sell many new iPhones and Android smartphones would yet again gain in market share percentage.
Most reviewers said consumers weren’t going to pay more for a smartwatch than they would for a flagship Android smartphone so Apple wouldn’t likely be able to sell many AppleWatches, either.
If any company was going to have a lackluster holiday season, it was definitely going to be Apple. At least that what was implied. It will be interesting see what really happens with Apple product sales by the end of the year. There’s an awful lot of people out there really don’t like Apple at all and hope to see the company fail.
No jewelry for my wife this season. Gold stainless Apple Watch with Milanese band will be more appreciated.
