“9to5Mac can exclusively share the first look of the new Apple Watch Series 4,” Zac Hall reports for 9to5Mac. “This is the new Apple Watch that we believe Apple will unveil at its [September 12th] special event announced earlier today.”
“The biggest change is the all-new edge-to-edge display. Apple has been rumored to be working on ~15% bigger displays for both sizes of Apple Watch — that rumor has been confirmed in the images we’ve discovered,” Hall reports. “As expected, Apple has achieved this by dramatically reducing the bezel size around the watch display.”
“Also seen in the image is a new hole between the side button and Digital Crown, likely an additional microphone, and compatibility with what appears to be current watch bands,” Hall reports. “Both the Digital Crown and side button appear modified from the current Apple Watch models as well.”

Square displays allow you to do round watch faces, but round watches do not accommodate rectangles or data that’s best presented in rectangles very well. – MacDailyNews, March 12, 2018

As if the very first question Apple asked themselves in designing the Apple Watch wasn’t “should it be round or square?” No, Apple just chose square without any consideration at all in a reckless act of industrial design neglect. Because this is how Apple works, they never carefully consider anything during the design of their products. Jony Ive just assigns new category products to the newest intern and that’s how it all gets done at Apple Inc.
“It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” — Steve Jobs
The majority of consumers today think they want a round-faced smartwatch because the majority of wristwatches through history have been round since basically all they have done/continue to do is to tell time and, ta-da, most clocks are round. Obviously, Apple Watch is much more that just a clock. Consumers thought they needed a beard of plastic keys on their phones and floppy drives in their computers, too. Because that’s all they knew. And then, somehow, they learned to Think Different™.
Just because “this is the way it’s always been done,” doesn’t make continuing to do so valid.
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” — Henry Ford
And, of course, Apple is renowned for bowing to consumer pressure to rush ill-considered designs to market. Happens all the time. That’s why Apple had large screen iPhones on the market so early instead of at least two years late (they didn’t release larger phones until they could do them right). And why they released that Apple netbook. And why they make $49 feature phones for third world countries in an empty quest for market share, too.
“Android watch makers [still have to] figure out they need to make square displays (lists are square, not round, and lists dominate smartwatch uses)…” — MacDailyNews, August 14, 2015

Round is wrong. — MacDailyNews, September 9, 2015
If Apple ever does release a round Apple Watch, it will be because they thought of something new that required it to be round, not because of consumers’ ingrained behaviors, misperceptions, or pressure. — MacDailyNews, September 27, 2015

… and if Samsung and everyone else can do it, why not Apple. I don’t give a crap about MDN reasoning, the Apple watch looks like a square wart.
Samsung watches look like a round tumour.
… it’s not a tuma!
square warts…so common in my world.
SWEEEEEEET!
Ready to tap the buy button… NOW !
Thank God it’s not round. Love the shape of my Apple Watch.
I love the red circle on the crown to show LTE without making the entire thing red.
LOL!! Massive, oh brother
Another rubish-ish toy for kids to play around costing a thousand bucks to be thrown away in a couple of years. Miserable consumerism, like having a 5k bucks pro computer with no replacement parts readily available and needing a Stephen Hawking to replace its RAM.
Oh, the garbage this company does today. Maybe someone could show them the PowerMac G4 or even the PowerBook G4 Titanium. Those were the times, when it was still the underdog fighting to be the best…
Put the crack pipe down, put your tinfoil hat back on, and go upstairs so mommy can comfort you.
Go back to your cave already.
Looks like some nice improvements.
I am unable to get excited about a computer on my wrist. It does not feel essential to my lifestyle. In a calamity, the iWatch will stop working shortly. Essential to my life is my iMac and iPad. My $12 Bulova with a mechanical movement tells me the time as long as I rewind it.
It’s difficult to know whether or not this leak is official or unofficial, with the latter not in Apple’s interest, so I am uncomfortable with it.
Evolution, not revolution. Despite all the hype, I still don’t really use my Apple Watch for much more than telling the time, seeing email notifications, tracking my gym workout and setting a timer for boiling my egg in the morning. I find most other Apps offer little value. Nice gadget, but not the revolution that Apple marketing would like you to believe. This looks like an evolution that will add little to the concept.
Interesting update but still loos like a medicine gadget for old people and not like a real watch
Preorders! Where can I do preorders?? Here is the money take it!!! Damn it!! I want one of everything!!
When I look at so much information crammed into such a small space my eyes start to water. My current Apple Watch works just fine thanks.
new watch face = holy cow – that looks freakin’ awesome!
But where is the notch at the top?
