Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey: I ‘fully admit’ our bias is ‘more left-leaning’

“Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said on Saturday that he ‘fully admit[s]’ Twitter employees share a largely left-leaning bias after facing accusations that conservatives are discriminated against on the social media platform,” Jon Bowden reports for The Hill.

“In an interview that aired Saturday on CNN, Dorsey said his company has a responsibility to be open about its political viewpoints, but to operate without bias when applying content policies to users,” Bowden reports. “‘We need to constantly show that we are not adding our own bias, which I fully admit is … is more left-leaning,’ Dorsey says.
‘But the real question behind the question is, are we doing something according to political ideology or viewpoints? And we are not. Period,’ he added.”

“Dorsey’s remarks follow criticism from the right over supposed ‘shadow-banning’ of conservative users,” Bowden reports.

Bowden reports, “Dorsey is expected to testify next month before the Senate Intelligence Committee on the issue of Russia’s election interference, and faces a possible subpoena from the House Energy and Commerce Committee over allegations of discrimination against conservatives on the platform.”

  1. And water is wet.

The answer to MDN’s question is: You cannot.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host or a social network, he switches channels or stops visiting.
A liberal demands that those he doesn’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God silenced.

If a conservative decides he needs health insurance, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

        1. Oh how I remember well flying into Detroit from East Asia that sunny day just a few years ago and reading the headline on the news stands in the airport: “KKK in Michigan”.

When did Michigan become the South?

Intolerance at Berkley and in the NW.

So, what section of the country is backwards and intolerant?

          Ignorance is bliss for you!

      1. Jobs was demonstrably libertarian and would have agreed with the ideas in the post. He made it clear many times with his support of individuality over groups and his disdain for unions. He may have registered Democrat, but he was no liberal.

      2. Steve Jobs who was on the “Left” as you say, didn’t flash his political viewpoint all over the place and he also didn’t give in to Cupertino city government request for free WiFi (00:02:15 in), when asked by Big Government pay your fair share Lefty CA politician. Notice how “Lefty” Steve, didn’t say you’re correct. Apple is rich and needs to pay their fair share. Rather “Lefty” Steve, reminded Cupertino politician that Apple already pays out the ass in taxes (my words, Steve’s essence). So, Steve may have been a “Lefty”, but a Lefty with a little smarts and good business sense.

    1. This illustrates the fundamental war between conservative rationality and liberal absurdity. Fortunately people are starting to see it now. The failure of modern liberalism, I.e. the last 50 years or so, could not have been more spectacular. Welcome back America.

      1. Fifty years of liberalism? Since the Nixon Administration in 1968? Nixon and Ford for eight years. Reagan for eight years. Bush the Elder for four years. Bush the Younger for eight years. Trump for over 1.5 years.

Add that up and you get 33.5 years of Republican Administrations over the past 50 years.

Think before you post your drivel.

        1. 50 years, you either misread the post or you don’t understand that Republicans and conservatives are not the same thing. Some Republicans (most today) are NOT conservative and embrace liberalism. That’s why they are mocked as RHINOs. thetheloniousmac did NOT err in his analysis.

        2. Presidents may affect society but don’t run them.

Just because a majority of states elect a Republican doesn’t mean our culture and standards haven’t moved to the Left even while a majority of adults are center-right.

Newspapers, radio, movies, TV, the internet and now social media are what influences society to the leftist ideology.

The fact so many Republicans have been elected President since WWII is proof to me that our society is trying to put the brakes on the culture of liberalism and Trump is the first since Reagan (and Ike before that) to say “enough is enough”.

    2. If a conservative is religious, he tries to impose that religion to the public space.
A liberal does not, they practice it within their private lives.

If a liberal is down and out, they get accused of taking advantage of the system.
When a “businessman” takes advantage of the tax system, he is “smart”. To the tune of a billion dollars, may even become President.

Liberals want gun controls to protect from crazy conservatives.
Crazy conservatives want the right to be crazy and dangerous.

When a “businessman” wants to grow his company he asks for a tax break, and expects all of us to pay for it.
Liberals want business to be accountable to society.

      1. Jeez, you didn’t get one thing right.

Ever try to “impose” your religion in public school? You don’t get very far. Liberal Hollywood, however, has better success of cramming the Left morals and values of alternative lifestyles down the throats of Americans then some Conservative religious zealot does.

Who created the tax system? Big government, as it gives the politician power to control. Who is a big arbiter of this Big Government scheme? Liberals, but not by much, you just as guilty GOP.

Gun Control/Crazy Conservatives, hmmm, you’d have to ask the Republican Softball Team about that one.

Why should a business not get a tax break to expand business? Liberal politiicans would just piss away that money on stupid big government. Libs don’t want business to be accountable. They want to be able to tell the people who pay them what to do. Just look at the NFL. There is a perfect example of the employees exercising their “bring your agenda to work day”. Now that business has lower attendance and less viewership. Way to be accountable Liberals.

    3. Sorry, old Fwhatever, but new Fwhatever believes that your list is so funny that it deserves public ridicule. If you truly believe that the people and their politics are so binary, then you are an utter fool.

Even people who fall within a segment of the sociopolitical spectrum disagree on many things. Your overly simplistic, holier-than-thou assertions render your posts irrelevant and pitiful.

Honestly, you need to get a clue. Your level of bias is insane.

      1. Sorry stupid imitation of First, but his list is an effective way to express the fundamental difference between liberalism and conservativism.

Liberalism is collectivism in short. The group has priority over the individual. The individual and his property are, as you say, “accountable to society.” In order to maintain this control over individual freedom, rights, and initiatives, liberals use government like a gigantic cudgel to wield power over people.

Conservatives believe in the individual and support individual liberty and rights. As such conservatives are the true champions of minorities when you consider the greatest minority is the minority of one, the individual.

This is the core concept of the founding of the nation. Individual freedom is the idea upon which conservatism, or Republicanism, or Americanism (whatever you want to call it) rests.

Liberalism vs. Conservatism aka Collectivism vs. Individualism aka socialism vs. capitalism. This has been our internal conflict for the better part of a century. “Does the individual’s life belong to him—or does it belong to the group, the community, society, or the state?”

As Fredrick Douglas wrote to his former slave master…

“I am myself; you are yourself; we are two distinct persons, equal persons. What you are, I am. You are a man, and so am I. God created both, and made us separate beings. I am not by nature bound to you, or you to me. Nature does not make your existence depend upon me, or mine to depend upon yours. I cannot walk upon your legs, or you upon mine. I cannot breathe for you, or you for me; I must breathe for myself, and you for yourself. We are distinct persons, and are each equally provided with faculties necessary to our individual existence. In leaving you, I took nothing but what belonged to me, and in no way lessened your means for obtaining an honest living. Your faculties remained yours, and mine became useful to their rightful owner.”

Douglass was a Republican and a renowned American conservative. Perhaps you consider him to be crazy and dangerous as well for wanting to escape his Democrat master.

        1. Exactly. Tyranny vs liberty. Control vs choice. Progressives can’t see the forest for the trees. Liberty was hard fought, and every bit lost is near impossible to regain.
Progressives think that we are moving toward a new enlightenment, ignoring history and what happens when iron-fisted control is within reach of those in power.
          “Nothing new under the sun”.

    4. Well done and points out the stark differences between ideologies today.

Musing about it, liberals in the 1960s when I was one (gasp) were much different back then and often wonder what happened.

Suspect the PC zero tolerance policies of today advocate suppression of expression unless it fits their narrative, which amounts to a variant of modern day free speech discrimination, but of course, for the greater good. Or so they tell us.

Steve was the classic example of pure liberalism that was not intolerant, understanding and proud, “Don’t tread on me.” It is refreshing to read Jack Dorsey believes in the exact same principles now lost by most major tech firms and the media in general.

The common sense good old days of yesteryear is non-existent today to the young ins’ that understandably never experienced the true meaning of both sides …

    5. “he switches channels or stops visiting.”
Very simply put. If you want to whine and have Facebook shut down, you are a conSnowflake aligning yourself with the snowflakes on the left. Same whine, different words.

  2. Ok. We are all entitled to our views. And how, precisely, does this make discriminating on a supposedly open platfotm ok? Pretty tired of how his phrasing (does the DNC send out a script?) is supposed to somehow magically justfy that self-admitted bias. What a tool.

    1. Twitter isn’t an open platform. It is a for-profit corporation offering a service under certain terms and conditions to customers who choose to accept those conditions. Like any other business, it has the right to refuse service to anyone (except on the basis of membership in a constitutionally protected class). Only socialists think that The People know how to run private businesses better than their owners.

      1. Heh heh. Strike one for the irony_desert.
Funny how the Trumpista continually fail to understand the law, protected speech and political nuance. Dogma trumps reality much.

  3. It’s up to Rightwingers to prove that left-leaning Dorsey and Twitter allegedly operate on Left-leaning principles. It’s not up to Dorsey/Twitter to prove their alleged bias for lazy and whiny Rightwingers.

  4. A privately owned website or platform is not a public square and does not have to honor any particular tribe. If you do not like Twitter’s political bent, buy it and change it, start your own or just ignore it.

I’ll stay away from the labels in use here in the USA because those being called liberals are hardly liberal in the classical sense and those calling themselves conservatives are hardly conservative. Most of us are neither- thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster, sauce be upon him. Amen.

        1. No but it is covered by another right.
And just like you said about Twitter, the customers can go somewhere else or start their own bakery.

There is no distinction between freedom speech and freedom of religion.

        2. When I was a child, I remember restaurant owners explaining to African-Americans that if they wanted a meal they could go elsewhere. Many of those owners were sincere Christians who were honestly convinced that God in Scripture had condemned race-mixing. Do you draw a distinction between that and the baker, and if so how?

        3. Never believe it. That is purely racial and not religious.
Oh they may have believed races should not marry and this is a common belief to this day in many parts of the world based on religion, race or culture. But what you are describing is someone using BS and hiding it as religion because they were simply not comfortable with being around “those people”.

I am from the South and have seen many thing in my life relating to race but never has someone made the argument that Blacks couldn’t be in the same place because of religion. Even if they were at the back of the bus or back of the courthouse or section of bleachers or a different jail cell they were still in the same area.

But by that same argument many liberal can’t stand the idea of someone simply because they have a different political belief and they will use whatever means possible to cause discomfort to those on the right. It might happen on occasion the other way around but I hear many more stories of people like Sarah Sanders’ than I ever do of a leftist being turned away and then taunted.

One thing I never heard about any of the bakery stories was the customers had to leave or were not allowed to buy anything in the store. The Gay Mafia reps were simply told that because of religious beliefs the bakery would not make a wedding cake for two of the same sex. Compare that to coffee shops running people out of their business because they were protesting abortion, or a family pizza parlor being harassed out of business for not catering a gay wedding.

The difference to me is that the people you are alluding to were the liberal elites of that period who used similar tactics to avoid Blacks and not true Christians to start.

        4. “The Gay Mafia reps were simply told that because of religious beliefs the bakery would not make a wedding cake for two of the same sex.”

What is often lost in this debate is the Masterpiece Baker was an ARTIST free to create his cake art as he pleases.

If gay activists walked into a photography studio or an art gallery and asked for custom photography or paintings that the business owner objected to on artistic freedom or religious grounds, same difference.

The baker only denied them custom art and offered to sell them anything in the store. So obviously this was a liberal activist setup, they got the media attention they craved and a Supreme Court ruling.

The most disturbing part, which is no surprise from the intolerant left, is to take away rights and jam their agenda down our throats. Not now, not ever — freedom!

I have new respect for Twitter and the only tech CEO taking a measured response to denounce censorship and support the First Amendment …

        5. Well, if burning an American flag is free speech, so is a custom baker ARTIST who cannot be coerced to create his art or violate his religious freedom for anyone. Like you said, go elsewhere …
