Ming-Chi Kuo: Apple Glasses coming in 2020

“Augmented Reality (AR) or Mixed Reality is different than Virtual Reality (VR),” Rene Ritchie reports for iMore. “Rather than being immersed in a fully-rendered world, AR/MR layers data on top of the real world.”

“Right now, Apple’s efforts are focused on ARKit, its platform for hundreds of millions of iPhone and iPad users. But Apple doesn’t see AR as a single product, like Microsoft’s HoloLens or Snap’s Spectacles,” Ritchie reports. “Apple sees AR as a core technology that will be part of many products coming in the future. Just like LCD and OLED are part of many products today. And that might just include Apple Glasses.”

“Apple supply-chain exfiltrator and TF International Securities analyst Kuo Ming-Chi is back with some new rumors surrounding a potential release window for Apple’s augmented reality (AR) glasses: Sometime in 2020,” Ritchie reports. “If Apple keeps up the pace of ARKit development, we should be on version 4.x by then, as well as heading towards Apple Watch Series 6.”

    1. Making smart glasses is the easier part. The tricky aspect is knowing why people will want smart glasses.

If Apple releases Apple Glasses, then the reason for them will become quite clear and there will also be a plausible business plan behind them too. Apple doesn’t just launch products because they are cool, they launch products because there is a purpose to them together with a way to make money from them.

I’ve no idea what Apple Glasses will actually do, but I have no doubt that Apple’s designers made that decision a year or two ago and have been refining and optimising their designs since then.

If a product is to launch in 2020, the design will already be virtually complete and they will be in a testing and finessing phase in order to specify components during 2019 for delivery in 2020. It’s not just Apple who needs to be ready, Apple’s supply chain needs to be primed and ready too.

      1. Good post, alanaudio! I would suggest just one subtle change:

“The tricky aspect is creating a technology platform that encourages people to figure out new reasons for why they want it.”

Apple designs products that lead to a variety of use cases, some of which the original product designers at Apple may not have envisioned.

        1. True the emphasis on the watch has certainly been modified and developed due to usage and opportunities. I expect the same will happen and probably more so with the glasses.

    1. Privacy and security issues would seem to limit them at “every door?” No business with any valuable IP, or “private info would allow them. That and many people will “flee” when seeing a “wearer” unless they’re willing to get posted online.

Maybe like cameras as every street corner, society will except “creepy” and another handshake with big-brother?
