Apple CEO Tim Cook addresses LGBT community at LoveLoud festival

“Tim Cook made an appearance at Utah’s 2018 LoveLoud festival over the weekend, sharing a few thoughts with the crowd before introducing the band Imagine Dragons,” Luke Dormehl reports for Cult of Mac.

“LoveLoud is a music festival celebrating the LGBTQ+ community,” Dormehl reports. “In his introduction, Cook said that those in the audience are a ‘gift to the world,’ and should not feel that they need to try and be, ‘what someone else thinks is normal.’ Cook then described himself as an ‘uncle, a sports nut, a CEO, a lover of the beautiful Utah outdoors, and a proud, gay American.'”

Dormehl reports, “In addition to speaking on stage, Cook also took pictures with people attempting the event, and signed autographs.”

  1. Cook should stay at the office during office housrs and do Apple work. How about a MacPro instead of a speech Timmy?

With Apple hardware falling so far behind there are better things for Cook to do.

      1. “Crappy” Apple spellchecker assumes the user isn’t intending a slur. Probably corrects your observations on racial matters to describe the country of Niger, too. It would seem like somebody named Gonzales might prefer it when “greaser” comes out as “greater.”

  2. If there ever was a fake community it’s “LGBTQ+” (how many more letters/symbols need to be added before this farce is utterly meaningless?) Gays don’t like lesbians, both think Bis are fence sitters, lesbians/women hate transgenders who they see as stepping on their victimhood turf, queer means anything but straight or what? And “+”… give me a break, this is ludicrous. I wonder if straight Americans are allowed to be proud too, or would that be racist or something?

    1. ” fake community” – Just because you don’t get it doesn’t make it any more or less real. Straight Americans certainly are aloud to be proud. In fact, straight Americans are welcome to attend any of the pride parades through out the world. We’d welcome you join us to celebrate your uniqueness.

      1. Sounds like you are piling on with the gay hate here on MDN. The gay community is united just fine and has differences just like any group of humans does. You should clarify where you stand on the gay issue. That’s assuming you have the courage to do so.

        1. Pointing out reality is not “piling on” snowflake. I have read many stories on the unrest and infighting of the gay community. Obviously you have not.

So, if I like or dislike gays it has no bearing on how the real world operates. My position on it is well known around here and I don’t answer to you ..,

    1. Pipeline does not care about the Mac Mini. That’s why it has not been updated for god knows how long. That’s why it is emphatically NOT recommended by any publication.

Pipeline does not care about the Mac Pro. That’s why there is no Mac Pro around for any publication to recommend.

Pipeline does not care about the MacBook Air. That’s why it has the most outdated panel you could ever lay eyes on and why it is not recommended by any publication.

Pipeline does not care about any of these products because Pipeline has no idea they exist. It’s not in Pipeline’s vision. Pipeline spends none of his time on these formerly useful products.

Pipeline does not care about the Mac, and it shows. Every day.

  3. This liberal activist Apple direction is very disconcerting. It breaks with Steve’s famous statement and tradition to keep the company OUT of politics. Obviously, Cook has no problem ticking off Republicans and conservatives and dragging the company to the extreme left.

Cook, did you consult your employees and board, or just run rogue with personal beliefs?

Cook, when are you going to speak at the NRA convention to balance the company?

    I thought not …

    1. Steve Jobs was an activist he just wasn’t as public about it. Did you know he negotiated insurance for same sex partners at NeXT back in the 90s? I thought not …

      1. Exactly!
Why the HELL should that be news???

Because the “new” activism is not about doing the right thing, it’s about celebrating an agenda.

Activism should be about getting something done, not just kneeling during the National Anthem like a spoilt brat.

So get off your knees and actually make a difference…

        1. You nailed more than one good point.

Steve was stealth so it did not reflect on the company. He did the right thing.

Cook on the other hand is a media dahling and virtue signaling personality. I don’t like it.

I have to laugh at leftists here that claim he did it on his own time. Like that means something and does not reflect on Apple. Yeah, right.

As you pointed out, what the hell does violating NFL policy and kneeling do to change the world?

All it does is to focus attention on THE players, media whores that they are. Why don’t they donate a month’s salary to help someone? Visit the poor neighborhoods and make a real difference? Hold a press conference in the hood. I won’t hold my breath.

Poke the eye of military veterans and disrespect the flag, how nice.

“So get off your knees and actually make a difference…”

          Amen …

        2. You are entitled to express your opinion, but not to make up “alternate facts.” Steve Jobs was not “stealth” about gay rights issues and he did not keep them separate from the company.

His views were Apple’s views. Their corporate policies concerning hiring, nondiscrimination, and benefits weren’t stealthy, but well publicized. The company used the fact that it was among the first large American firms to offer domestic partner benefits as a recruiting tool, not only in the LGBT community but more widely as a sign of Apple’s commitment to diversity generally.

Steve Job’s Apple did not treat their gay employees (or women, or minorities, or immigrants) as a shameful secret, but as equal partners with the rest of their workforce. The company saw that as a major plus for its image with customers, not just with employees. Jobs figured that there were enough people out there who shared his values to justify offending those who did not.

And it did offend them. In the early 90s, there was a major furor when a county here in Central Texas considered denying Apple a tax abatement agreement because of its pro-gay policies. Hundreds of people demonstrated over the issue, most of them for “traditional marriage” and against Apple. The dispute gained international attention (Tonight Show, BBC, the whole enchilada). It took a personal intervention by the then-Governor of Texas to pass the rebate. By that point, however, Apple had decided that the county might not be a good fit for its values, so it expanded in Austin instead.

Obviously, if you don’t approve of gay folks, nobody is going to change your mind. That doesn’t mean that you can rewrite history to make Steve Jobs something he was not.

        3. “Obviously, if you don’t approve of gay folks, nobody is going to change your mind. That doesn’t mean that you can rewrite history to make Steve Jobs something he was not.”

Steve Jobs was STEALTH! He was not a virtue signaling liberal media whore. You can’t rewrite history, which is a good thing.

I don’t appreciate your FALSE LYING that I don’t approve of gay people. I NEVER said that. You did, DISHONEST USER …

        4. GeoB, perhaps you should consider an English refresher course. I did not say that you (personally) don’t approve of gay folks. I said that IF you (generically) don’t approve, nobody can change your mind.

If you don’t know what “if” means, look it up.

I am not the one rewriting history. I knew most of the participants in the Texas imbroglio and I can assure you that I told the story accurately. Steve Jobs took a brave–and potentially expensive–stand by supporting gay rights in his official capacity as Chairman of NeXT, Pixar, and Apple when that was very rare in corporate America. He was loud and clear about it, not remotely “stealth.” Every major media outlet in the world covered the story. If that made Jobs “a virtue signaling liberal media whore,” he was fine with that.

        5. “If that made Jobs “a virtue signaling liberal media whore,” he was fine with that.”

No, he was stealth and did not wear it on his sleeve. I misspoke, point taken on “if” …

        6. Wisdom from a liberal LIAR? His whole existence here is FALSE, FAKE and the big LIE.

Obviously you have no problem with that because you support and recognize his liberal viewpoints.

Fine, just admit it for once …

        7. “The more that “liberal activism” bothers you and your ilk, the more it humors me.”

My “ilk”, what about your ilk? Bothers me? Libtards are no bother, seriously. I both laugh at their extreme antics and feel sorry for them at the same time. They inhale Democrat dogma and believe it is real, sad.

“You are so stupidly extreme about your views and your opinions of anyone who dares to disagree with you, that you create your own opposition.”

          Look in the mirror, Melvin.

“I don’t like extremism in either direction, in general.”

Yeah, right. Another liberal LIAR without a conscience trying to have it BOTH ways. PULEEZE, don’t insult our intelligence.

“But your far right attitude makes the far left look a little less ridiculous.”

How so and project much? You have a far left attitude. Self serving bloviating again as usual favoring one side of the political divide. You want wisdom, open your mind to all points of view …

        8. “Why the HELL should that be news???”

The short answer is if Steve Jobs did that today it would have been news and you would have complained about Steve Jobs being a social justice warrior strong arming the insurance company with his liberal agenda.

All you old white men need to get over it. The world is changing and there’s not a darn thing you can do about it.

        9. “Thank you for the RACIST comment. Reveals who you are.”

Pointing out reality is not “racist” snowflake. I’m sure I heard that somewhere before. Oh yes. You said it. The world is changing and there is nothing you can do about it.

You’ve got one thing backwards though. It is your comments here that reveal who you are. Now that you’ve revealed yourself that’s all I needed. Bye.

        10. No, no, no!

You made a RACIST comment that old white men can’t handle the world. You are dead wrong and can’t handle your mistake.

Spare us the obfuscation, we can handle ANYTHING. Libtards are just a warm up excercise …

        11. “You made a RACIST comment that old white men can’t handle the world.”

Not what I said and there was nothing even remotely racist in my comment.

You old conservative white men are the biggest most hysterical hand waving snowflakes I’ve ever come across. You’re using how offended you are by everyone as a deflection because you have no solid arguments to back up anything you say.

I won’t be wasting any more time on you. Just thought I should let you know how big a snowflake you are.

        12. “You made a RACIST comment that old white men can’t handle the world.”

You continue to make racist comments against white men.

Run away sonny, you bore me …

        13. It’s funny watching an Uber show his real colors.
They know as much about racism as they do economics, our political system, history…..oh I can go on like a teen with Viagra.

    2. The more that “liberal activism” bothers you and your ilk, the more it humors me. You are so stupidly extreme about your views and your opinions of anyone who dares to disagree with you, that you create your own opposition.

I don’t like extremism in either direction, in general. But your far right attitude makes the far left look a little less ridiculous.

      1. “The more that “liberal activism” bothers you and your ilk, the more it humors me.”

Bothers me? Libtards are no bother, I feel sorry for their extreme cluelessness.

“But your far right attitude makes the far left look a little less ridiculous.”

How so and project much? You have a far left attitude. Self serving bloviating again as usual and only looking at one side of the political divide you favor.

        Gee, what a surprise..,,

      2. OK, so Cook thumbing his nose at Jobs to stay out of politics is just fine with you.

“The more that “liberal activism” bothers you and your ilk, the more it humors me.”

Bothers me? Libtards are no bother, I feel sorry for their extreme cluelessness.

“But your far right attitude makes the far left look a little less ridiculous.”

How so and project much? You have a far left attitude. Self serving bloviating again as usual favoring one side of the political divide …

  4. Sure sign that Apple is maturing, this isn’t the little company from a garage anymore, they are huge and have a social responsibility. This is just Tim having fun on his day off.

    1. Political posturing mixing politics and business is not a sign of maturity. It is a sign of immaturity.

He did it on his own time means NOTHING. He has dragged the company into the virtue signaling political fray.

      Get a grip liberal …
