Apple inks deal to turn 1980s fantasy movie ‘Time Bandits’ into a TV series

“In its latest series play, Apple is closing a deal for the rights to turn the beloved Terry Gilliam-directed fantasy film Time Bandits into a TV series,” Mike Flemming Jr. reports for Deadline. “I’m told the series will be developed as a co-production between Anonymous Content, Paramount Television, and Media Rights Capital. Gilliam will be a non-writing executive producer alongside Anonymous Content and MRC.”

“Released in 1980, Time Bandits is a dark, irreverent adventure about imagination, bravery and the nature of our dreams,” Flemming Jr. reports. “It follows the time-traveling adventures of an 11-year-old history buff named Kevin who, one night, stumbles on six dwarfs who emerge from his closet. They are former workers of the Supreme Being who have stolen a map that charts all the holes in the space-time fabric, using it to hop from one historical era to the next in order to steal riches.”

Flemming Jr. reports, “Throughout the movie, they meet various historical and fictional characters, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Robin Hood, while the Supreme Being simultaneously tries to catch up to them and retrieve the map.”

MacDailyNews Take: It’s a great premise for a series, but diffuclt to make stick as the producers of series like Sliders, FlashForward, and Timeless will likely concur.

Good luck, Apple and the Time Bandits team!

  1. good thing i never saw that crappy trailer, or i would never have gone to see what turned out to be an odd, uneven, but pretty good film – much to the credit of the superbly deadpan sir. ralph richardson.

  2. As good as the movie may have been, for me it typifies stale Hollywood: yet another re-make. Why not crank out another insipid alphabet-soup, snarly-looks cop show? Granted, these companies have a hard job trying to create a marketable, entertaining product, but more often than not it’s has no appeal for me. I’ve seen the original painting, why would I want to see a copy? JMO, I guess.

  3. Finally, the return of Sean Connery!

Actually, this is Apple trying to spend its way into creativity.

Nothing Apple makes will probably interest me. Apple wants to be known as always politically correct, clean, carbon neutral or carbon pretty. Apple wants to be seen as intelligent, hip, courageous, young, diverse, etc….

To quote the Joker, “And it was all so boring.”

    1. Tim Ballmer’s sad sorry sack of a comedian license to be cancelled …now.

Eff off Tim, go look after your loser team of Baseballers. Better still, do us all a favor and go visit Steve Jobs personally, you’re more use up there where it’ll quickly be determined you’ve landed in the wrong spot and you’ll be sent straight to level 7 downstairs.

  4. Rhetorical question: why do all these people who so obviously hate Apple, and all it stands for, keep posting here? Surely even a sad loser could find a better way to spend his time.

It puts me in mind of all the people—possibly the same people—who went on and on for literally years about how Apple Watch was just a waste of money. As another MDN article points out, that “waste” has generated over $5 billion in revenue in the last year. The “pathetic” Mac offerings have won a steadily increasing share of the PC market. The “bug-infested” iPhone is sucking up most of the profits in the smartphone market. Obviously, the company could do better, but it is hardly about to shut its doors and sell off its assets, as Michael Dell predicted (before the leveraged buyout to save his own company).

If you don’t like the proposed series, don’t watch it, but don’t inflict your vitriol on the rest of us.

    1. I heartily concur. But then, whinge’ing, whining, a woeful lack of imagination and business nous, plus the willful ignorance engendered by prejudice and educational failure, pretty much guarantees a steady income stream for the new alt-right MDN.
I can remember when MDN takes were hilariously partisan rather than the pathetic polarizing polemics we get today.

    2. “but don’t inflict your vitriol on the rest of us.”

Boy, do you have a lot of nerve.

You come here daily with political vitriol lying and POSING as a conservative — denigrating and insulting ANYTHING Republican, particularly our hard working president.

      Hypocrite …

      1. Ok GoeB.
Cite one…just one, post by TxUser with even the faintest whiff of ‘vitriol’?…ever.
As usual you exhibit the same predictable “blame someone else for your own shortcomings” foolishness of someone seemingly blind to the bleeding obvious.

“You come here daily with political vitriol lying and POSING as a conservative — denigrating and insulting ANYTHING Democratic, particularly the previous president.

        Hypocrite …”

        Couldn’t put it better myself.

        1. Can’t figure it out, can you. So typical of the deranged left. I don’t have to POSE, FAKE and LIE as a conservative, pal. That’s USERs daily MO. Besides, I wasn’t talking to you ….

  5. Another tell that Apple has not one effing thing new to say in the market- just more of what is coming out of mainstream media outlets: retreads, remakes, remixes credited or just lifted. You can also factor in Politically Correct casting and editing of dialogue.

Can you imagine if the media today decided to re-make Blazing Saddles? It would be an unwatchable cringe fest instead of funny.
