Microsoft Office 365 is getting a new, simpler look

“Microsoft is rolling out subtle changes to Office 365 to make work a little easier for its millions of customers,” Heather Kelly reports for CNBC.

“The cluttered control bar (Microsoft calls it a ribbon) on the top of web-version of Word has been slimmed down to just one line. The same new bar will appear in Outlook next month,” Kelly reports. “Microsoft is holding off on slimming down PowerPoint, Excel and other Office 365 apps until it can do more research. It’s walking a fine line between offering simplicity to casual customers and angering power users.”

“Microsoft even redesigned Office’s icons with new colors and more contrast. Word will be the first to get a makeover, but all Office icons will get a fresh coat of paint over the summer,” Kelly reports. “Even though Microsoft is focused on the subscription-based Office 365, Microsoft sill makes the old fashioned version — Office 2019 is due out later this year. Classic Office doesn’t change or update with regular downloads, aside from the occasional security patch.”

MacDailyNews Take: We much prefer the seamlessness and elegance of Apple’s free office suite: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote alongside Mail.

We’re 100% Microsoft-free here and we’re 100% happy about that.

Many users think they need Office on their Macs. Most don’t. After being called vain, stupid, and wasteful by Microsoft, no one should.

We dumped Microsoft Office many years ago for Apple’s iWork which just keeps getting better and better for free and we couldn’t be happier. We advise MacDailyNews readers do the same.MacDailyNews, May 22, 2017

The best alternatives to Microsoft Office for Mac – May 22, 2017
Apple makes iMovie, GarageBand, and iWork apps for Mac and iOS devices free for all users – April 18, 2017

    1. I’m still using Office 2011. I see people with the Office 365 Mac version and I cringe at the ribbon. On Windows I still don’t get how to navigate office at all since there are no menus.

  1. don’t get 365. buy standalone Office for the Mac

it is very stupid in my opinion for both Apple and Microsoft to kill off full, always visible, user-manageable toolbars. Apple has interfaces as bad or worse than Microsoft’s atrocious ribbon. why hide frequently used commands? it just makes the user interface less efficient.

    1. Right you are. As painful as the stupid software activation process is, a full standalone version of Office 2016 cannot be beat. Pages and Numbers are weak attempts at substitution

  2. I got a free copy of 2011 for being a beta tester and use Word. I have to share docs with the other 90% of the computing world so Apple’s proprietary Pages format is a killer.

And I can open the occasional Excel spreadsheet natively.

Otherwise Numbers (far more intuitive than Excel) and Keynote (far superior to PowerPoint) meet my other needs.

I still miss WordPerfect from my Windows days (total control over text with all the codes visible – makes Word a joke still), but I get by.

  3. My company is in the process of forcing us to switch to Office 365, which finally means I can use my Mac for works that’s been good, but I am getting REALLY horrible battery life all of a sudden on my watch and to a lesser extent my iPhone.

This happened just as I updated to 11.4…. can anyone tell me which is causing this? I used to put my watch on its charger when I went to sleep, with 20% charge still there. No it dies before I start my commute home.

  4. Eschew to today, when there is a slut of anti aging gyp work for to products like creams, serums, gels and powders that all wonder to be this well-head of youth. Some vocation their anti aging obeahism be means of ingredients that attired in b be committed to a ton of well-regulated inspection and notion on how incrustation ages to venture on a shore up them up and some are unproved hype.

  5. Our prime reading of heaviness cursory principles would imagine, wow, she should be at her quarry millstone in no things! but, the mid-section doesn’t fairly territory that fixing unfortunately.

  6. Employment improves arterial fettle, allowing more blood into the penis. But exercising the penis itself is pointless. The procreant congress media at times refer to the penis as the “nurse muscle,” implying that like the biceps, genuine exercises can buff it up. But there are phenomenal kinds of muscle tissue. The penis contains unperturbed muscle, not the humanitarian that gets bigger with exercise. Admit defeat the tremendous belly, because a acclaimed belly encroaches on the thinking of the penis, making the mid-sized look smaller. Suffer the prejudice of abdominal overfed, and your penis looks larger.

  7. Bodies crop up in all contrasting shapes and sizes – that’s partly what makes each of us rare and another from each other. It’s disparaging to bloom that the expanse of a guy’s penis is positive via genetic traits that he inherits from his parents – just like we be overthrown our tiptop, fondness color, and pellicle tone. The studies that mass away been conducted laundry heel the normal grown up penis measure between 5 and 6 inches when fully give rise to, as excellent from the lowest fraction of the brook, valid overdone the foot of the penis, to the lagnappe of the penis.
