Slavish copier Samsung appeals $539 million verdict for peddling Apple iPhone knockoffs

“The jury may have made a decision, but the fight isn’t over,” Lori Grunin and Stephen Shankland report for CNET. “Samsung asked a court last Thursday to either dismiss the judgement in its phone patent fight with Apple or retry the case in which the damages were decided. In a 34-page post-trial motion filed with the US District Court in San Jose, California, Samsung says the jury’s $539 million verdict is ‘excessive’ and not supported by the evidence.”

“Last month, a jury decided Samsung must pay Apple $539 million for infringing on five patents with Android phones it sold in 2010 and 2011,” Grunin and Shankland report. “Earlier trials determined that Samsung infringed on three Apple design patents, which describe how elements look, and two Apple utility patents, which describe how they work. The jury trial, held in May, determined damages for those violations. The vast majority — $533 million — was for the design patent infringements.”

    1. Well they started looking for a weapons of mass destruction program in Iraq around 2003 and still haven’t found it, but the near genocidal death numbers of Iraqis piling up shows that they are getting somewhere.

      1. And again, let’s not forget the sad participation of the UK Labour government in the Israel/US Neo-Con-Job invented Iraq war. If only the UK had more sense.

[Note please that I’m a USA and UK dual citizen, so I get to bitch at both. :-Derek]

  1. I knew this would happen to Apple. They’ll be lucky to get any money from Samsung. It seems this case will go on endlessly without resolve as long as Samsung isn’t satisfied with the results.

    1. If and when they get paid it’ll come by way of dump trucks full of nickels. In South Korea, there is no shame in being a dirtbag. Matter of factly, they’re proud to be dirtbags 💩

  2. ScamDung will eventually pay more in court fees than what they owe to Apple. Those bastards just need to put on their big girl panties, quit bitching, and pay up!!

  3. Samsung needs to be punished. They need to pay all lawyer fees from the first trial and every trial thereafter plus the salary of each Apple employee who had to be in court to testify along with full payment of the salary of each person in the jury as well as every single person who had to get out of work to come to the court for jury selection. We the people should not have to use our hard earned tax dollars on this kind of childish games.

  4. Does seem rather endless. They’ve already been to the US Supreme Court, so you’d think they were done, but it got remanded to US District Court, where the case had already been decided for Apple, the shouting was only about the amount. The jury gave Apple $539M, and now Samsung appeals the amount. One would think this is their last shot. Either the judge dismisses their appeal, or retries the award amount, but that is pretty much it.

  5. … Lawyers love it. Let us keep in mind that BLAME for years of delay reaching the $539 million verdict lies specifically on Judge Koh and her incompetence during the original trial.

Justice deferred yet again. If Apple are really lucky, Samsung will be slapped with a HIGHER payment verdict due to their ridiculous appeal. It could happen! They certainly deserve it.

    Meanwhile… 💤

  6. Today, walking in the park to get my 10,000 steps in a saw a few piles of Samsung, why don’t some people clean up after their dogs. Do these people feel they are above everyone else so they leave their dogs Samsung behind for others to step in?
