“New developer guidelines released during WWDC set new rules for cryptocurrency apps distributed through both the iOS and Mac App Stores,” Stephen Silver reports for AppleInsider.
“Apple has added new language to its App Store review guidelines related to cryptocurrency,” Silver reports. “Under the Hardware Compatibility section, Apple now states that ‘apps, including any third party advertisements displayed within them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining.'”
Silver reports, “Cryptocurrency has interfaced with the App Store in various ways for most of the histories of both. AppleInsider talked about cryptocurrency and the Coinbase app in January.”

Because it’s a form of theft: “Thaw shall not steal,” said the Hebrew and the Christian God. But people follow that command situationally, depending on cost effectiveness and the vagaries of market forces.
Poor headline. Apple didn’t ban cryptomining on the Mac. They banned cryptomining apps from the App Store and iOS App Store. Huge difference.
You can go download any non-App store crypto mining app you want and run it on your Mac without issue.
It’s worse than that. I only read the article because MDN said “Apple bans cryptocurrency mining,” but as you pointed out, that’s not true at all. But what’s more, they’re not even banning it from the App Stores. They’re just not allowing apps that do SURREPTITIOUS cryptocurrency mining.
This is about banning apps that purport to do one thing, but go and make money for the developers in the background by sucking up battery cycles and inflating electricity bills of their users. Apple is totally right to do this.
MDN should correct this but they won’t because it’s clickbait as it stands. Screw honesty and integrity.
