“Since Apple CarPlay launched in 2014, Apple iOS users have been forced to use Apple Maps for navigation,” Liam Tung reports for ZDNet. “That will finally change with iOS 12, which allows users to pick whatever third-party mapping apps they wish to use for navigation.”
“Announcing third-party navigation support at WWDC on Monday, Apple showed an image of the CarPlay interface with Google Maps, Google-owned Waze, and Autonavi Navigation, a Chinese app,” Tung reports. “Apple Maps has improved since its launch on iOS in 2012 but still arguably isn’t as advanced as Google Maps for iOS and Android.”
“CarPlay does currently support a range of third-party apps mostly in audio but also messaging apps like WhatsApp,” Tung reports. “However, given the importance of directions when driving the choice of using a preferred and familiar navigation app should be good for iPhone owners.”

MacDailyNews Take: Good news for those for whom Apple Maps isn’t cutting it.
I wanted Waze and Google Maps to come to CarPlay, not because I’ll use them – I still find Apple Maps the most intuitive – but because a lot of other people love them and use them.
I found Waze great at first except on routes where someone decided to report every tiny bump in the road and it required too many screen changes to use as a driver. I want to keep my eyes on the road as much as possible.
Finally a chance to use one of Apple’s missed opportunities.
Not that it doesn’t cut it, it’s just that it’s not available in my country with turn by turn navigation. How hard is that? Thanks for letting us use Waze at least…
How would I add Google maps to my carplay?
Guessing they have to be updated, the waze and google maps app…. when that update will come is unknown…
Well First you need to wait for iOS 12
Then once it has been released and Google maps has updated their App accordingly, it just needs to be installed on your device that you use with your vehicle supporting CarPlay.
I’m looking for weather radar to be added. Some minimal functionality at least.
Apple does not want you staring at a Radar display on your car center stack, but integrating weather data into a smart navigation system would be great.
Waze?
No way in hell. Ever since Google bought them I deleted that app. Last thing we need is Google knowing your every move while in a car.
How would I add Google maps using my android phone?
