Apple will enable up to 4 external graphics cards in macOS 10.14 Mojave

“Apple said Monday that it will enable external graphics processing unit (GPU) support via its Metal applications programming interface (API) across the Mac platform,” Dean Takahashi reports for VentureBeat.

“The Metal API enables developers to access the hardware for performance-hungry apps such as games and visual programs, and now Metal can enable games and other apps to take full advantage of the GPUs available via external graphics cards,” Takahashi reports. “It can now tap as many as four now.”

“Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, made the announcement at Apple’s keynote talk during its Worldwide Developer conference (WWDC) in San Jose, California,” Takahashi reports. “He said you can add up to four external GPUs on an iMac Pro and speed performance up to 6.5 times for some applications.”

    1. Not likely.

Then again, given the last 8 years of complete Mac incompetence, maybe Apple is stupid enough to sell iMacs with the CPU and hard drive removed. For a premium price, you know, shaving 10 mm off the case thickness will cost the customer lots of money.

  1. I was under the impression that Apple included two separate TB3 channels in its pro computers. Perhaps that still isn’t enough bandwidth, but it is better than just one.

  2. Time changing wallpaper. I used a SUN workstation back in ~1991 that had a wallpaper with the moon going through its phases, in real time, corrected for my location on the earth. So day time and night time back drops….Yawwwwn.
