“Apple will release an updated iPhone SE in May, according to case makers who spoke with Japanese website Mac Otakara at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics trade show in Hong Kong this week,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.
“The case makers said the second-generation model will retain the same physical size as the current iPhone SE, and Touch ID is expected to remain, suggesting the device will continue to have a four-inch display sandwiched between top and bottom bezels for the home button, camera, and earpiece,” Rossignol reports. “Following in the footsteps of the iPhone 7 and beyond, the case makers do not expect the new iPhone SE to have a 3.5mm headphone jack. If accurate, and with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus likely to be discontinued in September, Apple would no longer sell any iPhone model with a headphone jack.”
Rossignol reports, “Also like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the new iPhone SE will supposedly be powered by Apple’s last-generation A10 Fusion chip, up to 40 percent faster than the A9 processor in the current iPhone SE.”

I won’t give up my iPhone X for this, but for other, more price sensitive buyers, this should be a great hit. A budget entry to the Apple ecosystem.
Budget entry will be the discontinued iPhone SE, which is a perfectly good phone for most people. Even now a brand new, unlocked SE can be had for $200.
Boo. Apple needs to release this at the same time as the others and be basically the same specs other than size. Just because I want this smaller form factor should not mean I am stuck with last year’s processor.
Remains to be seen if Apple will return a model to having a earphone plug like they did when they ‘abandoned’ smaller screen sizes for a few years.
Give me face ID, just because the form factor is smaller doesn’t mean we can’t have the latest.
i like the bump in specs and camera, but getting rid of the head phone jack is not great news to me
The likely demise of the headphone jack is why my wife just bought the current SE (to replace her even older iPhone 5).
And the headphone jack is also why I’m going to get a replacement battery for my 6s, rather than to buy a newer model iPhone.
Yes, we’re voting with our wallet. True, its a futile effort with as deaf as Apple has gotten to the concept of delighting their customers, but its still our wallet…
…and selling off the remaining AAPL stock is also on the ‘demise watch list’. Between stuff like this, the lack of customer support on the Mac mini, Pro, etc … all while spending $5B on their “Homer Simpson’s Giant Magic Doughnut” of an office building, they’re setting themselves up for a huge, catastrophic and irrecoverable failure.

No, it really isn’t.
Leave the jack alone. The SE should come with an option to include the top line camera from the X. Any space saving inside should be filled up with battery.
I’m convinced that some casemakers have three or four case mould models prepared in advance so they can immediately start production no matter what Apple chooses to offer.
If Apple continues to ship a 4 year old body, it might as well keep the headphone jack. This would be another example of Apple Ass Innovation.
If Apple does choose to abandon the ubiquitous world standard headphone jack, they might as well go whole hog and replace Lightning with USB-C too. The move is practically inevitable so Apple might as well get started on forcing the one-connector-for-everything model. Of course this won’t happen since Timmy’s business model is to make sure that physical connectors between iPhone and Mac never line up. This forces the buyer into adapters or overpriced wireless accessories so they can look like all he drone bees at the Cupertino hive. Today the headphones that come with the iPhone SE, with analog 3.5mm plug, are the only iPhone headphones that can be plugged directly into a MacBook Pro. Aftermarket headphones of much greater quality are also reliant on that beautiful simple “it just works” analog port.
Some people actually like to have one set of vey high quality headphones to use with all devices without a tiny dongle to lose.
One more thing: Apple uses the iPhone SE as the cheapest model to burn up old parts. That would make sense in emerging markets, but Apple discovered that there are a lot of price sensitive people in the USA too (duh!).
So rather than taking a smaller profit margin, the small entry level phone will never get the latest chips, the latest screens, or the latest cameras. It also appears to be mired in a chassis design warp from the iPhone 4 era. That’s what Apple will give you, and you will like it.
I’ll keep my current SE, 3.5mm headphone jack and all.
I still use the 3.5mm headphone jack, and I don’t want no stinking adapter.
