Zuckerberg admits Facebook collects data on non-users

“We’ve already learned quite a bit from Mark Zuckerberg’s grilling on Capitol Hill. But Zuckerberg also revealed another fact that is sure to worry anyone who doesn’t use Facebook,” Matthew Humphries reports for PC Magazine. “As many already suspected, Facebook collects data about non-users, too.”

“During Zuckerberg’s Wednesday appearance before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Ben Lujan asked him whether or not Facebook collected data on users who did not have an account,” Humphries reports. “‘In general we collect data on people who are not signed up for Facebook for security purposes,’ Zuckerberg said. Lujan asked if these are what is known as ‘shadow profiles,’ but Zuckerberg said he is ‘not familiar’ with that term.”

MacDailyNews Take: Bullshit.

“Lujan pointed out that, ‘You’ve said everyone controls their data, but you’re collecting data on people that are not even Facebook users who have never signed a consent, a privacy agreement,'” Humphries reports. “As Bloomberg points out, former Facebook employee Antonio Garcia Martinez has said this non-user data is ‘collected for growth reasons as well.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Again, those eyes. They’re perfect for the purveyor of Creepster Central. Lifeless eyes… like a doll’s eyes.

Zuckerberg is like a really early model that somehow escaped Westworld.

  1. It will be interesting to see what FaceBook does when the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in May 2018. It will prohibit many of FaceBook’s controversial practices while reinforcing the right to privacy and control of data for European citizens. Any company falling foul of the new laws will face fines of up to 4% of their global turnover.

FaceBook will either have to apply those rules globally, or else comply with them in Europe, but work to a lower standard in the US. I can’t see that latter option going down well in the light of recent revelations.

The issue of prior consent will certainly apply to FaceBook collecting data about people who are not FaceBook users. A related regulation, The European Privacy Directive will outlaw unsolicited and nonconsensual electronic communication, and require those making marketing calls to display their phone number on CallerID or use a special prefix used solely for marketing calls. In short, users should be able to block unsolicited marketing calls.

  2. No SOUL FckStick claiming he is the “Social Media” messiah. What a utter and TOTAL crock of SHITE.

This snake oil salesman, along with his minions have absolutely ZERO, NADA, ZIPPO moral compass. Read between these lines .!.. FckFace.

    God help US ALL.

Facebook NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN PERMANENTLY.

In closing. How hard would it be to launch a competing paid social network? All these snowflake, millennial, know it ALLS claim to be so fckin’ SMART.. right? Well THEN, get to work and come up with a better mouse trap.

  3. …as much fun as this is to watch The Zombie twist in the wind , remember: the really GOOD shit is coming…

Eric “The Mole” Schmidt is goin’ down.

    Thermonuclear. At last.

    1. @botvinnik:

You might notice that the Congressman is a Democrat from New Mexico and is the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Remember that the next time you rant about the “Democrat” Party.

This is what a real Congressman should be doing. We need a Digital Privacy Act to protect all Americans from predation online. This should not be a partisan issue, but the Telecom and Internet Lobby is strong on K Street. We need to clean up both parties.

      1. LOL – yea, the Dems are to pantomiming concern so Zuck (who is also pretty far left) will have no choice but to continue to “curate” *cough* marginalize *cough* conservative voices in their role of *publisher*, not as a platform. Earth to Zuck: you’re either a neutral platform or you’re a publisher. Platforms that curate are publishers – and therefore liable for every unlicensed image or libelous comment made on their pages. You can’t have it both ways, you Uncanny Valley-looking MFer.

Facebook was founded and is bankrolled on as much of your personal information as you provide them. That information has been scraped by Facebook since day one and third parties since day 2. If this comes as a shock to you, you’re probably not that bright.

Dems still blame fake news, bots and the alt right for Hillary’s loss. The explanation is far simpler: you just fielded the worst candidate in American political history.

        1. I did not field Hillary and she is hardly a Liberal despite all the disinformation from Trump & Company. She is what is commonly called a Corporate Democrat- on Social Issues she is center-left, but on everything else she might as well be a mainstream Republican.

I do not use Facebook- when it launched and I saw that users surrendered their rights to ownership of photos posted to Facebook I said not for me. I used to make my living as a Photographer and Zuckerberg & Company are not swiping the IP of my creation.

I am an independent and hope that one day the fever breaks and the Republicans can become a serious party once again. We need two healthy parties and they are both in need of help- the Dems are ICU sick and the Republicans are in the Psych Ward.

        2. Agreed and upvoted based on the need for 2 healthy parties. Forgive my premature judgment of your comment. I hope when you look at the Pew poll data from the last 10 years you realize that it isn’t the Right that’s changed so much Re: the issues; it’s the left that’s lost it’s mind.

  4. Collecting data on non-users, raping people’s privacy, gee why am I not surprised. It’s patriots like Zuckerberg that going to make Apple’s home nation the greatest terrorist nation in the world.

      1. Either that or the NSA is siphoning off the data for themselves or soon will be.

Does any of this stuff remind you of that old Prisoner series? “We want information, information…”

        1. Just as FB collects data that does not belong to the user, so the NSA collects data that it’s not authorized to collect. The parallel is right there.

        2. There are parallels for sure and unique characteristics that are grotesque in their own way.

One of the most disgusting items I read from Snowden apart from the phone metadata collection was some of the industrial sabotage commentary “If there is information at Siemens that they [the NSA] think would be beneficial to the national interests, not the national security, of the United States, they will go after that information and they’ll take it.”

Snowden has been making a lot of comments recently about Facebook and their non ethical approach to data. Again nothing very complimentary there but it puts a perspective on the situation.

It was a tough call for him but I’m glad that he decided not to betray humanity.

  5. It turns out that Zuckersnoop is a big a fraud as Facebook is!!

It’s really just pathetic how much info those bastards can dig up even for non-facebook users….Is this North Korea or what?
