Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg AWOL from Facebook’s damage control session

“It’s not just that he’s silent in public,” Spencer Ackerman reports for The Daily Beast. “Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg declined to face his employees on Tuesday to explain the company’s role in a widening international scandal over the 2016 election.”

“It was the first the company held to brief and reassure employees after, ahead of damaging news reports, Facebook abruptly suspended Cambridge Analytica,” Ackerman reports. “But Zuckerberg himself wasn’t there, The Daily Beast has learned. Instead, the session was conducted by a Facebook attorney, Paul Grewal, according to a source familiar with the meeting… Nor, The Daily Beast has learned, did chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg attend the internal town hall.”

“‘Mark, Sheryl and their teams are working around the clock to get all the facts and take the appropriate action moving forward, because they understand the seriousness of this issue. The entire company is outraged we were deceived. We are committed to vigorously enforcing our policies to protect people’s information and will take whatever steps are required to see that this happens,’ a Facebook spokesperson told The Daily Beast,” Ackerman reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Once again: The problem is two-fold: Facebook – and companies like Facebook that thrive on user data (Google, for one, if not the, prime example) and gullible users who piss their privacy and the privacy of their “friends” away willy-nilly while naively sending their DNA off to be analyzed by other companies.

      1. Nothing wrong with …mathom…’s comment. It’s not incorrect, nor is it rude or abusive. It’s a fair observation relevant to the article. Yet you, Me In LA, feel the need to call him/her a “prick.” For God’s sake, if you call someone a “prick” for posting what you consider to be a lame comment, it’s hard to imagine what you’ve got left for actual shitty people. Take it down a notch.

  1. Not to mention Zuck sold a hundred million in shares the week before this story broke… that dude is going to jail for something, I don’t know what it is, but he’s going there. Karma is a bitch.

  2. Mark & Sheryl are ALSO going to have to face the facts that the Obama team had apparently unrestricted access to FB data which various Democrat congressmen and others have referred to in the press along with the documented fact of the large # of visits to the White House by the former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt.

Maxine Waters specifically claimed that Obama Team had all the social media data in the democrats DB to target likely voters.

What goes around, comes around. I would be hiding out, too. FB & Google both make money by selling user’s data and the data of their friends. What’s new about that?

  3. look at how Facebook started: In college Zuckerberg created Facemash and it’s use was…

    Wikipedia:

“We had books called Face Books, which included the names and pictures of everyone who lived in the student dorms. At first, he built a site and placed two pictures, or pictures of two males and two females. Visitors to the site had to choose who was “hotter” ”

    ——-
from my thinking looking at that (putting people’s pictures to judge who is ‘hotter’ — invading privacy , humiliation ) , Zukerberg’s attitude and the DNA of Facebook was already flawed.

I don’t think Zuckerberg really understands human beings or privacy

    1. “I don’t think Zuckerberg really understands human beings or privacy.”

That’s an understatement. He was also a thief. Two other guys had Face Books and hired the worm to help with programming. He then stole it from them. He has no conscience.

  4. Empty pantsuit Sandberg doesn’t know which way to lean.

Zuck has always been an untrustworthy data thief willing to buy and sell private data to anyone willing to deal — that includes the RNC just as much as the DNC.

There is no point pretending that either corrupt corporate puppet party has the upper hand in this muck fest.

The question I have is: how’s the water level in the Swamp? The only change there seems to be added toxicity.

“If you have nothing to hide, you would encourage a thorough investigation.”

  5. And Cambridge Analytica subcontracted itself to one or more of the gov. spy agencies so they have every thing on all FB users, so this is the loophole that the US Congress wrote, that is, the spy agencies can simply buy commercial spy data that they are legally prohibited. Totally sucks.

  6. Ive run a business for over 11 years and there is a phrase that everyone in business knows…

“If a company is giving something away for free for a customer used (Fcaebook) then YOU the customer is the product”

No company EVER gives anything away for free unless there is something they want from the customer using their product, service, app etc.

Facebook is a free platform – why? Because it wants all your personal data to sell and make billions from large companies who need that data.

Data is the currency of the internet, and if people don’t realise this then they need to wake up!

Google does the same, Amazon does and everyone else (Apple not so much as it only uses data to produce better services and products)

    WAKE UP EVERYONE!

    1. Pete, your note on “wake up” appears to be what has started to happen even before the Cambridge story as FB’s quarterly users dropped for the first time.

I’m also aware that psychologists have noted the disproportionate use of FB by users who become obsessive and exaggerate in what they post. It is like those users want to enter a fantasy world they imagine will make themselves liked.

  7. Well, it only took about ten minutes to see that the far right still pretty much dominates this forum with political rants. Same story lines, too…if you think that what we are doing is bad, the Democrats did it first or worse. That is a great defense in grade school, but no so much in a court of law.

Have fun with your retroactive investigations. Why don’t you go all the way back to the 2000s and take another look at your boy “W”. Or even farther to Whitewater or Iran-Contra. The past behavior of others is not a defense or justification for doing something wrong or illegal. You have to own up to your own decisions and your own behavior. Blanket denials tend to have a very short effective life, and lies tend to stack up.
