“Apple is seeking a new U.S. trademark for its iconic multicolor logo, commonly referred to as the ‘rainbow’ logo, for use on clothing items, but don’t expect to see the mark adorning products at an Apple store anytime soon,” Mikey Campbell reports for AppleInsider.
“Like many Apple filings, the company first applied for the mark in Jamaica last June,” Campbell reports. “Apple’s retro logo entered the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Reporting and Monitoring System (TRAM) in December and was subsequently assigned to an examiner last week.”
“According to the filing, Apple’s mark, if granted, can be applied to pieces of clothing, specifically hats and caps. Though the trademark was filed with an “intent to use,” or ITU, it is highly unlikely that Apple will initiate sales of branded headgear or other similar products,” Campbell reports. “As a rule, the company submits marks on an ITU basis, even those it has no immediate plans of using, simply to protect the design.”
Campbell reports, “There is an outside chance that Apple might produce a small run of commemorative gear for internal distribution or sale at its Apple Park store, where shirts bearing the same mark are already sold.”

ISTR, the rainbow logo was associated with Apple Computer, Inc. and was dropped and replaced with the solid logo with the name change to Apple, Inc. after the ascendency of the iPhone.
Almost. The rainbow logo went away in the 90s. Apple used a white apple logo on the PowerBook G3 in 1998, and the 1998 iMacs didn’t have any rainbow logos at all. The rainbow logo remained in the menu bar in Mac OS 9 but was absent on the hardware.
The company name change didn’t happen after ascendancy of the iPhone; it was announced at the same event as the iPhone launch on June 29, 2007.

I’m assuming this is the basis for the iOS wallpaper? More recent Apple converts would assume a rainbow flag.
I still have my black Apple T-shirt with the rainbow logo I got for purchasing my HyperCard upgrade back in the early 90’s. Siiiiigh, good times.
I don’t understand the need for a NEW ownership filing? Rainbow pride parades, gay CEO, OK got that part.
But Apple used this logo for roughly two decades in all corporate branding and products, so again, what is the new need? Apple pride T-shirts? Just curious.
Actually, a 3-D rainbow logo on the upcoming MacPro might be retro forward cool …
