Apple’s iPhone X is an underrated masterpiece

“The iPhone X is the biggest risk Apple has yet taken with its most important product — the most influential single product in consumer electronics history — and what’s striking to me is how casually we’ve all accepted its success,” Vlad Savov writes for The Verge. “Apple fans and detractors alike both seem to have taken it for granted that the iPhone X would be as good and as well received as it has been.”

“Kantar Worldpanel’s latest data on mobile operating systems suggests that the X model helped Apple increase its share versus Android in some of the world’s biggest markets,” Savov writes. “Across Europe, the United States, Japan, urban China, and Australia, the iPhone X was one of the top three best-selling phones in December. Consider that this is a device whose starting price outside the US is even higher, starting at $1,400 or more, and it can inch close to $2,000 once all the necessary accessories are factored in. I’ll allow the legendary Walt Mossberg to sum up the consumer response to the iPhone X:”

“As usual, Walt is not alone in his judgment and experience. Everyone I have asked that has purchased an iPhone X has expressed happiness with that decision,” Savov writes. “All I hear about are the fluid and intuitive gestures to navigate the UI, the gorgeous display, the improved battery life, the futuristic ease of Face ID, and a bunch of other small things that make the user experience a happy one.”

  1. Looooove mine X!!! Best $1000 I’ve ever spent. Can’t even imagine how Apple is going to be able to come up with something better. Yep! Get the feeling many of them $1000 bonuses are going to find their way into Apple coffers.

    1. AT&T announced it will lay-off a thousand workers after announcing some workers would get a bonus. Wall-Mart announced it will lay off a thousand managers at it’s head quarters in addition to laying off 1500 co-managers.

The few large companies that have announced a one time bonus to some workers while they’ll themselves will receive tens of tens of millions dollars in tax cuts every year.

  2. One really have to own and use the iphone X to realize that the notch doesn’t matter, distract or ruin the iphone experience. You just completely forget it after a while, and later you start to understand that it had be there for one reason or other. Sometimes I am glad the notch is there because it differentiates this iPhone model from everything else.

    1. Are you on crack? You like the notch to differentiate it? You sound like the fanboies who used to sa6 how they liked the iPhone 4 screen size and did not want anything bigger.

Apple makes great products by not accepting your view, by not accepting imperfections and by trying to make the best damn kit that it can. That is what the iPhone X does for the most part – and that is why it is, so far, the best phone. Without the notch it would be even better.

      1. Idiotic reply, sounds like you don’t own one. The notch makes no difference whatsoever. The question is would you rather have the notch with all of its amazing technology now, or the iPhone 8/8 Plus and maybe 9/9Plus, before you finally get a new iPhone with no notch in 2018/19? If there’s one thing to complain about its the weaker battery life compared to the Plus, the ease of charging it wirelessly though just about makes up for it.

        1. Idiotic reply, sounds like you havent read the thread.

          1. It does make a difference – people want it to go.

          2. I’d rather have it than not. That’s not the point. We are talking about improving products.

    2. It doesn’t botter me either. Not in the least. What I like about it though is that I can tell the orientation of the phone. That way I can grab it correctly so that I can press the correct buttons, if I need to, without much tought.

  3. I can’t say how many have been sold but it sure seems there were a fair number of people who hated the product based on the high price-tag and the notch and they sure weren’t owners of the product. It doesn’t really matter. Opinions about Apple products have always been divided between love and hate. I’m not sure if it can be called a masterpiece but it does seem to be at least on the level of most flagship smartphones. What’s odd is that it seemed to generate more hate than the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8 and I’m not sure why. It’s just a harmless smartphone.

  4. An overpriced smart phone!
Seems we have groups of Apple users with misplaced/mis-spent priorities.
A 1000+ for a phone, even an Apple smart phone is ridiculous!
And the visible notch just looks like bad/lazy design thinking.

Again a bad phone design cue that costs $1000+

    No thank you.

This along with an iMac Pro STARTING at $5K and get to nearly $12K at its final price!
A Pro Mac doesn’t need to cost $10K+
What markets and users are Apple really catering to with these ridiculously priced products/computers?
