“In 2017, Apple disappointed some iPhone enthusiasts by releasing its hotly anticipated iPhone X in a single screen size — 5.85 inches along the diagonal,” Ashraf Eassa writes for The Motley Fool. “For many potential iPhone users, such a large screen in a device that’s not that much larger than the standard iPhone 8 (4.7 inches) is a clear selling point. Just look at how well the iPhone X seems to be selling relative to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus despite the high price.”
“However, other iPhone and, more generally, smartphone enthusiasts want devices with even larger screens than the one found on the iPhone X,” Eassa writes. “Next year, Apple is expected to release an upgraded version of this year’s iPhone X as well as a larger version of that upgraded model with a 6.46-inch display.”
“I think that phone could be a huge seller for Apple,” Eassa writes. “I think Apple can look forward to a large percentage of new iPhone buyers opting for the iPhone X Plus next year. I also think a lot of folks who held off on buying the iPhone X this year because it was too small will finally hop aboard the iPhone X train next year, which could have the effect of pushing iPhone unit shipments, and therefore revenue, up year over year.”

See the price progression? The iPhone X will be the same model sold this year with the standard one year old $100 discount. In 3 years Apple will no longer offer non-OLED iPhones as the yearly $100 discount will bring the price of OLED iPhones down to today’s new LED iPhones.

I didn’t get it either until I bought one. I actually started the return process on my iPhone 8 Plus. But after a couple more weeks, I wondered what I ever did without it. This big beautiful screen is spectacular. There’s no going back now.

Got an iPad Pro I leave at home. My mobile device is my iPhone. Any bigger will hinder mobility. A bit. Though I have fat fingers and typing is a surreal experience- predictably so. Constantly proof-reading… Yeah- I’d probably go for a X Plus right now…

The larger phone size seems to be killing the iPad mini. Sad because I love my iPad mini form factor. It is just the right size to carry around and can even fit in my winter coat pocket.
Plus, I apparently have fat finger tips as I still can’t type well even on the bigger phones. The screen size is still just too small for playing many games.
I may be in a small group of fans but I hope that a new iPad mini comes out in 2018 similar way to the 2017 iPad – it doesn’t have to have top of the line components but even a year back would be fine.

The iPhone X does not have a bigger screen than the iPhone 8 Plus, I don’t care how Apple measures it. It’s more narrow. Videos are either smaller or obscured by the notch. It’s basically a regular iPhone but longer in what’s sometimes an odd sort of fashion.
And for me, Touch ID is better than Face ID.
The iPhone X Plus will be bezeless without compromise, at least regarding display size because I doubt they’ll have Touch ID under the screen by then. But I hope Jony was just blowing smoke and they’re still working on the idea.
I can’t see in what scenario Touch ID is better than Face ID. The convenience of Face ID in cold weather and also signing into websites alone makes it “better”.
I can’t see Apple abandoning Touch ID. I have just come back from China and quite a lot of people there wear face masks, as I believe they do in Japan and other Asian countries. Of course Face ID will not work in that scenario. I only saw a single person using iPhone X in China, with 6+ to 8+ in common use. Asia must be a big market for Apple, which they won’t want to loose. So I can see the 8 Plus (or updated 9 Plus?) continue to be available until Apple works out how to fit Touch ID under the screen.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a big Apple fan. My whole ecosystem is Apple including my car. I had a iPhone when it first came out and owned one ever since. I know that this is Apple’s progression to Face ID. I am not sure to move to that in my next phone. Not like I was confident with Touch ID. I am on a 7 now but……
It’s fine to be cautious, but Face ID is outstanding. Some things are better done with Touch ID ( like not having to look at screen to activate it, but Face ID is fast, safe and plain fun. The iPhone is touch oriented and has always been eye candy. Bringing visual functionality to it expands the iPhone to a balanced touch and visual device. Adding in AR expands the visual pleasure of using an iPhone. Apple sells premium experience and this is a premium phone.
I wonder if it will install iPad apps. I have some apps that work well on the iPad but either don’t install or don’t run as well on the iPhone.
That is one reason why I use both my iPhone X and iPad Mini.
I’ve bought a new iPhone every year since 3G and the App Store premiere in year 2. This is the first year I’m gonna skip. Happy with my iPhone 7 Plus ‘til Apple ships the X Plus this Fall. Then I’ll be buying it right away. I view the X as a downgrade from 7 Plus or even 8 Plus. I want a bigger screen not smaller. I also love Touch ID and am not a fan of Face ID although I understand I’ll have to accept it going forward. 😔
I think you’ll change your mind once you use a X. The screen is slightly smaller but overall it’s an ideal size for the hand. I don’t miss the home button one bit, Apple has done themselves a disservice by not promoting the fact that you don’t just swipe up for home, but use it as a back button in many apps, which is much more efficient and elegant than pressing arrows on the screen.
My initial thought was to upgrade to the X+ immediately next year, but I’ll wait and see how people like holding it. I got used to (somewhat precarious) one-handed operation of my 6+, but if Apple releases anything wider than the current Plus models, it’ll require two-handed use for most users.
I understand why others may like larger or smaller, but the current iPhone X is the perfect size for ME. I had a 7 Plus and it was just too big and heavy. I would actually like the next X to be a little slimmer and lighter. I believe Apple will do the same with the X phones as the recently did with the iPad Pros; that is, the only difference is device size.
I am anticipating no iPhone 9, but an iPhone SE2 (4.5 inch or so display in similar to current SE size) introduced in March followed by an SE Plus (with a smaller than 8 Plus device size, but larger 6.1 inch display) introduced in September. These will be the entry level phones with a mix of iPhone 7, 8, and X parts and features including the A11 Bionic enabling Face ID across the line. The SE line may start at $449 or $499 for a 32 GB model, metal case (no wireless charging) iPhone 7 (perhaps 8) rear camera, no front portrait mode, no headphone jack, 2GB RAM, a notch, and an LCD display. The SE Plus with 3GB RAM and dual rear camera will likely bec$150 more at $699 or $749 also at 32GB. Add $100 to get the 128 GB version of SE2 or Plus. (The current SE will likely be discounted to $299 or less and will primarily be sold in developing markets.)
In essence, there will be the equivalent of the iPad and iPad Pro. Apple may even drop the SE designation and call it simply iPhone. They would have the iPad and iPad Pro (2 sizes), and the iPhone, iPhone Plus, and the iPhone X (2 sizes).
A box of cow manure with the Apple logo on it would be a big seller. Just listen to the incessant hyperbole about the X here on Fanboy Political News. There isn’t a secure computer chip on the market but the fanboys here can’t wait to entrust their photographic identity to Big Brother Apple. The next AWS or iCloud hack will be very interesting. By iCloud, I mean Google Web, the actual company hosting Apple’s overrated web services.

I was one of the first to get a Plus when they first came out – but on getting an X this year, find that is the perfect size for me, as much as anything because it comfortably fits in my pocket. An important consideration for a mobile device I take everywhere. I have an iPad Pro for most work when out and about, or travelling, so have no plans to return to Plus size next year.
I got both an 8 plus and an x. I’ll be upgrading my x if there is a plus. For me the x is not small enough or big enough. The middle size is not for me. I keep going back to the plus as my daily device.
Also, I think i am going to say I like Touch ID better than Face ID. If a spec’ed up SE is released this year I may go to that as one line, and a plus on the other.
