Vuzix to debut first Amazon Alexa-enabled smart glasses at CES

“The first augmented-reality glasses with Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant will be shown next week at CES in Las Vegas — manufactured by a 75-employee company rather than the e-commerce giant’s growing devices division,” Mark Gurman reports for Bloomberg. “Vuzix Corp. will show off a pair of smart glasses that can talk to Amazon.com Inc.’s voice-activated digital assistant and display information to the wearer’s field of view, Vuzix Chief Executive Officer Paul Travers said in an interview. ”

“Vuzix’s Alexa integration is part of an Amazon program that allows third-party hardware manufacturers to put the digital assistant into their products,” Gurman reports. “In October, Sonos Inc. unveiled a smart speaker with Alexa’s system for controlling music playback. The strategy is designed to put Amazon’s service, which generates revenue for the company, in as many places as possible to sell more products.”

“Vuzix will release its AR glasses by the second quarter at a cost of about $1,000, Travers said. While it’s a ‘high price point,’ he said, ‘the ultimate goal is to have it under $500, and we’ll be able to do that’ by 2019. Wearers, who must be Amazon customers or become Amazon customers to enable Alexa’s capabilities, could for example ask the digital assistant to pull up a map or display sports scores on the glasses,” Gurman reports. “Apple is aiming to have the technology ready for its own augmented reality glasses by 2019 so that it can release a device by 2020, Bloomberg News reported last year.”

MacDailyNews Take: After the inevitable launch delay period passes, we can’t wait to ask our $2,500 Apple Glasses for the sports scores so Siri can tell us, “I can’t find a Starbucks location near you right now.”

With bated breath, we tell you, with bated breath!

Oh, alright, we’ll be positive (the beckoning glint off a keg rolling down the halls of the palatial MacDailyNews headquarters works every time)! So, maybe by 2020, Apple will finally have their shit together, Siri won’t still be riding the short bus to AI school, and real artists will ship something insanely great – and on time, even!

Interns: Make it so.

    1. They are. Babe one exciting new surprise product in the last five years.
      Exactly.
So many obvious places Apple should be a player. Where’s the game console? Fuck Netflix but Sony. And Netflix!!! See done. Problem solved.

Oh can’t ? Why? The do it yourself.

Duh Just read a wsj article saying most millennials could care less about $1000 smartphones and this most are good enough. Same article said in China the x clone is so cheap it’s disposable. And just as good.

Apples peaking out like a rock band with an old classic hit. Draws the fossils. Still has a career.

But won’t play to enterprise? And forgotten at education? Sad.

      Eh. Those are tiny markets.

I mean there’s a surfer who may have to phone home while catching a wave. Cool co cent rate only on him.

And steve would have kicked Jimmy Iovine ass for bailing.
And where’s that embarrassment Dre. ?

  1. Heh! Apple should have a dark shilouette of the invisible hand of MDN in the lobby of the new HQ. I love seeing the anti-smart glasses psyops campaign begin.

I gave 4 Amazon echos this Christmas alone. These glasses don’t look bad at all. Apple will never catch up in this market. They are as far behind as Microsoft was with smartphones.

I can’t wait to get a pair of these.

    Peter Capaldi would be proud.

  2. *Clunk*Clunk*Clunk*

The sound of progress in the fields of smartglasses, VR/AR and AI. I’m personally stunned at the craptacular nature of these fields at this period of time. Hype has clearly hit the brick wall of reality.
