South Korean dishwasher maker Samsung preps knockoffs of Apple’s Face ID, Animoji, Secure Enclave

“Starting off the new year by introducing its latest custom smartphone processor, Samsung has revealed some of what we might expect from its next Galaxy S flagship,” Vlad Savov reports for The Verge. “In among the usual claims of improved performance is an intriguing tease of using neural networks and deep learning for more sophisticated face detection and object identification in images.”

MacDailyNews Take: Sounds familiar for some reason.

“The company identifies ‘realistic face-tracking filters as well as stronger security when unlocking a device with one’s face’ as the major advantages,” Savov reports, “which will be familiar to most people as headline iPhone X features: animoji and Face ID.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yes, that sounds familiar, too.

“The Exynos 9 Series 9810, to give it its full title, is almost certain to figure at the heart of the upcoming Galaxy S9,” Savov reports. “The chip will also have a separate secure processing unit for handling sensitive personal and biometric data (such as facial, iris, and fingerprint scans).”

MacDailyNews Take: Sounds familiar, yet again.

MacDailyNews Take: When you buy a device from a South Korean dishwasher maker, you’re always quite far (not to mention quite the) behind.

God only knows how many of these half-assed clones will blow up in the settlers’ faces as the serial thieves cut corners in their mad scramble to knock off in months Apple innovations that are the result of years of research and refinement.

Intelligent, moral people don’t settle for iPhone knockoffs.

  1. Samsung’s 3D facial recognition will get high praise from the tech industry. All of their flagship smartphones will be loaded with tons of features and the tech-critics will be happy as they claim Samsung is far more innovative than Apple. There will be the typical, “Apple has lost its mojo” meme and Apple’s share price will take another hit.

Apple won’t compete with Samsung on a feature for feature basis and Wall Street will believe Apple has lost any advantage it ever had in the smartphone industry. Apple will continue to be the lowest valued major tech stock. I’m prepared for all of it. The most aggressive companies always get the highest praise and Apple appears to be the least aggressive tech company around.

  2. While an opinion may be folly, it’s sad to see censorship happening over pointing out real facts of a changing headline.

I guess MDN wants to hide the fact that it has changed the headline (a familiar tactic here) so that it points out a dishwater maker while all the time there is no comment about it in the real article.

The fear is so telling when the censors drop by.

  3. “When you buy a device from a South Korean dishwasher maker, you’re always quite far (not to mention quite the) behind.”

To paraphrase the Bootntown Rats, I think
‘the silicon chip inside your head, has gone into overload’, Apple may need to throttle you.
