“Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro models released in 2018 will feature octa-core processors, based on Taiwanese supplier TSMC’s improved 7nm manufacturing process, according to Chinese website MyDrivers,” Joe Rossignol reports for MacRumors.
“The report, citing sources within Apple’s supply chain, claims the eight cores in the tentatively named A11X Bionic chip will include three high-performance ‘Monsoon’ cores and five energy-efficient ‘Mistral’ cores,” Rossignol reports. “Like the A11 Bionic chip in the latest iPhone models, which is built on a 10-nanometer process, the A11X chip will reportedly feature TSMC’s integrated fan-out wafer level packaging, or InFO WLP for short.”
Rossignol reports, “Apple’s current 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models have an A10X Fusion chip based on TSCM’s 10nm fabrication process.”

If you don’t think an iPhone / iPad are computers, you are sadly mistaken. Display, Processor, RAM, Input Device, Network hardware, Storage, it’s all there buddy!
Yes, they are computers, but iOS is much more restrictive with they ways you can get data on and off of the device, much more walled in garden.
It will mean very little without apps that can take advantage of it. Apple still hasn’t release it’s own professional apps for iOS yet and that speaks volumes.

And, if Apple can make an eight core, then they can extend the architecture to massively parallel processors with dozens of cores for Pro machines.
Interesting. Someone seems to dislike the idea of A-series based Macs. But just with a downvote – no explanation of why. It doesn’t matter, of course. The transition to Apple designed processors is inevitable. If “owning the core technologies” is important to Apple in the iOS device space, then why should it not be important in the Mac space, as well? Seems logical to me.
Switching to an A series platform for Macs is a very easy thing to say verses actually putting that idea into action. Cost drives such an idea both internally and also externally for customers which is currently prohibitive. There is enough business for Apple right now for the A series platform as well as for other techs that are soon coming and on the boards.
Seems odd. Why do you need so many low power cores in an iPad?
Seems obvious. Battery life.
It kinda irks me that the iPad processors are almost a year behind the iPhone (I know the X versions offer more but still). The A10X based iPads Pros are only a couple of months old them WHAM, new iPhones touting the A11 bionic chip are released. Then we have to wait until next fall to get the A11X on iPad pros. Ugh!
I wish they would align better.
