After Trump administration sunsets DACA, Apple CEO Cook vows to work with U.S. Congress to protect ‘Dreamers’ in email to employees

“Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, more commonly referred to as DACA, is a controversial Obama-era immigration program that helped undocumented immigrants who arrived to the US as children work and study without the fear of deportation,” Roger Cheng reports for CNET. “They’re referred to as Dreamers.”

“The program will end after a transition period over the next six months, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a press conference on Tuesday,” Cheng reports. “The move by the Trump administration fulfills one of the campaign promises made by President Donald Trump.”

“Cook, in an email to employees obtained by CNET, vowed to work with members of Congress to ‘advocate for a legislative solution that provides permanent protections for all the Dreamers in our country,'” Cheng reports. “Cook said Apple would provide support, including advice from immigration experts, to the Dreamers who work at Apple.”

Sessions said the DACA program represented an overextension of the president’s executive power and said it was up to Congress to set up immigration policy. ‘As the Attorney General, it is my duty to ensure that the laws of the United States are enforced and that the Constitutional order is upheld,’ he said during a press conference. ‘Ending the previous Administration’s disrespect for the legislative process is an important first step,'” Cheng reports. “Cook said Dreamers work for Apple in 28 states, and that for many, the US is their home.”

MacDailyNews Note: Cook’s email to Apple employees, verbatim:

Team,

America promises all its people the opportunity to achieve their dreams through hard work and perseverance. At Apple, we’ve dedicated ourselves to creating products that empower those dreams. And at our best, we aspire to be part of the promise that defines America.

Earlier today, the Justice Department announced that President Trump will cancel the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in six months if Congress does not act to make the program permanent.

I am deeply dismayed that 800,000 Americans — including more than 250 of our Apple coworkers — may soon find themselves cast out of the only country they’ve ever called home.

DACA recognizes that people who arrived in the United States as children should not be punished for being here illegally. It lets these Americans, who have successfully completed rigorous background investigations, go to school, earn a living, support their families, pay taxes and work toward achieving their dreams like the rest of us. They are called Dreamers, and regardless of where they were born, they deserve our respect as equals.

I’ve received several notes over the weekend from Dreamers within Apple. Some told me they came to the U.S. as young as two years old, while others recounted they don’t even remember a time they were not in this country.

Dreamers who work at Apple may have been born in Canada or Mexico, Kenya or Mongolia, but America is the only home they’ve ever known. They grew up in our cities and towns, and hold degrees from colleges across the country. They now work for Apple in 28 states.

They help customers in our retail stores. They engineer the products people love and they’re building Apple’s future as part of our R&D teams. They contribute to our company, our economy and our communities just as much as you and I do. Their dreams are our dreams.

I want to assure you that Apple will work with members of Congress from both parties to advocate for a legislative solution that provides permanent protections for all the Dreamers in our country.

We are also working closely with each of our co-workers to provide them and their families the support they need, including the advice of immigration experts.

On behalf of the hundreds of employees at Apple whose futures are at stake; on behalf of their colleagues and on behalf of the millions more across America who believe, as we do, in the power of dreams, we issue an urgent plea for our leaders in Washington to protect the Dreamers so their futures can never be put at risk in this way again.

Despite this setback for our nation, I’m confident that American values will prevail and we will continue our tradition of welcoming immigrants from all nations. I’ll do whatever I can to assure this outcome.

Tim

    1. Why didn’t the feckless Obama permanently fix this immigration mess when he had a rubber stamp with both the Senate and the House early in his first term?

Because he wasted his mandate to instead ram Obamacare down our throats which was designed to quickly implode and force single payer socialism on the country, that’s why.

As he’ll have to do with North Korea, Iran, health care insurance, etc., by rescinding the DACA overreach, President Trump is merely cleaning up another of Obama’s many messes.

      1. OMG, can you hear yourself rant? The immigration policy is one issue that congress will deal with and hopefully in a humane fashion. But you are so far up Donald’s ass that you always have to bring in other issues not particularly germane to the issue at hand and generally in an offensive way and often putting your own (wrong) interpretation (read spin here) on it.
With North Korea, Trump is playing with matches and he is out of his intellectual depth (kinda like you). Problem is, we just laugh at you as you are harmless and amusing in a pathetic sort of way but the Donald could hurt many people OUTSIDE of the US and that concerns all of us.

        1. If one holds Trump’s move today in high regard, don’t be disappointed when Congress’ MO will be to ensure nobody is hurt, regardless of the law. DACA parents/children will all be brought into the fold. We are a country where being nice, not mean, causing no challenge is the highest aim. What law?

        2. With North Korea, Trump is playing with matches and he is out of his intellectual depth (kinda like you).

You have no intellectual depth. All you have Buster, is DOGMA. DEMOCRAT DOGMA …

      2. If the Democrats were to have fixed it [illegal residents], they would have lost a wedge issue.

Some might argue that this point makes no sense because it’d be better to have the installed base of potential Dem voters via amnesty, but the Dems don’t care because they believe they are getting the votes anyway through lax registration and enforcement at the polls.

Using it as a wedge, Dems can claim the “sympathetic” moral ground.

      3. Actually he did after dealing with the financial meltdown. He even said congress shoul did a permanent solution. But we all know, the do nothing, obstructionist republican congress was in charge and there was the concerted effort by republicans to bring America down through obstruction…and numerous useless investigations.

But you weren’t looking for an answer. Just slinging more racist mud.

      1. I just sent a MacBook Pro to a DACA kid starting college in the fall. I met him when he was just a little thing and we bonded over Teen Age Mutant Ninja Turtles. His father used to clean a building I worked in. Now he’s majoring in physics with dreams of working for NASA. His father helps me out on occasion.

It’s easy when it’s ‘them’ but once “they” become people, it all gets blurry.

While Obama was wrong to try and create immigration law via executive order, these are not typical criminals. They are not murderers, rapists, drug gang people, and thieves. They are people who have bought off on American culture, celebrate it, embrace it, and live it. They are pushing education, excellence, success, and achievement. We do have common values. IMHO they deserve to be here, far more than many of the people who were born here and have nothing but hate for America.

So I will be waiting to see what Congress comes up with. Here’s hoping Republicans don’t just sit there and look stupid leaving this all up to Democrats.

        1. This is a nation of laws, not memos from an Obama flunky. If DACA should be law, then let Congress pass it. Until then, it is unconstitutional and illegal.

        2. Anchor babies away, my boys, “Dreamers” away.
Farewell to socialist joys, you sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay.
Through your last night on shore, drink to the foam,
Until we never meet once more,
Here’s wishing you a happy voyage home.

        1. The “pile of excrement” is the treasonous idiot in the above video intentionally breaking his oath to defend the constitution…and YOU are the moron that still supports him.

        2. President Obama. A man that dealt with a difficult situation and was manly enough to admit it was imperfect and ask congress to do their job.

A republican congress. But her emails, but his birthday certificate, but Benghazi, etc, etc.

Donald stump hides behind the Keebler elf. Begs congress to please give him some kind of victory so he again won’t look like the weak, pathetic excuse of a president that he is.

Some kind of victory. Red meat for rabid supporters.

Man this is fun. Sparring with mental midgets.

        3. No such thing. Educated people know that. There are former Presidentsor when directly addressing them you still say President. Like President Carter or President Clinton.

        4. It’s from the laughter of listening to woketard losers like you moaning about your continual losses. lol, and it ain’t gonna be nothin’ compared to 2018.

Better get on suicide watch, Bob.

        5. I guess in your deluded mind, you’ve halucinated some imaginary post of mine but I can assure you I have never said anything about losses?

But hey, keeping lies straight is hard work for a weak mind like yours.

        6. Obama wouldn’t even do an EO himself and take the heat….the pussy had a DHS flunky write a “memo.”

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to be Bob.”

        7. But, but…wouldn’t an EO been unconstitutional?

Again, you can’t think because you are a rabid dog. Running around the neighborhood leaving your piles of scat and you have plenty of followers eating it up so you get away with it.

        8. “Regurgitating Breibart’s propaganda is the best you can do,bottvinnk?”

So, I guess you prefer regurgitating Huffington Post’s propaganda instead? Or possibly you prefer Rachel Madcow or meltdown Don Lemon is more to your liking ..

        9. The real world, you can’t suppress free speech. They will find a way. In botvinnik world, false outrage about suppressing free speech, is used to shut down others.

          Right wing nut job hypocrite.

  1. BTW, Timmy, these 800,000 “dreamers” which you refer as “Americans” are nothing of the sort. You insult actual Americans by deceitfully labeling ILLEGAL ALIENS “Americans.”

We can see right through your lies, Timmy.

AAPL shareholders should demand to know how much Apple is spending to lobby Congress on this issue as well as how much on the “support they need, including the advice of immigration experts.”

    1. In fairness, most of the people covered by DACA have known no other home than the USA, although they are illegal aliens in the view of the law.

Trump is doing the right thing here, because if one talks about “American values” as Tim Cook has, one of the first that must be respected is “separation of powers” – meaning that CONGRESS makes the laws. It’s about time we get a President that recognizes where his authority ends and where Congress’s begins.

    2. I posted a long item on this issue on the other thread today, so I won’t repeat it. They are not “illegal aliens.” About half of them were brought into the US legally and their families then overstayed their visas. That is not a crime even for an adult, but a “civil offense,” like overstaying the time you paid for on a parking meter. The adults can be deported but not imprisoned.

The other half were brought in illegally, but since they were below the age of criminal responsibility, they have committed neither a criminal nor civil offense. It isn’t a crime to be in the US without citizenship, and never has been, or the government would have been prosecuting the American Indians before they became citizens in 1924.

DACA was simply a recognition that the US Government cannot go out today and deport 11 million undocumented persons before tomorrow. It has to set priorities, with the highest being those who have committed serious violent offenses and working down from there. Unless Congress hands ICE the Defense Department budget, they are never going to reach the lowest priority people. Clearly, that is the young folks brought to the country as children who have unspotted criminal and educational records—the Dreamers.

That leaves the question of how to handle those lowest priority undocumented aliens. Are we (1) going to allow those people to remain in the country indefinitely without the ability to attend college or legally hold a job while waiting for them to commit a crime to feed themselves, or (2) let them get work permits under a plan to eventually achieve legal residency and citizenship?

      Seems pretty simple to me.

    3. Don’t you self serving xenophobes ever think that these are human beings? Even more that they are innocent kids? Go ahead and fix your immigration rather than blaming others and hurting kids.
F2T2, more and more I think you and buttvinnik are simply hate filled racists prepared to hurt young kids if it suits your ideals.

You really are sick and need help.

        1. Bullshit. Where the fuck did you pull that inaccurate number from?

If anything, DACA applicants are less criminal than the US population on average because they have to apply and submit to a background check. The program worked very well to identify what kids were worth keeping around so immigration officers could concentrate on the real problem cases

        1. …in other words, Obama knew it was unconstitutional and he consciously chose to break his presidential oath to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

          yeah, so “help me allah.”

        2. Actually, Obama has admitted nothing of the kind. He has explained DACA as an exercise of prosecutorial discretion, a concept that is well recognized and has been since the dawn of the Republic. It works like this:

There is not, and never will be, enough police to investigate every crime and arrest every criminal. Law enforcement has to make choices every day, like whether to spend the time to book a shoplifter or respond to an armed robbery call. Likewise, there aren’t enough prosecutors or courts to try everybody who could potentially be charged with a crime.

Given the unavoidable need to allocate limited resources, serious crimes get prosecuted while petty offenses are plea-bargained down, dismissed, or never filed. That will be true as long as the taxpayers are unwilling to pay for all the investigators, prosecutors, clerks, and judges that would be needed to try everybody, and for all the jails that would be needed to house them.

The Supreme Court of the US recognizes this concept and has held that the people who are prosecuted have no right to complain because other people were not. Prosecutors can only try cases one at a time, and they should start with the most serious and work their way down.

An additional factor is that public prosecutors are subject to an ethical duty “Not just to prosecute cases, but to see that justice is done.” Again, that dictates that serious offenders go to trial and prison while petty offenders sometimes walk. The people who represent a public danger will always be the highest priority.

DACA is simply a set of guidelines for the Department of Homeland Security to use when determining who should be deported because they are not a citizen and who should be denied the opportunity to work while they remain in the country indefinitely due to being the lowest deportation priority.

Obviously, it would be preferable for Congress to write the guidelines for exercising prosecutorial discretion, rather than doing it by an administrative rule. President Obama gave the Congress every chance to do that and it failed to do so. At that point, the only remaining choices were to allow individual federal employees unlimited discretion in setting priorities for enforcement or adopting uniform national standards—DACA, in other words.

    1. Hey Buttvinnik,
Have you ever noticed that you get many votes but they are always negative? Can’t you take the hint that everyone here thinks of you as a lightweight and a hater? Cook is as much of a traitor as you are a caring person.
Stop being such a dork and find something else to do. Welfare is NOT a career……

      1. Hey Busternuts:
Have you ever noticed your party has lost the majority in every federal and state level? Have you ever noticed that you are a fringe coastal party? Have you ever noticed your party leaders advocate violent anarchists? Have you ever noticed that your previous presidential monsters have positioned us on the verge of nuclear war?

nah, that slipped by your libtard radar, huh?

        screw you.

        1. Busternuts. You are a comic genius!!!

Have you ever noticed that I am not American but I do represent American values as they often mimic Canadian values. In fact, world values.
No you haven’t noticed because you are a hate-filled ignoramus who would send innocent HUMANS to a foreign country and strand them there. Canadians would never do that and I am sure most others would not too.
Maybe you should petition to give away your Stature of Liberty and it no longer represents who you are as a people. I am sure most Americans would fight you on that as I know there are decent people in your country despite all the white supremacist crap we see int he news and promoted by Orangehead.

    2. Hey bott-wipe, you little skidmark, you ; )

Haha! It’s simple but I’ll explain it to you: To remove DACA is CRUEL and unnecessary. If an executive order was an inappropriate tool, at least Obama made an attempt to humanely and compassionately deal with these children in limbo when the obstructionist congress would not. At this point in time these human beings are more of an asset to our country than a detriment. They are personally innocent, and removing DACA will ruin their lives! How CRUEL to just send a person who knows only our culture and speaks only English and send them to Mexico where they have little or no affiliation or language? Answer: Despicably CRUEL! This is not making America great, this is making America shitty and ugly! Kind of like you!

Tell me, truly, how these people living in our country are hurting you, personally. The truth is, they are contributing positively to our economy and in the long run that benefits all of us! You stupid piece of shit

It never ceases to amaze me how you TRUE fascists love to label your opponents fascists! And you TRUE, Russia-puppet traitors are quick to label your opponents traitors! You guys always take your own most egregious and most obvious flaws, name them, and quickly label your opponents with them before they apply them to you. It totally works! Donald’s drooling hillbilly racists and sewer dwellers (such as yourself) eat that bullshit right up! FAKE LABELS!

It’s so entertaining to see you’re still licking the traitorous Donald’s piss off the floor with a smile. Let us know when your tummy gets too full and we’ll Heimlich you out so you can get a fresh start!

      ESAD, bott-wipe, ESAD!

      1. uh, it wasn’t an executive order, XCon, it was a memo edict by a flunky in Obama’s DHS. The Muslim Usurper didn’t have the guts to take the heat for the unconstitutional farce.

    1. You DO realize that the “dreamers” can’t have ANY criminal record. Nearly all of them have jobs (the average age is 26). They are literally the LAST people we should be kicking out of the country. They didn’t come here illegally — they were brought here as children… Big difference if you allow yourself to get over your obvious hatred of brown people.

      1. I agree. The thing is, though, that we’re a nation ruled by LAW, not by men. We can’t have Presidents ignoring the laws and making up their own on the fly; that way leads to despotism.

Trump is trying to set things right here, and avoid the lawsuit which would end DACA by the stroke of a judge’s pen – and the protections enjoyed by 800,000 people who have never called anywhere but the USA their home, but who are illegally here according to current law.

        1. You need to go through the potty training first before you get to go to the kindergarten. Now you are just throwing sand in the sandbox and peeing in it. Nobody likes that.

        1. My wife is a naturalized American citizen born in the United Kingdom, so I have some experience in dealing with the immigration process. Even given “ample time,” legal immigration isn’t easy… if it is even feasible.

It is essentially impossible for someone who is inside the United States without legal authority to “get legal” without leaving the country and applying for legal entry at a foreign US Embassy or Consulate. New applicants go to the end of the line and must compete for a limited number of entry slots with those who have no history with the USA.

If the family left their country of origin because it wasn’t safe to live there (think Helmand Province or Sinaloa State), it is going to be a lot more unsafe for somebody who has never been there as an adult, doesn’t know the local culture, and may not even speak the local language. In some cases, the child was born after leaving his parents’ original country but before arriving in the US, so it isn’t even clear what his citizenship is or how he could possibly locate the required documentation to file a visa application.

To repeat: these are cultural Americans who have never been an adult in any other country. To qualify for DACA, they must not have a criminal record and must be either working or in school. What is the point in deporting them under circumstances that may not allow them to ever come back?

        2. “DACA applies to individuals up to age 31 (as of June 2012, so 35 now) — hardly children; consequently, many Dreamers have long-since terminated their studies and most have committed multiple felonies in order to get jobs — Social Security fraud, forgery, perjury on I-9 forms, falsification of green cards and drivers’ licenses, identity theft, etc. Dreamers continue to commit these job-related crimes right up to the day their DACA status is approved and they obtain work permits and their own genuine Social Security numbers.

In addition, many illegal aliens qualifying for DACA status have previously been arrested and convicted of multiple misdemeanors and some have previously been or continue to be associated with violent gangs, as evidenced by a report in the Seattle Times that states that over 1,500 Dreamers have had their DACA status revoked since 2012 due to their involvement with criminal gangs.”

          https://cis.org/Mortensen/DACA-Granting-Amnesty-Dreamers-Committing-Crimes-While-Abandoning-Their-Victims

        3. The real problem is once you make an exception for one class of people, that becomes a slippery slope that will be used against the government to allow another class of people to skirt the law and stay. I truly feel for the Dreamers, but where does it end? Most other countries do not tolerate immigration violators like we do. Maybe there should be an exception and be allowed to apply for citizenship under some strict but expedited rules, but then again, somebody would cry foul and it never ends.

        4. The U.S. allows immigration violators with a caveat. Allow me to elaborate, TD:

Democrat administrations pass laws allowing the SPECIAL exemptions, like the gold standard DACA.

Democrat administrations do not enforce U.S. border laws fully telling officers to stand down.

Democrat administrations create safe spaces for illegal aliens called “sanctuary cities.”

Democrat administrations encourage local police departments to defy the law by not holding violators, detaining illegals or cooperating with ICE and other federal officials.

Democrat administrations free illegals multiple times into the general population and some commit murder of innocent citizens indiscriminately (Kate).

Democrat administrations fight tooth and nail to DENY transparency in our voting booths called vote ID.

Democrat administrations have no problem using taxpayer dollars collected from ALL parties to be used in various forms by illegals.

          I’m sure I missed a few.

So, why is it mostly a problem for Americans? Answer: Democrat administrations.

Compassion? Yeah, on the face of it. Kinda like People for the American Way, National Organization of Women, ACLU, NAACP, et al. — on the face of it FARCE.

The REAL reason the “plantation party” does it? (apologies to Botty).

Democrat voter registration drive GRANDE! The public assistance benefits come later, in like flint for life … 🤔

      1. It is slow when you have such an incompetent executive and congress, not to mention the least technically astute supreme court.

With administration staffers lasting 1-2 years max, key consultant Kushner desperately seeking any communist investor he can find to bail out his NY high rise train wreck, and Prez Cheeto Trump busy golfing at those reosrts he owns that are not yet destroyed by a weather event that, you know, could never possibly be influenced by mankind trapping unprecedented levels of energy in the earth’s atmosphere, and of course also with republican infighting and drama, like anything good will happen for the American people. The swamp cannot be drained when Americans elect such slimeballs to represent them and to run the nation. Same goes for the corrupt democratic senator Menandez who should be publically fined, tarred and feathered.

In two years or less, Trump will be seeking to resign with no accomplishments, no friends, and not a single slimeball drained from the swamp in DC, or maralago, or the rest of the swamps where the vacationer in chief spends most of his time at unprecedented taxpayer expense.

  2. My response to Cook’s message, inline with everything he had to say:

America promises all its people the opportunity to achieve their dreams through hard work and perseverance. At Apple, we’ve dedicated ourselves to creating products that empower those dreams. And at our best, we aspire to be part of the promise that defines America.

Earlier today, the Justice Department announced that President Trump will cancel the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in six months if Congress does not act to make the program permanent.
(Actually, the announcement said that the program would be cancelled whether or not they acted, so they had best get busy!)

I am deeply dismayed that 800,000 Americans — including more than 250 of our Apple coworkers — may soon find themselves cast out of the only country they’ve ever called home.
(It may be the only county they’ve ever called home, but if they had officially, legally made themselves Americans, it would be a non-issue.)

(Yep. And surely anyone who has been through all that they have been through should have no trouble following the laws of our land and becoming legal citizens.)

(Good for you, Tim. Now how about you actually do that rather than saying you are going to do it? That’s why Congress can’t get anything done either. All blow and no go. Note, too, that this is exactly what Trump is asking them to do. So good of you to offer your support.)

We are also working closely with each of our co-workers to provide them and their families the support they need, including the advice of immigration experts.
(Awesome! Was that so hard? DACA can then become a non-issue, as I suggested above!)

(Ummmm… I believe in the power of dreams, but also that of obeying the laws of the land. The solution you stated above is perfect, and that not having been done before is what is really putting these people’s futures at stake.)

Despite this setback for our nation, I’m confident that American values will prevail and we will continue our tradition of welcoming immigrants from all nations. I’ll do whatever I can to assure this outcome.
(Yep, American laws and the processes for establishing those laws will finally now prevail. Sending folks to immigration lawyers is a great way to ensure this outcome – and to avoid this setback in the first place.)

    1. “…I’m confident that American values will prevail…”

they did prevail, the Constitution IS American values…Congress makes laws, not flunkies from the executive branch of a treasonous administration.

      1. The Constitution is not a list of American values. It was intended to be a living document recording the rights and responsibilities of how the new nation would conduct its affairs. Ask anyone one the street what are his values and he will go on and on about his religion, his family, and his community relationships. He will seldom if ever refer to the Constitution as a daily guide, and when he does, it will be in selective snippets and often out of context.

The constitution, sadly, is being used by nefrarious factions as a political weapon. The absolutists would have it become outdated without refinement forever, the legalists would like to create excruciatingly complex (i.e., profitable) law on top of it, and blogger simpletons will refer to it as if it was a trump card in a debate, exposing their ignorance of government with every sentence.

But it is nice to finally read one of these online arguers finally admit that Trump’s administration may have committed treason. Cooperation with a foreign power in order to change an election outcome should be delt with very harshly. After all, isn’t that what you read in Section 3 of the constitution?

        1. uh, Max, you missed the Soros memo, you guys aren’t doing the Rooskie thing anymore, it’s all-Nazi all the time now.

I hope you don’t lose your troll license over this.

  3. Once again, putting the issue to one side (which is a shame, it’s an important issue), who the eff does Tim Cook think he is? I am so tired of this man I could spew. He is the ultimate corporate mouthpiece for a never-ending stream of radical leftist propaganda, the epitome of arrogance. Apple is damned lucky their stuff is the best and that Google is such a reprehensible pile of ****, or I’d have jumped ship by now.

      1. Yes he is, indeed.

And for all the wrong reasons. The liberal ideology of today is closed minded. The conservative ideology of today is open minded.

Cook hitched his political wagon to the party of the past that no longer exists …

  4. Someone cut this from Cook’s script:

“Don’t worry, my little mijas- I got your backs. I need your lower wages to get me to a $billion net Worth!

And besides, breaking the law is easy, if you have enough K-Y….”

    Bring the hate, Apple sluts…..
