IDC: Consumers are increasingly opting for smartwatches instead of basic wearables

“Turns out, a lot of people are here for smartwatches,” Angela Moscaritolo reports for PC Magazine. “Market research firm IDC reports that the market for smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Android Wear devices grew nearly 60.9 percent during the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year. Overall, wearable tech makers shipped 26.3 million gadgets worldwide during the quarter, a 10.3 percent year-over-year increase.”

“An interesting shift is currently taking place in the market: consumers are increasingly opting for smartwatches instead of basic wearables that don’t run third-party apps, IDC says,” Moscaritolo reports. “‘The transition towards more intelligent and feature-filled wearables is in full swing,’ according to IDC Senior Research Analyst Jitesh Ubrani.”

Moscaritolo reports, “‘About 41.7 percent of all wearables today have an embedded GPS, up from just 24.5 percent a year ago,’ Ubrani says.”

MacDailyNews Note: IDC’s report states, “Apple’s growth continued to outpace the market as the Series 1 and Series 2 are now mature products with the clear and concise purpose of fitness. This has boded well for Apple as the company has been slowly expanding its reach among health insurance providers. The release of the latest Watch OS [sic] later this year is also expected to bring much anticipated features like a Siri watch face to the wrist.”

  1. Just heard Leo Laporte on KFI Radio more or less bad-mouthing the Apple Watch and questioning whether it was really doing well. On top of that he was saying the only area Apple now excels in is the iPhone (to some degree that might be true) but then was saying “Hey that new Samsung Note 8 is looking good.” What an Android toady shrill shill Laporte has become! Routinely giving terrible advice.

He’s turned my stomach for years now, a long way from his Screen Savers days. Such an idiot to be allowed broadcast space to give “authoritative” tech advice. He needs to be put out to permanent tech pasture and off the main credible voice stage along with Dvorak, Thurrott, Enderle and others. Leo please STFU and take your exposed appendage pics with you.

    1. Leo is a douche bag has been and still wannabe. He needs to fade out quickly. Apple watch works for those who wear it, it doesn’t work for those who criticize it without even trying it. And they are in the former category with old Leo there.
