In a move organized by FWD.us, the immigration reform group led by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, business leaders from across the country have released an open letter encouraging President Trump to preserve the DACA “Dreamers” program and calling on Congress to pass the bipartisan DREAM Act or similar legislation.
In 2013, POLITICO obtained a prospectus for what would become FWD.us which stated that Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Silicon Valley investor Marc Andreessen were founding members of a group named “Human Capital” and detailed how the technology executives would use their companies to ‘control the avenues of distribution’ for a political message in support of their efforts.
Under a section called ‘our tactical assets,’ the prospectus lists three reasons why ‘people in tech’ can be organized into ‘one of the most powerful political forces.’
1: We control massive distribution channels, both as companies and individuals. We saw the tip of the iceberg with SOPA/PIPA.
2: “Our voice carries a lot of weight because we are broadly popular with Americans.
3. We have individuals with a lot of money. If deployed properly this can have huge influence in the current campaign finance environment.

As entrepreneurs and business leaders, we are concerned about new developments in immigration policy that threaten the future of young undocumented immigrants brought to America as children.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows nearly 800,000 Dreamers the basic opportunity to work and study without the threat of deportation, is in jeopardy. All DACA recipients grew up in America, registered with our government, submitted to extensive background checks, and are diligently giving back to our communities and paying income taxes. More than 97 percent are in school or in the workforce, 5 percent started their own business, 65 percent have purchased a vehicle, and 16 percent have purchased their first home. At least 72 percent of the top 25 Fortune 500 companies count DACA recipients among their employees.
Unless we act now to preserve the DACA program, all 780,000 hardworking young people will lose their ability to work legally in this country, and every one of them will be at immediate risk of deportation. Our economy would lose $460.3 billion from the national GDP and $24.6 billion in Social Security and Medicare tax contributions.
Dreamers are vital to the future of our companies and our economy. With them, we grow and create jobs. They are part of why we will continue to have a global competitive advantage.
We call on President Trump to preserve the DACA program. We call on Congress to pass the bipartisan DREAM Act or legislation that provides these young people raised in our country the permanent solution they deserve.

President Donald Trump is expected to rescind an Obama administration policy that protects from deportation nearly 800,000 immigrants who as children entered the country illegally, setting the stage for a fight with U.S. business leaders and lawmakers over tough immigration policy.
A senior administration official told Reuters on Thursday that the plan could be announced as early as Friday and that Trump would let the so-called Dreamers stay until their work permits expire. Trump, a Republican, had pledged on the election campaign trail to scrap all of Democratic former President Barack Obama’s executive orders on immigration.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters that Trump and his senior advisers were still reviewing the DACA program and that the president not made a final decision on how to proceed. Asked whether Trump still stood by a comment in February about treating Dreamers “with heart,” Sanders said: “Absolutely, the president stands by his statement.”
Ten Republican state attorneys general in June urged the Trump administration to rescind the DACA program, while noting that the government did not have to revoke permits that had already been issued. If the federal government did not withdraw DACA by Sept. 5, the attorneys general said they would file a legal challenge to the program in a Texas federal court. The effort was led by Texas and joined by state attorneys general in Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. Kayleigh Lovvorn, a spokeswoman for Texas attorney general, on Thursday said her office has no plans to push back the Sept. 5 date.
Immigrants who entered the country illegally as children have been able to qualify for DACA if they were under the age of 31 when the program began on June 15, 2012. They would have to have entered the United States before they turned 16, however, and to have lived continuously in the country since June 15, 2007.

These are not illegal immigrants, because they were too young to be criminally responsible for entering the country. They are simply noncitizens residing within the US, like American Indians before 1924. As such, they do not have the rights enjoyed by other residents, absent some exception such as DACA or the Dreamer Acts. DACA does not allow new entries into the US, since it only applies to those who have continuously lived in the United States since 2007.
Nobody is saying that we should have open borders. The question is where to draw the lines and whether the Dreamers should be in the country they call home or deported to someplace else.

The Center for Biological Diversity, has already filed a lawsuit over the planned prototypes and wall extensions. Since former Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly implemented a waiver to avoid delays caused by required environmental reviews, the center has been working on an amendment to its case to challenge the waiver in court.
The group is concerned about several endangered species that would be affected by prototype and actual wall construction, including the checkerspot butterfly, coastal California gnatcatcher and San Diego fairy shrimp.

Firstly, the media has everyone confused – the U.S. is not ‘anti-immigrant’. Increasingly the distinction between legal and illegal is not being made, and it is a BIG distinction.
The majority of ‘dreamers’ are not the ones you see in interviews talking about their college degrees and contributions. A lot of them are taking up space in prisons for crimes that they did indeed commit. The concept of an ‘anchor baby’ is a reality whether we like it or not (women literally come days before they are due, knowing that we will not refuse anyone emergency hospital care), and regardless of what we choose to call it. Their parents were incredibly selfish people that racked up their first misdemeanor simply by entering the country illegally or overstaying a visa. Even our family reunification laws have been exploited as a loophole.
By and large most of them never had any intention of becoming American citizens – they came for the money, and a great many of them still intend to return to their countries of origin at some point after that has been achieved, the number of legitimate refugees among them is pretty dang small. In all honesty, the Bracero program was probably a lot more, well, honest.
People that want to make a contribution are always welcome, but there is a process, and the parents of these children flagrantly disregarded both of those or any similar notions. That’s pretty tough to respect as a working person who is also trying to survive.
Our business leaders (including Apple) and politicians are happy to exploit this situation. Programs like NAFTA and H1B were never about trade, they were about cheap labor. The issues we are currently dealing with can be traced directly back along the same timeline as these programs. I’m not speaking out of my arse either, I have lived most of my life in a border state and am old enough to have witnessed the before and after. Ditto with a sanctuary city.
It IS a tremendous burden in the form of education, healthcare, yes, prisons, welfare, housing, and a plethora of other things. We are not the only country on earth that has and enforces immigration law. Borders are about more than cultural identity, to think otherwise is sophomoric in the extreme. Most of us do not possess the vast wealth people like Cook do. People such as himself are pretty well insulated against any of the repercussions that arise.
To those that think somehow the States are former Mexican territory, think again. Mexico only controlled the border states for a couple of decades. Prior to that it was Spain, for centuries. Prior to that it was the Native American tribes – for tens of thousands of years. There are no Aztec or Mayan ruins or archeological sites in the Southwestern United States.
To the SJWs – the African people were brought here entirely against their will. There isn’t even a slight equivalency between that tragedy and people that knowingly broke laws in effect simply to cash in.
Lastly, in my opinion, Tim Cook is downright Kardashian in his arrogance. Here in the UK we have plenty of shameful historical episodes and even today, school history lessons tend to skip those events and concentrate on more glamorous topics ( or more cynically, favouring those events where we came out on top and got to write the history books ).

There was a time when UK voting was restricted solely to wealthy land owners and over the years, voting rights were been progressively extended, but women didn’t start to get the vote at all until about 100 years ago and even then is was initially on more stringent terms than men. It was a similar pattern in many other countries too. In France, women didn’t get to vote at all until 1945.
My wife is from East Germany, so obviously all of her forebears were fighting on the opposite side to all of mine, but that’s not an issue for either of us. There is nobody alive in either of our families who fought in the war. It’s history, it’s something that previous generations did. It’s not forgotten and it’s not celebrated either. We are acutely aware of the horrors of war and would never want that sort of thing to happen again. As a child, my wife was required to go on a school trip to visit a former concentration camp. German children were told all about what happened in the hope that nothing like it could ever happen again. British children are simply not told about the first concentration camps introduced by the British during the Boer War. earlier concentration camps were used by the Spanish in Cuba and before that by both sides in the American Civil Way and also against the Cherokee people before that.
Furthermore, my wife was brought up under Russian occupation, with the Stasi snooping on everybody. She knows from first hand experience how evil an over-reaching government agency can be like and how people working for those agencies can become intoxicated with the powers that they have acquired. She is very wary of any attempts by governments to snoop on the population and especially wary of covert operations which can increase in scope well beyond what was intended to be permitted.
The worrisome thing for me is that there are powerful people who not only refuse to learn from the mistakes of history, but are determined to follow virtually the same paths that led our ancestors towards unspeakable violence and evil.

Paul, perhaps you don’t understand how government works. There is nothing illegal about an executive policy. If you are cheering whenever Trump has a photo op for an executive order signing, then you cannot condemn a policy that essentially triaged immigrants so that limited law enforcement resources could focus on the very few dangerous ones. What DACA does is to review applicants who were minors when brought into the USA and, if they have a clean record, they are allowed to finish school and get work permits when sponsored by a company that needs the skills these hardworking kids offer. They don’t get preferential treatment and they don’t pose any threat to you.
I swear the alt right has brainwashed so many people into needless paranoia. Employers know better. The best employers, including Apple, judge people by their actions and character, not by what their ancestors did or the chunk of real estate on which they were born. If you need walls to feel safe, you are doing something wrong. The USA, which the pep rally cry implies was greater in the past, a time before border walls were erected, never needed walls in the past and has always before had ample opportunity for anyone to contribute. Now the Bannon/Trump bandwagon scapegoats immigrants and narrow minded people believe the shallow rhetoric.
