Apple CEO Tim Cook signs letter encouraging President Trump to preserve the DACA ‘Dreamers’ program

In a move organized by FWD.us, the immigration reform group led by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, business leaders from across the country have released an open letter encouraging President Trump to preserve the DACA “Dreamers” program and calling on Congress to pass the bipartisan DREAM Act or similar legislation.

In 2013, POLITICO obtained a prospectus for what would become FWD.us which stated that Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Silicon Valley investor Marc Andreessen were founding members of a group named “Human Capital” and detailed how the technology executives would use their companies to ‘control the avenues of distribution’ for a political message in support of their efforts.

Under a section called ‘our tactical assets,’ the prospectus lists three reasons why ‘people in tech’ can be organized into ‘one of the most powerful political forces.’

1: We control massive distribution channels, both as companies and individuals. We saw the tip of the iceberg with SOPA/PIPA.

2: “Our voice carries a lot of weight because we are broadly popular with Americans.

3. We have individuals with a lot of money. If deployed properly this can have huge influence in the current campaign finance environment.

The open letter, verbatim:

August 31, 2017
To: President Donald J. Trump
To: Speaker Paul Ryan; Leader Nancy Pelosi; Leader Mitch McConnell; and Leader Charles E. Schumer
As entrepreneurs and business leaders, we are concerned about new developments in immigration policy that threaten the future of young undocumented immigrants brought to America as children.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allows nearly 800,000 Dreamers the basic opportunity to work and study without the threat of deportation, is in jeopardy. All DACA recipients grew up in America, registered with our government, submitted to extensive background checks, and are diligently giving back to our communities and paying income taxes. More than 97 percent are in school or in the workforce, 5 percent started their own business, 65 percent have purchased a vehicle, and 16 percent have purchased their first home. At least 72 percent of the top 25 Fortune 500 companies count DACA recipients among their employees.

Unless we act now to preserve the DACA program, all 780,000 hardworking young people will lose their ability to work legally in this country, and every one of them will be at immediate risk of deportation. Our economy would lose $460.3 billion from the national GDP and $24.6 billion in Social Security and Medicare tax contributions.
Dreamers are vital to the future of our companies and our economy. With them, we grow and create jobs. They are part of why we will continue to have a global competitive advantage.

We call on President Trump to preserve the DACA program. We call on Congress to pass the bipartisan DREAM Act or legislation that provides these young people raised in our country the permanent solution they deserve.

Signed,

Tim Cook / CEO Apple, Jeff Bezos / CEO Amazon, Mark Zuckerberg / Founder & CEO Facebook, Sundar Pichai / CEO Google Inc., Satya Nadella / CEO Microsoft Corporation…

MacDailyNews Note: According to Reuters:

President Donald Trump is expected to rescind an Obama administration policy that protects from deportation nearly 800,000 immigrants who as children entered the country illegally, setting the stage for a fight with U.S. business leaders and lawmakers over tough immigration policy.

A senior administration official told Reuters on Thursday that the plan could be announced as early as Friday and that Trump would let the so-called Dreamers stay until their work permits expire. Trump, a Republican, had pledged on the election campaign trail to scrap all of Democratic former President Barack Obama’s executive orders on immigration.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters that Trump and his senior advisers were still reviewing the DACA program and that the president not made a final decision on how to proceed. Asked whether Trump still stood by a comment in February about treating Dreamers “with heart,” Sanders said: “Absolutely, the president stands by his statement.”

Ten Republican state attorneys general in June urged the Trump administration to rescind the DACA program, while noting that the government did not have to revoke permits that had already been issued. If the federal government did not withdraw DACA by Sept. 5, the attorneys general said they would file a legal challenge to the program in a Texas federal court. The effort was led by Texas and joined by state attorneys general in Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. Kayleigh Lovvorn, a spokeswoman for Texas attorney general, on Thursday said her office has no plans to push back the Sept. 5 date.

Immigrants who entered the country illegally as children have been able to qualify for DACA if they were under the age of 31 when the program began on June 15, 2012. They would have to have entered the United States before they turned 16, however, and to have lived continuously in the country since June 15, 2007.

    1. I suspect Tim Cook is too polite to suggest the same for yourself. But I’m not. Please do STFU and appreciate that there remains at least one company and one CEO that place humanity above game playing, aka financial gain. You might consider hanging out at a Goldman Sachs fanatic chatroom. I’m sure they don’t give a rat’s about humanity over there.

      1. Vacillating Weasel: Defender of Censorship, Enemy of The First Amendment….

“In an impassioned plea, Mr Cook, boss of the world’s largest company, says that the epidemic of false reports ‘is a big problem in a lot of the world’ and necessitates a crackdown by the authorities and technology firms.”
“‘It has to be ingrained in the schools, it has to be ingrained in the public,’ said Mr Cook.

        you pontificating phony.

        1. It so much fun to watch the BRAIN DEAD, ZOMBIE, LIBTARD, IDIOTS that lose their minds any time a true hard working, well educated, contributing member of society (Conservative, not a serial welfare taker or criminal illegal alien) makes a post on MDN or in the news in general. Liberalism is a serious, major, mental illness. Liberals want to flush everything and everybody right down the toilet with them. Bring us all down to 3rd world standards. Not going to happen losers. We are too busy working at our jobs, inventing new things, bring the standard of living up constantly, and spending quality time with our awesome traditional families to waste our time going back and forth with you clueless fools. You SJWs are delusional! Keep having your crybaby-hissyfits. It’s so fun to watch and laugh at.

          MAGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Yes, it’s quite dangerous to reply to baby bot as he will immediate decide that you’re in love with him, glom onto you and make fun of you if you show the least interest in not replying to him in the future. I think THAT is the definition of ‘obsession’.

Note how I craftily have not replied to him, but to you instead breeze. This will tick botty off to no end.

        1. Oh, beleive me I know what an obsessed and pathetic specimen of a deplorable nothing he is DC… MDN has lost my repect for its biased double standards and its embraceing/allowance of him and his biggoted shit talk and bitter frustration, so typical of the loser demographic he belongs to.

Of he took the plug out of his ass, he would probably flood his furniture, but at least he’d have a chance of mixing with the real world without the fecicious odor he omits.

          What a scum dwelller, hahahahahahan

        2. “fecicious” is not a word.
          “biggoted” is not a word.
          “embraceing” is not a word.
          “If” not “Of.”

          the typical illiterate marxist jackass.

PS: The Pantsuit Succubus will never be president.

        3. “MDN has lost my repect for its biased double standards and its embraceing/allowance of him and his biggoted shit talk and bitter frustration, so typical of the loser demographic he belongs to.”

Well, fine. That said, you did not lose my respect since you had none to begin with.

Please explain in detail the “loser demographic.” Would that be the demographic that controls Washington and most states? Would that be the demographic that lost control of power with the average American because of bad liberal policies the last eight years?

Your buddy DC can’t help you out this time, so please explain yourself …

  1. Pipeline Timmy needs to concentrate on getting Lazy Eddy Cue to get some work done, he is living off the gravy train for a while now. Tmmy also needs to concentrate on Apple, maybe even Chinese slave Laborers that builds his devices, and leave president Trump alone.

      1. The difference is Trump built and owns his business, not an employee like Cook who answers to the board and shareholders.

I blame the board for not reigning Tim in. They tried it once recently, forgot the details and hoping they put more teeth into the effort next time …

    1. Of course this IS related to Cook’s business. As the letter says, revoking DACA will affect a significant number of existing Apple employees.

These are not illegal immigrants, because they were too young to be criminally responsible for entering the country. They are simply noncitizens residing within the US, like American Indians before 1924. As such, they do not have the rights enjoyed by other residents, absent some exception such as DACA or the Dreamer Acts. DACA does not allow new entries into the US, since it only applies to those who have continuously lived in the United States since 2007.

Nobody is saying that we should have open borders. The question is where to draw the lines and whether the Dreamers should be in the country they call home or deported to someplace else.

        1. Perhaps not, but if company management failed to show normal human empathy for the plight of 250 employees threatened with deportation from their homes, friends, and possibly family to a country they barely know, other employees might assume that the company won’t stand up for them, either. That would not be good for morale or productivity.

Besides, empathy is a good thing in and of itself. The public display of self-centered behavior shows selfishness at best and sociopathy at worst.

        2. The proof is that Tim Cook said it was so in the letter that inspired this discussion. What is your proof he was lying? I know you don’t like him but he deserves some respect for adding a third of a TRILLION dollars to Apple’s market cap since becoming CEO. What have you done for our country other than vote for a New York liberal who inherited Daddy’s money and earned less income from it than it would have made in a stock index fund?

        3. Still no proof, got it.

Two liberals propagating the same meme.

Sorry to read you have a nitpicking problem with President Trump’s wealth accumulation and the most successful businessman ever to serve the people in the White House …

        4. The notion that there are Dreamers working for Apple is hardly a “meme,” liberal or otherwise. Why wouldn’t there be? They work for a living like everybody else. Some of them must be programmers or electronics salesmen.

What IS a meme is the discredited notion that Donald J. Trump is an unusually successful businessman.

According to Forbes, not exactly a liberal source, the family business, Elizabeth Trump & Son, was worth roughly $700 million (mostly in real estate) in 1971 when Donald Trump became its president, renamed it The Trump Organization, and moved the focus of activity from Queens to Manhattan. Although Trump disputes it, Forbes estimates the current worth as somewhere in the range from $3.5 to $5 billion.

That represents a compounded annual rate of return no better than 4.4%. Back in the 70’s, you could get almost that much interest on an individual checking account. Forbes figures that $700M invested in a balanced stock portfolio in 1971 would be worth in the ballpark of $20B today, at least four times what the company has earned.

Even if you use the President’s claimed value of $10B for The Trump Organization today, that represents annual growth of less than 6% over the last 46 years (a lot less if you adjust for inflation). Not a great performance for somebody who claims to be the most successful businessman ever.

    2. Snoop, might be better if Eddie was directed to work outside/down the road perhaps replacing some DACA workers. It was a delight & minor miracle ECue’s been removed from head of Siri! Maybe Siri’s head will be able to hear/respond like she has one and my frequent, “Siri, you’re an idiot,” can be retired.

    3. Waaaaahhhh….leave Brittany (trump) alone

Lololol. So it has come down to a parhetic, whining, crying YouTube video for accepting the lying, incompetent man child masquerading as pResident.

      Yep.

    1. Have you ever exceeded a speed limit? Have you ever done so with a child in the back seat?

If so, by your logic, YOU ARE AN ILLEGAL DRIVER. YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE SEPARATED FROM YOU AND YOU BOTH SHOULD BE PUNISHED. It doesn’t matter if you have a valid driver permit or have all your papers in order, your child was traveling over the speed limit without a permit. When you have repaid your debt to society and your child needlessly detained, only then should you be treated humanely. Ideally, you should have your skin pigmented bright green so that sheriff Arpaio and similar thugs can use racial profiling to terrorize otherwise law abiding citizens.

Honestly, doesn’t US law enforcement have better things to do than antagonize kids who through no fault of their own are caught in legal limbo? You can wave your stupid laws in everyone’s face as much as you want, simple common sense puts deportation of kids near the bottom of the list of things that taxpayers should be demanding from their government. There are more than enough schools and jobs to go around. If someone grows up in America, then fix the law to enable efficient — not free or unqualified — path to citizenship. If anyone needs deporting, it’s dead wood like rap artists, goebs, and botviniks.

      1. “If so, by your logic, YOU ARE AN ILLEGAL DRIVER. YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE SEPARATED FROM YOU AND YOU BOTH SHOULD BE PUNISHED.”

Fact check: Unless you are an illegal driver, then you are a legal driver that violated the motor vehicle code and was issued a citation. And no, your children should not be taken away because it is the drivers responsibly and the little tykes had no part in it. Ridiculous.

“There are more than enough schools and jobs to go around.”

The last eight years set a RECORD for Americans out of work. But that has changed under President Trump setting a new record of a different kind. He makes average Americans feel good, detractors excluded. Sorry you don’t like it or see it.

You sure know all about deadwood — no logic here …

  2. Contractor’s for President Trump’s border wall selected; construction begins in a couple of weeks, companies will have 30 days to complete their projects

Prototypes for President Donald Trump’s border wall may be completed by the end of October.

The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that it had selected four vendors to build prototypes of their proposed concrete walls in the San Diego area. Up to four selected proposals for alternative building materials will be announced later.

None of the finalists are San Diego-based. Caddell Construction Co. of Montgomery, Alabama, Fisher Sand & Gravel Co. of Tempe, Arizona, Texas Sterling Construction Co., of Houston and W. G. Yates & Sons Construction Company of Philadelphia, Mississippi were chosen. They were awarded between just under $400,000 and about $500,000 each.

The prototypes will be built near the Otay Mesa port of entry. They will be 30 feet long and up to 30 feet high.

The Center for Biological Diversity, has already filed a lawsuit over the planned prototypes and wall extensions. Since former Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly implemented a waiver to avoid delays caused by required environmental reviews, the center has been working on an amendment to its case to challenge the waiver in court.

The group is concerned about several endangered species that would be affected by prototype and actual wall construction, including the checkerspot butterfly, coastal California gnatcatcher and San Diego fairy shrimp.

The “San Diego fairy shrimp.” The Dem/Lib/Prog jokes write themselves.

    1. … Blowing yourself entirely OFF TOPIC again for the sake of PoliTard propaganda? As usual.

Please go hurl forth your PoliPuke at a political blog please. We’re talking about Mac Daily News here. See the title at the top of this page? It’s there! Look again…

        1. Yup. And good luck finding out who they are; unlike most other tech-centric sites, there’s no “who we are” type of page for the team behind MDN.

          Curious, that…

        2. Run by one guy “Steve Jack” and the right wing politics that proliferate MDN reflect his own views. In fact, he may very well be First 2014, Then 2016 (this may be my last post, he has a habit of banning posters he doesn’t agree with)

        3. Obvious you have no concrete proof.

That said, the owners of this site are entitled to their opinions, same as you. NO DIFFERENCE.

Not your political favorite, fine. Plenty of left wing tech sites out there you would fit right in.

I’ve read KingMel and others claiming they were done. Only to emerge again months later. Whatever.

Happy trails and vaya con dios …

        4. hey stupid, I’ve been temporarily banned myself…I don’t own MDN or have any influence on anything they do. Hell, I’m 1,200 miles from their offices.

        5. Your words: “So the site owners allow this crap?”

Please tell the class how you are NOT advocating censorship of speech you do not like.

          Waiting for your response …

        6. So goes, you don’t understand the concept of a question?

Even a political site would not allow the lies and curse words this site allows. Don’t let that stick up your ass interfere with your thinking processes.

          Damn autocorrect. Goeb.

I’ll try to make it simple for your simple mind. A question is NOT advocacy.

        7. No, not pretending.

I read multiple hits and vile insults from several posters hurled at Botty for simply stating his position (beliefs). He returns on the same level or opts for less vile expressing wit, facts, or jokes.

Sure sounds like a total free speech forum to me, Bob.

Regarding banning, what or whom exactly are you referring to? Seriously …

        8. Well I’m banned…you gonna call me a liar?
MDN does your arguments no favour by banning dissent and difference of opinion. Congrats, you have your echo chamber where you will learn nothing, achieve nothing and offer nothing…and you have the effrontery to spout about ‘free speech’
          #kakistocracy
          #denialdesert
          #ironyfail

        9. “Well I’m banned…you gonna call me a liar?”

Well, if you are banned — why I am reading your post, Gotcha? So yes, you indeed qualify.

“MDN does your arguments no favour by banning dissent and difference of opinion.”

Hmmm, I’m reading your liberal drivel right now. Now, who is the liar again?

“Congrats, you have your echo chamber where you will learn nothing, achieve nothing and offer nothing…”

Don’t put words in my mouth or thoughts in my head. Something the left excels at and practices everyday. I never advocated for one sided discussion and you’re dead WRONG. Both sides are fairly represented on MDN. Learning from Libtards, yeah that’s a good one.

Speaking of “echo chamber” in your follow up post to “Banned in San Diego” you stated I would not recognize “irony.” Oh I recognize STUPID irony all right, thank you very much.

Now, I guess that overture to BISD was not an echo chamber for the left? Right. Just love everytime the left accuses the other side of something they have just done themselves and routinely practice.

I believe degree psychologists call that pointing out your mistakes in other people. I believe normal folks call that hypocrisy. Something you and your ilk are incapable of understanding.

          Gotcha … 😆

        10. I wrote earlier, “Learning from Libtards, yeah that’s a good one.”

          Clarification:

Libtards would be defined today as the EXTREME INTOLERANT PC destructive leftists like Antifa and other groups.

The last true and salt of the earth good wizard generation of liberals are from the sixties and the seventies. Some are still around and certainly you can learn a thing or two.

But that movement has been hijacked and replaced by the present day snowflakes that destroy property, stifle free speech, assault and maim people whose views they disagree with.

Case in point: Berkely protests present day. The irony is the campus was the birthplace of free speech in the sixties.

How far you’ve come, baby …

P.S. Can anyone name the classic cigarette ad campaign?

        11. Look doofus…I’ll make it simple so even the logic challenged idiot that you are can get a clue..
If I post from my home IP address, I get moderated and my posts do not show. There is no way round it – MDN’s egregious favoritism prevents me from engaging in any discussion if I try from my home network and I have the proof in the form of an email from MDN…

          Re: [MacDailyNews] Contact
          Hello,

Posts held for moderation are approved when they are on-topic and not profane.

          Thanks,

So where am I lying when even if I post ‘Test’…I get the same “moderation” block to ANYTHING I attempt. What is ‘off-topic’ or ‘profane’ about the word ‘test’? It’s a ban pure and simple which specifically prevents me from exercising the ‘free speech’ you constantly harp on about.
What ‘profanity’ am I guilty of, that can be compared in any way with anything that emanates from the sewer that is botvinnik? I challenge you to find just one post of mine that outscores botvinnik in profanity…just one!
          Did I say egregious?
You are tone deaf if you cannot see the two-faced MDN policy for what it is…or being deliberately obtuse.
Why this should make you happy, I’m at a loss to explain. For all your ‘free speech’ taunts to us ‘libtards’, where is the satisfaction in knowing that MDN is just stroking your ego by giving ‘you’ a louder voice in an artificially stacked crap shoot? Presumably you post to get your ideas across…me too. Except you can and I cannot. Hence ‘echo chamber’.
You should be angry…really angry, because MDN is removing any credibility you may have by not allowing ‘free speech’. Your points are rendered irrelevant if opposing ideas can’t be posited. You are effectively yelling at a blank wall in a vacuum. Why oh why you defend MDN with “it’s their site so they can do what they want” when they are effectively neutering ‘your’ voice and credibility…is beyond me.
Oh…and insults issued from an echo chamber have no power whatsoever either.
WHY ARE YOU NOT ANGRY ABOUT THIS?..you are being manipulated!

          *sigh*
This post comes curtesy of my phone carrier network which thankfully MDN can’t block, same as the last one.
Call me a liar? Get a clue.

        12. Please provide my quote where I called you a liar. Testy one I’ll save you the trouble: it does not exist. Skepticism, certainly.

          “Look doofus…”

I was going to write a more thoughtful and detailed response but those two words just did me in.

But I will say I have received the same message and had many posts pulled later on after being posted …

  3. Every American citizen reading this is the descendant of an immigrant or is an immigrant. Even the First Peoples came here from Asia over the land bridge from Asia. So we are all migrants or the descendants of migrants, the only difference being when we arrived.

Immigrants are the secret sauce of America’s dynamism, our culture & our entrepreneurial spirit. Steve Wozniak is the son of immigrants and Steve Jobs biological faith ER came here from Syria., so without immigrants there would be no Apple in Cupertino. When one looks at the roots of Apple, the Macintosh and the Internet we see the fingerprints of migrants, resident aliens and their children. Names like Bertrand Serlet did not come from Toledo. Take away the people born elsewhere and our country is a very different place.

Who loves America more: the person born to citizenship or the person who chooses to cast their fate with our nation and become a citizen? This very day, non-citizens are serving in our Armed Forces, in harm’s way, serving America.

The children who came here nd have been raised here know no other home- many do not speak the tounges of the country of their birth. That are as American as any other, just lacking some paperwork. It would not only be unfair, it would be immoral to send them away.

Ours is a big country and many towns could use the energy and fresh blood of new residents and citizens. There is plenty of room and plenty of opportunity. We need more immigrants- not less.

Finally, to the citizens ranting about green cards. The Native Tribes did not ask the Pilgrims or the settlers of Jamestown for a green card or an entry visa.

    1. EVERY country is made up of immigrants.
(even the ancient civilizations are mostly not the same peoples anymore)

So, to your point, no nation on earth needs borders.
      Kumbaya much??

That said, I hope a path is made that is fair to all for this tragic and LAZY situation.

(I know of a Dreamer in Dallas area whose parent have been here almost 20 years and had all that time to immigrate legally but never did)

      1. Thanks for the info we/I already new…just given out in a “kumbaya” way. Shall we just call it “all for one–one for all?” Shall we move into the one-world governance structure now? Or, is there a reasonable, measured and wise way to proceed? Accepting on the basis of merit a bad thing? Is it possible to accept immigrants that would bring a material deterioration of our culture? Is it “bad” that one may be concerned about that? Is it prejudiced, wrong, pompous to want a country of excellence? Do you think Tim’s aim to keep this order in place is so he can hire people that can’t read/have no skills, so they can work in Cafe Mac? When the numbers increase, so must selection, or chaos/disorder will result.

      1. Did your ancestors have a Visa when they arrived? Maybe we should send you back.

All law is derived from the people. The governed grant the government it’s power- not the other way around.

I understand illegal very well. I also understand immoral and civil disobedience. The ACLU- of which I am a member- will take care of Trump’s Folly.

        1. The LAW gave my great great grandfather asylum, you moron. LEGALLY.

PS: The ACLU, like the SPLC, has become an infected, fetid victim of marxist ideology…Judicial Watch is the lone defender of the Constitution.

          Where do you stand?

        2. I have no doubt that King George thought TJ an “asshole” too.

“I Have Sworn Upon the Altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”

        3. The money belonged to Iran from their frozen accounts after the fall of the Shah. I guess you like stealing other nations money. Maybe Tex should implement a state income tax to help pay for their own recovery. Oh, BTW.. Implement zoning/planning rules this time to mitigate the next flooding.

        4. Real men don’t ban people. Worms ban people.

If you want to talk about the purpose of the ACLU fine. Otherwise, crawl back into the hole you seem to have crawled out of.

    2. Newcomers revitalize communities, including rural ones. Look at Postville, Iowa before the ICE raid 10 years ago. Immigrants revitalized the dying community with new payroll and a growing small business footprint. Detroit would be a different place if they embraced immigration. Scranton, Penn wants to attract immigrants to revitalize and replenish the population. Immigrants to Minneapolis revitalized neighborhoods and now the young and empty nesters have moved back there to the urban core.

      1. Please sinclap, no one is saying immigrants aren’t valued, or welcome. You must have had a cup of kumbaya, as well. The question is, should their be regulation? Should there be standards, or shall we just open the gates? Enough of the pap…think critically. Mr A-Audio, is it tribalistic to regulate people incoming?

        1. It’s been that way for decades, what’s changed? They fill in the employment gaps like in the urban core, because the snowflakes in the rural core are unwilling to relocate where the job opportunities are.

      2. Sorry for the long wind here, but I have just had enough.

Firstly, the media has everyone confused – the U.S. is not ‘anti-immigrant’. Increasingly the distinction between legal and illegal is not being made, and it is a BIG distinction.

The majority of ‘dreamers’ are not the ones you see in interviews talking about their college degrees and contributions. A lot of them are taking up space in prisons for crimes that they did indeed commit. The concept of an ‘anchor baby’ is a reality whether we like it or not (women literally come days before they are due, knowing that we will not refuse anyone emergency hospital care), and regardless of what we choose to call it. Their parents were incredibly selfish people that racked up their first misdemeanor simply by entering the country illegally or overstaying a visa. Even our family reunification laws have been exploited as a loophole.

By and large most of them never had any intention of becoming American citizens – they came for the money, and a great many of them still intend to return to their countries of origin at some point after that has been achieved, the number of legitimate refugees among them is pretty dang small. In all honesty, the Bracero program was probably a lot more, well, honest.

People that want to make a contribution are always welcome, but there is a process, and the parents of these children flagrantly disregarded both of those or any similar notions. That’s pretty tough to respect as a working person who is also trying to survive.

Our business leaders (including Apple) and politicians are happy to exploit this situation. Programs like NAFTA and H1B were never about trade, they were about cheap labor. The issues we are currently dealing with can be traced directly back along the same timeline as these programs. I’m not speaking out of my arse either, I have lived most of my life in a border state and am old enough to have witnessed the before and after. Ditto with a sanctuary city.

It IS a tremendous burden in the form of education, healthcare, yes, prisons, welfare, housing, and a plethora of other things. We are not the only country on earth that has and enforces immigration law. Borders are about more than cultural identity, to think otherwise is sophomoric in the extreme. Most of us do not possess the vast wealth people like Cook do. People such as himself are pretty well insulated against any of the repercussions that arise.

To those that think somehow the States are former Mexican territory, think again. Mexico only controlled the border states for a couple of decades. Prior to that it was Spain, for centuries. Prior to that it was the Native American tribes – for tens of thousands of years. There are no Aztec or Mayan ruins or archeological sites in the Southwestern United States.

To the SJWs – the African people were brought here entirely against their will. There isn’t even a slight equivalency between that tragedy and people that knowingly broke laws in effect simply to cash in.

Lastly, in my opinion, Tim Cook is downright Kardashian in his arrogance. Though for perhaps different reasons, post-Steve Jobs Apple belongs on the same Silicon Valley sh*t list as Google, Amazon, and Facebook, as far as I’m concerned. I’d say get him out of there, but to me, it would be a far worse disaster to have him in the public sector.

    3. Just when I was about to give up on this MDN story as yet another one filled with idiotic tribalism, there was finally one intelligent and reasoned comment.

I don’t live in the USA, but have been visited it and worked there since the early 70’s. I have many American friends and know what a fabulous place America can be, but I and my American friends have tremendous misgivings about the divisive attitudes which are currently being fomented, especially when coming from such a high level. History shows us that such actions never end well.

“We are far more united than the things that divide us” – From the first speech given by Jo Cox after she was elected to the UK parliament. Sadly she was murdered last June by an extremist who disagreed with her views, leaving a young family to be brought up without their beautiful mother.

      1. My people came to these United States from the UK well over a hundred years before the American Revolution. My Ancestors served in if not every- almost every war our nation has fought. Among my ancestors are Senators and Educators, US Attorneys and Farmers, Scientists and Engineers, Doctors and Ministers- probably some low lifes as well. Some were slaveholders (South Carolina) and bore arms against the United States in the Civil War…

I would say my heritage entitles me to speak as much as anyone as we have been here a long time, spilled our blood here, payed taxes and even served in elected and appointed positions of government.

The greatness of America is not the promise of a document, but the freedom exercised by it’s people. At the start, only white, male, debt-free landowners could vote. Over time, people group after people group has stepped forward and demanded their place at the table from women to our GLBTQ neighbors and friends more recently. They had to claim it as it was not given by government.

The US has an ugly history of theft, repression, racism and violence made beautiful by people who took our founder’s words and made them real. The people who made it happen are of every creed, race, ethnicity, color, and background. Those kids Trump wants to deport are as American as any of us.

        1. Here in the UK we have plenty of shameful historical episodes and even today, school history lessons tend to skip those events and concentrate on more glamorous topics ( or more cynically, favouring those events where we came out on top and got to write the history books ).

Britain was right at the centre of the slave trade and benefitted tremendously from it, but to their credit, some Brits were instrumental in abolishing it too. The slave trade was an important aspect which contributed to the prosperity of the city of Bristol, but these days Bristol neither celebrates nor forgets about the slave trade. There are plenty of plaques, building, museums, artefacts and records associated with Bristol and the slave trade and it’s handled sensitively without creating hostility.

There was a time when UK voting was restricted solely to wealthy land owners and over the years, voting rights were been progressively extended, but women didn’t start to get the vote at all until about 100 years ago and even then is was initially on more stringent terms than men. It was a similar pattern in many other countries too. In France, women didn’t get to vote at all until 1945.

My wife is from East Germany, so obviously all of her forebears were fighting on the opposite side to all of mine, but that’s not an issue for either of us. There is nobody alive in either of our families who fought in the war. It’s history, it’s something that previous generations did. It’s not forgotten and it’s not celebrated either. We are acutely aware of the horrors of war and would never want that sort of thing to happen again. As a child, my wife was required to go on a school trip to visit a former concentration camp. German children were told all about what happened in the hope that nothing like it could ever happen again. British children are simply not told about the first concentration camps introduced by the British during the Boer War. earlier concentration camps were used by the Spanish in Cuba and before that by both sides in the American Civil Way and also against the Cherokee people before that.

Furthermore, my wife was brought up under Russian occupation, with the Stasi snooping on everybody. She knows from first hand experience how evil an over-reaching government agency can be like and how people working for those agencies can become intoxicated with the powers that they have acquired. She is very wary of any attempts by governments to snoop on the population and especially wary of covert operations which can increase in scope well beyond what was intended to be permitted.

The worrisome thing for me is that there are powerful people who not only refuse to learn from the mistakes of history, but are determined to follow virtually the same paths that led our ancestors towards unspeakable violence and evil.

        2. a thoughtful and astute post…you are a lucky man to have a wife like yours.

          Once again:
          IV.
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

Those who advocate the tyranny of a one-world government or a North American Union, ignore the inestimable value to humanity that is the gift of The Bill Of Rights.

    4. Does the word LEGAL mean a darn thing to you? REALLY. Oh and get over this native BS, why don’t you pick on the Spanish, or Italians, or England, or France….Or China, Russia, get the message yet?

  4. All those states grinning from ear to ear at the Apple money and Apple factories, the LONG game is that they’re attempting to transplant and imbed liberal values WITH those jobs. When one of a state’s largest source of jobs decides they want to push for a specific change, it will be VERY hard for those lawmakers dependent on keeping those jobs in their districts to say no. Expect to see more job programs focused on red states from all across the tech sector. It’s all about the jobs and the economy, and these business leaders are hoping to make more happen in the next few years and it won’t require buying off the state houses.

Be careful of what you wish for, you may be FORCED to get it.

    1. Not likely. Even with tax breaks, Apple is paying to build and own their facilities. Consequently, they aren’t likely to just pack up and leave if they don’t get their way.

Apple will have an investment tying them to those places… unlike the vast majority of sports organizations. Which are actually (and often privately owned) corporations.

These corporations (disingenuously referred to as “teams”) repeatedly manage to get public officials to help them “convince” (dupe) sports fanatical citizens all over the U.S. into footing the bills for white elephant stadiums. Usually with financial projections/benefits about how much revenue the teams and stadiums will generate.

Many studies, and history, have shown those financial projections/benefits seldom reach projected levels.

Also, later on those sports teams will often (usually) threaten to leave if they don’t get their way when the time comes for them to renew contracts/leases over those stadiums. And since they don’t own the stadium, they often do leave as they have no financial anchor (investment).

    1. I saw a clip. Ryan saying the only thing coming from trumps mouth are lies.

Oh,and it appears his million dollar donation towards Harvey recovery won’t actually come from trump.

        1. Just like his other donations, either they don’t happen or what littered does donates is from a foundation. Trump offered 5 million for Obamas birth certificate. A pretend million for a disaster.

      1. better said than my mere humble defense of liberty:

“For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.”

Thomas Jefferson, Letter to William Roscoe, December 27, 1820

        1. Are you talking about the song Wendy by:

          The Beach Boys
          Primal scream
          Elton john
          Concrete blond
          Seal
          Bob the builder
          Attic lights
          Cake like
          God street wine
          Jonas brothers
          Prince and the revolution
          Arcade fire
          Kim wilde
          All time low
Young heart attacks —— Excuse me attack
          David Bowie

There are 11 more pages of examples. Any one of those?

        2. So you admit having an up close and personal, private relationship with mdn. Damn autocorrect tried a Freudian slip on me and make it relationship with men.

        3. The ol’ libtard fallback. Autocorrect didn’t even try to correct it. I guess it was in 2007’s talking points when that black guy ran for President.

        4. Can’t fix stupid so no matter what I say, you will still be the ignorant “gentleman” they say you are. I can’t use curse words. Wouldn’t want to get banned like the city of San Diego did. Or get my pot shop banned. Or fireworks. Or plastic bags. Or cup lids at petco park. Or glass bottles on the beach. Or smoking on the beach.

        5. Lots of thing banned in San Diego. That socialist, communist, facist, dictatorship dedicated to squashing right thinking Americans and making them have abortions an become gay atheist.

          True story.

        6. Let me refresh your memory since it seems to be failing or you became stupid.

          Barack Obama
          44th President
          January 20, 2009 to January 20, 2017

An administration noted for strong, calm leadership during a financial crises that could have been worse than the stock market crash of 1929. A hateful and spiteful Republican Party, put petty and unreasonable concerns above the good of the country and made it their stated goal and PARTY PLATFORM to make him fail. For the most part they was impotent in efforts to sabotage his administration although they were able to convince the weak minded and racist to support them.

President Obama was able to keep the pathetic red state assholes from losing everything, banks from being bankrupt and auto companies from bankruptcy.

Thanks to his calm and steady leadership, the stock market went from a low in the 8000’s to almost 20,000. His leadership saw the unemployment rate drop to less than 4% in spite of republican obstruction.

This obstruction was the party platform for over 8 years as they could not put aside their hate and racism for the good of the country.

During his administration it became common practice for racist to denigrate President Obama using the most vile slurs and language. This is from supposedly “good Christian Americans.

The hate for an Excellent President drove the RWNJ’s to elect a bigoted, incompetent, mean spirited, stupid, spiteful, sexual predator, racist, misogynistic, crooked businessman as the next president.

His major accomplishments so far are whining about how everyone doesn’t love him, trying to destroy pillars of democracy like the free press, having a hissy fit about his predecessor’s accomplishments and trying to undo the all because he has no ideas.

          Remember yet?

        7. Unless I missed it on this holiday weekend:

          Tim Cook 0.

Didn’t he just cash a bonus in the millions weeks ago?

Guessing helping regular salt of the earth folks in a red state does not agree with his leftist cause célèbres and won’t impress his friends at the San Francisco cocktail parties …

        8. We know who you are, asshole. Your name is Dean Clark and you are a pompous dickhead who gets his jollies by insulting others on the internet. Get a life.

  5. Thank you Tim Cook for supporting America and the American Dream and resisting the tide of intolerance and hate that has gripped America with the selection of the incompetent, failed and crooked businessman occupying the White House.

We Americans stand behind you and will never let this become ameriKKKa.

  6. Keep having your crybaby-hissfits. It’s so fun to watch and laugh at.

    MAGA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Right on!

You would think modern liberalism would be the best hybrid in history given technology and instant communication and media reach.

Instead, it has denigrated into the most hateful, childish, spiteful and ignorant variant the world has ever seen .,,

  7. DACA was illegal, not passed by Congress and signed into law. It was an executive order delivered by fiat. If it hurts little Timmy’s feelings, too bad, we are a nation of laws not men. It seems Apple wants to protect everyone but white males over 50. Apple has gotten too PC. If Timmy wants to change the world, let him run for something. I’m sure with his cash he could buy a Congressional Seat somewhere in California.

    1. Exactly right.

To your excellent point regarding white males over 50. They are indeed the MOST discriminated group in the U.S. today. The hypocrisy is the so called open minded left are the ones most responsible for this recent manifestation of discrimination.

Case in point: Personally know a talented tenured journalism professor at one of the most prestigious universities in New York state (his hometown).

Four years ago when classes concluded in May he was called in the office and terminated.

With a perfect work record, naturally he asked the female department head why and here is a direct quote, “you’re the wrong color.”

Rather than going through the legal hassle suing for blatant illegal discrimination, and feeding your family at the same time while looking for employment, he immediately went to work job hunting.

Less than two months later he landed a position as department head (promotion) in a well known college in Mississippi.

Imagine that. The South is tolerant and the Northeast is intolerant. Another parallel construction example: the left has become closed minded and the right has become open minded.

Agree or disagree. One thing is certain — we live in interesting times … 🇺🇸🌞🍔🍗🍸😎

    2. Exactly right.

To your point regarding white males over 50. They are indeed the MOST discriminated group in the U.S. today. The hypocrisy is the so called open minded left are participating in this most irresponsible manifestation of discrimination.

Case in point: Personally know a talented tenured journalism professor at one of the most prestigious universities in New York state (his hometown).

With a perfect work record, naturally he asked the female department head why and here is a direct quote, “you’re the wrong color.”

Rather than going through the legal hassle of filing a lawsuit for blatant illegal discrimination, and feeding your family at the same time while looking for employment, he immediately shrugged it off and went to work job hunting.

From the classic Labor Day movie arguably of all time (won two Oscars). Millie Owens: “When I graduate from college I’m going to New York, and write novels that’ll shock people right out of their senses. I’m never gonna fall in love. Not me! I’m not gonna live in some jerkwater town and marry some ornery guy and raise some grimy kids.”

    3. Paul, perhaps you don’t understand how government works. There is nothing illegal about an executive policy. If you are cheering whenever Trump has a photo op for an executive order signing, then you cannot condemn a policy that essentially triaged immigrants so that limited law enforcement resources could focus on the very few dangerous ones. What DACA does is to review applicants who were minors when brought into the USA and, if they have a clean record, they are allowed to finish school and get work permits when sponsored by a company that needs the skills these hardworking kids offer. They don’t get preferential treatment and they don’t pose any threat to you.

I swear the alt right has brainwashed so many people into needless paranoia. Employers know better. The best employers, including Apple, judge people by their actions and character, not by what their ancestors did or the chunk of real estate on which they were born. If you need walls to feel safe, you are doing something wrong. The USA, which the pep rally cry implies was greater in the past, a time before border walls were erected, never needed walls in the past and has always before had ample opportunity for anyone to contribute. Now the Bannon/Trump bandwagon scapegoats immigrants and narrow minded people believe the shallow rhetoric.

Simple math: in a nation of 370 million people, do you think offering ~ 75,000 kids a better life is going to ruin your future? Why?

      1. I guess you did not hear President Obama admitting on live TV at the time it was “illegal.”

Of course, the rule of law meant nothing to him to the self righteous know it all.

And the media did not say anything about it because they allowed him to do anything he wanted, legal or illegal, it didn’t matter.

Fast forward to President Trump and he is getting 24/7 crap from the media for doing away with an illegal law! That would be called a double standard.

        Animal farm …
