Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac now available; VMware Fusion coming in October

“Parallels and VMware both announced new versions of their virtualization products for Macs today, with performance improvements and optimizations for the upcoming releases of macOS and Windows,” Jon Brodkin reports for Ars Technica.

“Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac will be available today,” Brodkin reports. “Although VMware Fusion 10 for Mac and Workstation 14 for Windows and Linux are being announced today, the VMware upgrades will be available for sale sometime in October.”

“Parallels stuck to its yearly paid upgrade schedule a year ago, while VMware released free updates to Fusion and Workstation. This year, both companies are asking customers to pay for upgrades,” Brodkin reports. “Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion are both adding support for the new MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar, though Parallels’ Touch Bar implementation is more extensive.”

    1. I’m on Parallels “pro yearly renewal” plan. For $50 a year, they update and maintain parallels with support. Parallels does an excellent job. If you are a mac user and need to run SERIOUS BUSINESS PROGRAMS ( or even ONE business program) on your Mac, this is WELL WORTH it. Presumably, this year extra specially it is important- I’m SURE that with the switch to APFS the effort was great by parallels.

Now, if you either 1) have never written a line of code in your life and don’t realize how difficult it is OR 2) you just want to run a windows game or two on your mac, you can b*tch about the 50 bucks. As for me, thank you Parallels team, you provide a really good piece of software that does its job really well.

PS: the upgrade to 13 was fast and seamless. it handles thumb drives a little different but no biggie.

    2. I have v11 and saw no point in v12. However, I’ll be upgrading to v13, which adds nice features as well as macOS 13 High Sierra compatibility.

For those who don’t have Parallels already, it is commonly included on bundle deals that will save you paying full price.

  1. No, Parallels is not what you want. Far too many people on that team were educated at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Let me be clear that I’m unaware of any “bad behavior” on their part but that doesn’t mean they should be implicitly trusted. Go with VMware.

    1. … Except VMWare has been tossed around between companies like a football, making its future uncertain IMHO. As with China, I have no love for sending my money to a Criminal Nation. But I deliberately make an exception when a company is inventive and innovative, which is the case with Parallels. Supporting creativity is important worldwide.

  2. Until Microsoft catches up MS Office to High Sierra (who knows how long that will be), for those of us forced to use it, running macOS Sierra in Parallels and using MS Office for Mac is an alternative to running Windows in Parallels and running the Windows version of Office.

Any thoughts on which version of MS Office (Mac or Windows) you find better or better suited to your needs (if you HAVE to use MS Office)?

I’d prefer not to use Office at all, but it is required.

  3. Surely fusion 10 is the best solution as it has more enhanced capabilities and functionalities in comparison to the competitors like parallels desktop 13, eg. vmware fusion 10 now has virtual security features such as credential guard which other rival doesn’t and make fusion stand out of the crowd. The closest competitor parallels desktop for mac is also good but still, check this comparison table to see side by side features comparison https://www.couponcodes.store/2017/11/vmware-fusion-10-pro-vs-parallels-desktop-13-mac-comparison-review/
