EDN: Production of Apple’s flagship OLED ‘iPhone 8’ delayed to November-December

“Production of the OLED-version next-generation iPhone will be delayed to November-December, shipping only in small volumes initially, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report,” Steve Shen reports for DigiTimes.

“While there were previous reports indicating that volume production for new iPhone devices has commenced, yield rates at the two main ODMs, Foxconn Electronics and Pegatron, have not yet reached levels that warrant mass production, the report said,” Shen reports. “”

“Foxconn has secured about 95% of orders for the OLED model,” Shen reports. “Volume production of the 4.7- and 5.5-inch [LCD iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus] models at Foxconn and Pegatron are now expected to enter full swing in August, 1-2 months later than the normal mass production schedules of new iPhone devices in previous years, said the report.”

MacDailyNews Take: If true (another big IF) we wonder if Apple will launch without anything near enough supply (à la Apple Watch and AirPods) or delay the availability date? Either way, the OLED iPhone will be a tough get – good luck on pre-order night or you may be waiting months to get yours!

  1. Samsung galaxies have used oled technology for there displays since the s5. Gee, that’s going back to 2014.
    Apple is pushing off privation times because of difficulties mass producing such space age technology.
    Tim Cook was quoted saying back in 2014 “OLED technology as inferior to LCD tech” and what is trying to do. USE INFERIOR TECHNOLOGY. HMMMMM

    1. First, Samsung doesn’t ship as many OLED phones as Apple ships iPhones. Samsung sells more phones, but most of them are not the flagship hones.

      Secondly, perhaps OLED tech has changed over the years, hmm? Could that happen, you think?

      1. Of course, it has changed like everything else.

        The point is that Samsung had this for a long time all the while Apple fanboys called them copy-cats. And they even develop and manufacture it themselves. True innovation.

        1. Apple develops and delivers the entire concept of the modern smartphone which Google, Samsung, and everyone else copied.

          Samsung jumps on OLED displays early in a weak attempt to differentiate its products from the iPhone, and the early displays are markedly inferior to the iPhone LCDs. After years, OLEDs are maturing and Apple now identifies it is time to explore the technological transition.

          Glenn, it doesn’t matter if people are so-called “Apple fanboys” or not. The copycat label for Samsung was and is accurate. And Samsung is not the only company that has developed OLED displays.

  2. It wouldn’t be OLED that’s the holdback. It’s the decision to either launch small quantities or disabled iTouch, at start, or delay the launch until significant numbers are reached.

    Apple is pushing the envelope here and no other company has to produce numbers like Apple. The yeilds are way more than anyone else could hope to sell, yet Apple can’t settle for that drop.

    They need a full bucket. This is the drawback for being the top dog and having ravenous customers. Can you wait for the goods, or are you like a fox?

    1. What delay? If the iPhone 8 comes out in November 2017, that is 10 months ahead of its expected release date. I have heard no rumors of a delay to the release of the 7s models in September 2017 as one would expect. If the 8 comes out before September 2018, great!

  3. IMO.. one possiblity for All these rumors could be to confuse the market …and generate dialogue…
    And maybe keep the 7 sales flowing. (Some will not want to wait given this news )

    November December release will be nothing short of a disaster . If True!?

  4. This just in:
    Unannounced product is late;
    unannounced features are missing;
    unannounced hardware is inferior to that hardware not announced;
    unannounced name is not acceptable to unexpected customers;
    owners of the last unannounced version are extremely happy with their unannounced device.
    What non-news did I miss?

  5. Two reasons Apple hasn’t switched to OLED earlier : 1) Apple needs such quantities, no one manufacturer can supply them. It is orders of magnitude more than the S8. 2) OLED’s aren’t perfect, they have issues that are still being resolved. In 2014-15, they were far from perfect, good LEDs had more accurate color. Just because Samsung was an early adopter, doesn’t mean they were superior in all cases. LEDs evolved as well.
