“Just hours into using my new 27-inch iMac with 32GB of memory, the system felt sluggish,” Glenn Fleishman writes for Macworld.
“I checked memory usage via the top -u command in Terminal, which showed all 32GB was full,” Fleishman writes. “Exclamation point, I said aloud, and launched Activity Monitor to dig in more easily than at the command line.”
“Sure enough, all memory was in use, and the culprit was something I’d never seen before: com.apple.MediaLibraryService,” Fleishman writes. “For some (like me), this service goes out of control and consumes all available memory… Fortunately, you can at least halt the runaway train…”

MacDailyNews Take: Activity Monitor is also nice for seeing how much memory your various Safari tabs are consuming. It’s especially nice for those of us with 20+ tabs open at all times.
This is really a major-serious problem for Apple that apparently has been going on for years.
I am a recent convert to MacOS and I must say that this is Apple’s dirty little secret. No one tells you about the memory problems until after you’ve bought the damn machine. I’ve come up with some solutions like Dr. Cleaner Elite, but really, that ain’t a real solution, its a bandaid.
I’m sort of shocked that Apple has not addressed this. Really lame, even for 8GB of RAM. I will never go light again…
Major RAM hog is Safari. That’s been its M.O. since its inception. Too much eye-candy, not enough functionality.
Those stupid Google Chrome Helpers aren’t any better. They chew up gigs of RAM and don’t seem to want to die.

memory management has always been a pain on the mac.. they’ve never got it right. yet.
used to write applescripts for artists to manually flush out the memory that was being held back from use.. you know.. just in case that app you closed 2 hours ago needs to launch again.
You mean like this site hogging almost HALF A GIG by itself!!

RamDoubler!! Whoa, my ancient memory came back. Back in the days when Mac was memory starving little machine, RamDoubler was a God send. But after Apple have gradually polished up its memory management scheme, I thought RamDoubler was gone. Then, I Googled now, and yes, it’s still available, even with familiar box design. I never thought virtual memory stuff was useful again, but I have to check it out. In the meantime, occasional restarting…..
