“Apple CEO Tim Cook spent less than two minutes talking about Apple TV during the company’s WWDC keynote this week, but that was enough time for two revelations: First, Apple’s TV guide app now pulls in movies and shows from more than 50 streaming video sources,” Jared Newman writes for TechHive. “Second, Amazon Prime will become one of those sources when Amazon launches an Apple TV app later this year.”
“The TV app worked with 37 content sources at launch, and the list has grown by about 15 apps since,” Newman writes. “All of which makes the absence of Netflix ever more conspicuous. Although Netflix offers an Apple TV app, it doesn’t support Apple’s TV app.”
Newman writes, “Without the most popular subscription streaming service, Apple’s ambitious plan for a unified TV guide doesn’t feel complete.”

But, we are happy we’ll be getting Amazon’s The Grand Tour on our Apple TVs (well, when there are 4K Apple TVs that can properly play it).

With regard to MDN’s reference to “Tim Cook’s laughably hyperbolic 2016 claim”, well, Tim just can’t spin it like Jobs could. No RDF for Tim.
I am less than impressed with the Apple TV’s Guide App.
With content in my connected computer’s iTunes Library, the cell phone company’s app directed me to Services I do not have or to rent the content from Apple. Very nice, Mr Cue.
Until AppleTV starts supporting my ITunes Library and offers more flexibility with viewing options, actors and content information the way Plex does, I’m done with iTunes. Currently iTunes is only good for music. Thank you Eddy “clueless” Cue.
Not supporting the iTunes Library continues to show Apple’s continued disregard for it’s user’s needs and wants. And besides that, it’s just plain stupid.
RIGHT!, it is so annoying I have to switch to my “computer” app on the appleTV just to watch the movies I imported to iTunes.
I ditched iTunes for Movies and TV shows, and installed Infuse Pro 5 which supports DTS and DTS-HD-MA. It streams movies and TV shows flawlessly from my Drobo.
Given the generally craptastic quality of Netflix’s original content by and large, I hope it leaves them reaching higher. Granted, thus far Apple’s ‘original’ programming’ is also something you might find swimming in a petrie dish, but hopefully there is room there for course correction. Gods of your choice know they have the money.
Anybody have a clue when new AppleTV hardware will hit the shelves?…

Since ‘Amazon Subscriptions’ is part of Amazon Video, I wonder how many Apple TV users will forego the separate channel App for subscribing to that same channel from within Amazon Video which will consolidate search within a single App. Something Apple TV itself is trying to do.
