Alphabet to push Google Assistant to iPhone as standalone app via Apple’s App Store

“Google’s artificial intelligence software is already inside Android phones, smart speakers and watches,” Mark Gurman and Mark Bergen report for Bloomberg. “At the Google I/O conference this week, the Alphabet Inc. unit plans to bring it to at least three more places: iPhones, coffee tables and kitchens.”

“The Mountain View, California-based company is set to announce a version of its AI-powered assistant for Apple Inc.’s iPhone as soon as Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the matter,” Gurman and Bergen report. “It is set to land on the iPhone as a free, standalone app that can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store, according to the person. It would arrive first in the U.S., but Google is working on adding support for other countries in the future.”

“Google is also integrating its Assistant into GE home appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, washers and dryers,” Gurman and Bergen report. “Users will be able to ask the Assistant how many cleaning pods are left in the dishwasher, or tell it to pre-heat the oven to 350F, or ask if the laundry is clean.”

MacDailyNews Take: Not integrated into iOS, Google’s privacy-trampling Siri knockoff will never be widely adopted on iPhone as a standalone app.

“Hey, Google, can you stop tracking me for the NSA?”

“Sorry, next to ad tracking, that’s my primary purpose.”

And, not that we’d be buying GE appliances anyway, but along with Samsung and LG, there’s another appliance brand to avoid.

    1. I’d buy an LG appliance before a Samsung. I already made that mistake with my last washing machine. Live and learn. I avoided Samsung for my new TV this year. Very happy with my Sony.

  1. Like Microsoft, Google seems to lack the vision or drive to take a credible physical product to the market. Like Microsoft, they seem to have mesmerized themselved into believing that pushing an application to competing handsets is the equivalent of physical market presence or mindshare. Note that no other phone maker has any compelling market brand identity or consistent marketing campaign. This is the true manifestation of the fragmentation of Android.
We will see, but this looks like another Era of Apple, where competitors with limited vision do their best to copy or at best, stain Apple mobile products with their third-best applications.
