“New data from comScore shows that 5% of all U.S. households with a WiFi connection now use Apple TV,” Ben Lovejoy reports for 9to5Mac. “Apple’s streaming TV box is the fourth most popular platform after Roku, Amazon’s fireTV and Google’s Chromecast. comScore collected the data in December of last year.”
“The company notes that despite the growing use of video on demand services,” Lovejoy reports, “live TV still dominates, accounting for 84% of all viewing against 14.9% time-shifted TV and just 1.1% video on demand.”
“In streaming services, Netflix is the unsurprising market leader at just under 40% penetration, followed by YouTube at around 27% and Amazon Video at a surprisingly high 17%,” Lovejoy reports. “Hulu remains below 10%.”

MacDailyNews Take: Amazon’s success does not surprise us as the company smartly signed Mssrs. Clarkson, Hammond, and May (The Grand Tour which smashed Amazon’s streaming record late last year). That could have been Apple instead, had Apple had executives with the vision and ability to get the deal done.
Apple blew this by being shortsighted and cheap.
Of course, “The Grand Tour” streams in 4K, so Apple’s inexplicably handicapped Apple TV can’t even handle it anyway. Like we said: Shortsighted and cheap.
Now that Apple’s hired Amazon’s Fire TV head to run their Apple TV business, we hope to see things to finally move and improve on the Apple TV front.

Yet another reason why Cook must go (along with poor Mac support, beta-testing AppleWatch V1 as a product, canceling products like WiFi router and monitors; SLOW iPad updates, horrendous iOS (if truly wants it to replace a Mac then it NEEDS a REAL FILE SYSTEM), and MANY many others….
My first Apple product was in 1979 (Apple II), and I have been all Apple All the time. It disgusts me to see what Tim is doing to this beloved company 😞
I have had all of the various AppleTV generations, I have a FireTV stick, and two Roku’s – a stick and a new Roku 3. I got the FireTV stick to get Prime streaming. I got the to Roku’s for free for signing up with various services. Spectrum TV gives you a Roku 3 for free.
However, I always use the AppleTV whenever possible. I swear it has the best picture, and the UI is way more friendly to me. I now have PlayStation Vue on it and that really works well. Way better than the Spectrum app on the Roku.
Never tried an Amazon stick.
Roku 3 is an old model. Newer models are even better, and the picture quality by any measure is vastly superior to an Apple TV. Not even close. 4K on almost all the current Rokus, in addtion to user friendly discrete audio out for your hi fi. Apple TV soldiers on with 1080 resolution and HDMI is your only port — but you pay a ~$50 premium for the Apple symbol and the pathetic remote.
95% of people seem to prefer the alternatives to AppleTV. ATV price alone is completely uncompetitive with the rest of the market.
That remote DOES suck. So tiny. Every time I can’t find it I curse Cook and Ive for their misguided focus on making EVERYTHING as thin and tiny as possible. A remote control, that lives in your living room, should not be sliver-thin and apt to be lost. Plus it isn’t comfortable in your hand. GONG!
You’re comparing a Roku stick to an Apple TV set-top box? One might expect the set top box to be more capable at 5 times the price. Sorry, but Apple isn’t even tempting me to reach for my wallet at all.
Face it: Apple goes to market with a relatively pricey one-size-fits-all product. It may have worked 15 years ago when that one product was technically light years ahead of the competition. But now Apple is a laggard in almost all its home-based systems including Apple TV, Mac, and Mac accessories. It’s almost as though Apple wants to become the next microsoft.

For $130, the Roku Ultra blows the doors off the $150 Apple TV. If you don’t want all the bells and whistles, then you can select from 4 less capable cost effective units. The reviews are in clear agreement what the winner is in this matchup:

Looked at the Apple TV but purchased an Amazon Fire TV (box) not the stick.
Great device – with one gripe – needs better parental controls.
I don’t like programs appearing on the main screen that don’t fit my profile. I wrote Jeff Bezos an email asking Amazon to fix this ASAP. Based on the response received I believe Amazon is about to fix this issue.
Nevertheless, the issue should not have arisen in the first place.
