TSMC to begin volume production of Apple’s A11 chips in April

“Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will begin volume production of Apple’s A11 chips in April,” Steve Shen reports for DigiTimes.

TSMC “will prepare a capacity for production of 50 million units of the chip before July, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News report,” Shen reports. “The A11 chips, which will power the upcoming iPhone series slated for launch in September 2017, will be built on a 10 nm FinFET process and packed with a wafer-level integrated fan-out (InFO) packaging technology, said the report.”

Shen reports, “TSMC is expected to maintain a capacity for rolling out 100 million A11chips before the end of 2017.”

  1. Interesting. One would assume that Apple will put a variant of the A10 in the new iPad Pros. If those don’t materialize until WWDC, then that would mean that the A11 will debut in the new iPhone roughly 3 months later. Apple has been making significant gains every year with their A series chips. Are they going to put an A10X (or whatever they will call it) in an iPad Pro and then go into their September event touting the new features and power of the A11?

If it isn’t an iPhone, it is isn’t an iPhone… and Apple doesn’t care.

I will keep repeating that line until they prove me wrong.
